B Sophie had always admired her grandmother's garden.Every summer, the small backyard burst with colors-roses,tomatoes,peppers,and herbs growing in neat rows.To Sophie,it seemed like magic. But she never imagined herself doing the same.Gardening looked like hard, dirty work, and she preferred spending her free time indoors with books and music. That changed when her grandmother injured her knee one spring and asked Sophie to help with the planting."Just for a few weeks,"she promised.Sophie agreed, though she doubted if she would enjoy it. The first day was awkward.Sophie dug holes too deep, watered plants too much, and mistook young weeds for vegetable seedlings().But her grandmother never lost patience. She guided Sophie gently, her wrinkled hands showing the girl how to press seeds into the soil with the right touch. “Plants don't need perfection,.”she said.“They need attention and time.” Gradually,Sophie found herself drawn into the garden's slow rhythm. She learned to notice the subtle changes-a new bud()opening,the way tomato leaves curled when thirsty. The work was physical and sometimes tiring, but it cleared her mind in a way that books and music never quite had. There was something deeply satisfying about caring for a living thing from seed to harvest.By midsummer,Sophie was harvesting vegetables for family dinners. She felt quite proud as her parents praised the salads made from her lettuce and tomatoes.More importantly, she discovered a side of herself she hadn't known existed:patient, attentive, and capable of making things grow. 高二英语第3页(共8页) The garden taught Sophie that meaningful things take time and effort. That lesson followed her beyond the backyard. She found herself applying the same steady patience to her schoolwork and other challenges. What began as a simple favor had grown into something far more valuable-a new understanding of herself. 24.Why did Sophie start helping in the garden? C Trees that talk back might sound like something fresh out of a dreamlike trip, but a high-tech initiative aimed at bridging the divide between youth culture and nature has turned fantasy into reality. Specifically,London-based agency Droga5 came up with the campaign for the creative activity,Agency for Nature, giving voice to trees in London,Dublin and Austin,Texas. To achieve this "talking"function, bioelectrical signals from each tree were transformed into speech through an AI large language model. It was fed insights about the trees'lifespans and histories, alongside data from biosensors that record metrics()such as wind speed, temperature and soil moisture().Additionally,the AI acted as the "brain"of the trees, shaping their unique personalities and enabling real-time conversations with more than 100 people-with sometimes touching results..For example,“Your care warms me,”a50-year-old oak(橡树)told Austin mayor Steve Adler, who asked how he might improve its life."More stable temperatures and consistent moisture would help.Thank you for asking, the tree replied. When discussing the purpose of the campaign,Evan Greally from Droga5 explained,"My hope was to make people care again,to bring out some care for something bigger than ourselves. Looking to the future, plans are in progress, but under wraps for now,to give voice to more trees. In the meantime, the team said the AI application could one day be used by farmers to chat with their crops,or to predict wildfires by talking to forests.Commenting on the tool's potential,Greally's colleague Chip McCoy added,"There's an element of endless possibility to it.We have this tool, and it's in the hands of everybody how we use it for the better. 28.How does the AI system give trees“voices”? The study illustrates a phenomenon familiar to many academics.Picking someone up and moving them to a more productive place will make them more productive. The new study collected data from about 300,000 U.S.-based scientists who published between 1945 and 2023.When a researcher moved from a less productive institution to one with higher average productivity, they became more productive as well, according to a "wandering scholar"analysis. The team notes that it could be something about resources, facilities and graduate students that led to productivity gains.A previous study supports that: Faculty (at top U.S.universities who work in fields where cooperation and co-authorship are normal were more productive because they led larger lab groups, researchers reported in a 2022 paper. "It's this labor that increases faculty productivity,"says Aaron Clauset,a computer scientist and senior author on the 2022 study. The study also supports a decades-long policy discussion about how to distribute government grant money, showing the benefits of favoring the top institutions. Some argue against further enriching highly productive institutions."Those institutions are in a position to make more productive faculty because they've received abundant research support over decades.Distributing resources to them disproportionately(不成比例地)would reflect the historical inequities that have created differences,” says Kirk Dombrowski from a nonprofit that promotes science in poorly funded states. The National Science Foundation(NSF)has long-running programs that reserve a part of their budget for projects in states having the least funding through traditional funding tracks. It's vital that government investments are geographically dispersed,as additional funding could help locally produced researchers and result in work that solves regional problems. 32.What does the new study find? A.Researchers often move for higher pay. B.Career success is defined by publications. C.Scientists'productivity relies on institutions. D.Most grants flow to well-known universities. 33.What can contribute to academic productivity according to the 2022 study? A.High salaries and job security. B.Strict publication requirements. C.Frequent international conferences D.Large lab groups and cooperation 34.What's the significance of the work of NSF? A.It strengthens international cooperation. B.It supports poorly funded states'research. C.It helps locally distinguished institutions D.It reduces the workload of local institutes. 35.What does the underlined word "dispersed"in the last paragraph mean? A.Widespread. B.Diverse. C.Restricted. D.Practical. 高二英语第5页(共8页) 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Looking for life purpose? The answer isn't grand deeds but small daily actions building social connections and a sense of being valued.36.Author Jennifer Wallace explains the human need to feel valued is fundamental, driving our behavior after meeting basic needs of food and shelter. This sense of mattering is closely linked to better mental health. 37 Wallace found people feel valued in tiny moments:a saved seat,a colleague's check-in or a neighbor's warm soup.Small kindnesses like walking an elderly neighbor's dog or praising a colleague's efforts work. These acts are contagious(有感染力的)一making others worthy brings you a sense of value in return, creating a connection cycle.
