Can you imagine a world 1._________ books, newspapers, or magazines? All of these things depend on one invention—papermaking. It, more than any other invention, was responsible for the rapid spread of information that shaped 2._________(we) modern world.
In ancient China, many different 3._________(material) were used to write on, such as animal bones, bronze ware, stones, wood, bamboo, and even silk. In the Western Han Dynasty, there was also a very early form of paper made from jute—a fibre that comes from plants. However, all of these materials were either difficult to use and store, 4.________very expensive.
As the head officer of the palace workshop for the emperor in the Eastern Han Dynasty, Cai Lun became interested in trying 5.__________(solve) the problem. Different methods for creating something to write on were tried, but none were ideal. In his time, some kinds of bark—the outer part of trees—were used to make clothes. From past experiences, Cai Lun got the idea that bark, certain plants, and old clothes could be used to make a special material 6._________(suit) to write on.
In the first step of Cai Lun’s experiment, all the ingredients 7._________(mix) and boiled in water. Then, this material was beaten, cut up, and mixed with water again. Next, the liquid was poured over a bamboo screen, leaving just the fibre. Finally, this fibre was dried and pressed to form paper. To everyone’s surprise, this paper was soft, light, easy to make and use, and most importantly, cheap. In 105 CE, Cai Lun showed his creation to the emperor. 8._______ emperor was very pleased and praised Cai Lun for his great work.
Later on, the papermaking technique not only speeded up the development of Chinese culture, but also changed civilizations around the world. It 9.________(one)spread to China’s neighbouring countries and finally reached Europe through Arab countries in the 12th century. When the use of paper and printing came together in later centuries, it led to a rapid increase in the number of books. This 10.________(result) in a new birth of knowledge, creating the world we have today.

Have you ever wished your smartwatch battery lasted longer? Or that your fitness tracker could bend and stretch with your body?
Traditional rigid batteries are like annoying roadblocks. They’re too big, can’t change shape, and limit what cool gadgets we can create.
But what if I told you scientists made a battery that’s as squishy as toothpaste? That’s right—the "toothpaste battery" is here to change everything!
Scientists at Linköping University in Sweden had an amazing idea. They turned battery parts into a liquid, so it can be 3D printed into any shape. This flexible battery works even when stretched to twice its size and can be charged over 500 times.
Imagine clothes that power themselves or health patches that stick right to your skin. These "toothpaste batteries" could make those sci-fi ideas real, especially for tiny devices in the Internet of Things.
Think about all the new possibilities! We might see robots that move like animals or watches that wrap around our wrists like bracelets. As more devices get smarter, these flexible batteries will help designers create things we’ve only dreamed of. Who knows—maybe one day you’ll design the next big invention powered by a squishy battery!
1.What does the "toothpaste battery" look like?
A. It looks like a smartwatch. B. It is as squishy as toothpaste.

The Classical Gardens of Suzhou, which are also called Suzhou Gardens, are a group of beautiful gardens in the city of Suzhou in Jiangsu Province of China. The first classical garden was created during the Spring and Autumn Period in the 6th century BC. More gardens were built in the following centuries and most of them were private gardens of scholars (学者) and officials of that time. During the Ming and Qing dynasties (朝代),the construction (建设) of the gardens came to its prime time because of the prosperity (繁荣) of Suzhou in that period. About ten years ago, I went on a trip to Luxor to see the Valley of the Kings, one of the most important tourist sites(景点)in Egypt. I stayed in the town on one side of the Nile River; the Valley of the Kings is on the other side. People usually take a guided tour to the site, but I wanted to go alone.
First, the good things. Adawy, a very nice man near my hotel, lent a donkey(驴)to me. He also gave me directions to the site. I rode slowly to the river and I felt really good in the morning air. I often stopped to take photos—the view was beautiful.
The old walls and tall mountains looked wonderful. I rode past quiet fields and stone buildings. The clean air made me feel great. Everything felt new and exciting. I knew I was visiting a special place all by myself. This trip gave me a happy feeling I would always remember.
I had some problems, though. I made two mistakes. First, it was a very hot day and I only brought one small bottle of water with me—I drank it up quickly in the morning, and I was thirsty all day. The second problem was the sun because I didn’t have a hat. I got terrible sunburn, and felt really hot and tired. After a few hours, I reached the site and took lots of photos. The site was astounding and made me feel great pleasure.
In the end, I enjoyed the experience. True, I didn’t feel very well, but now I have some beautiful photos and memories. I’d love to do it again, but not on a donkey!
