Lao She was one of the greatest Chinese writers of the 20th century. He was born in Beijing and later became known as “the People’s Artist” because he wrote many plays, novels, and short stories about the lives of ordinary people. His own life experiences, like teaching in primary schools and even teaching Chinese in London for five years, helped him understand different cultures and people deeply.
One of his most famous works is the play “Teahouse,” which he wrote in 1957. This play has three acts and tells the story of Wang Lifa, the owner of a tea house in Beijing, and his customers. Through their daily lives and conversations, the play shows the big changes in Chinese society over fifty years, from the late 1800s to the mid-1900s. It helps us understand how people lived and how their lives changed during this important period of Chinese history.
Today, Lao She’s spirit continues to live on in Beijing. There is a special place called “Lao She Tea house” where people can enjoy traditional Chinese tea and delicious local food. Visitors can also watch exciting Beijing Opera, listen to traditional music, or see magic shows. This tea house welcomes everyone from all over the world, sharing the rich culture and history that Lao She so wonderfully showed in his works. It reminds us of the power of storytelling to connect people and preserve culture.
