M: Hello. Good to be here.
W: Paul, why exactly did you decide to go into acting?
M: Well… It wasn’t my family background — my mom’s an office manager and my dad’s an engineer. They’re both artistic, actually — much more artistic than me when it comes to painting and drawing — they love the arts, but not the performing arts.
W: I heard you went to a dance school when you were eighteen?
M: Yes, I did. Some people see it as a waste of time and money, but I don’t think so. I spent three years with people of the same age, so I got a feel for how they behave. Thus I can act the roles better.
W: You’re in a popular TV play. Would you like to stay in it for years, like some of the other actors?
M: Well, I should because it’s a great show. But I’d like to play lots of very different roles in the future.

【答案】17. A 18. A 19. C 20. C
【解析】
【原文】M: Well, I have read a new research on physical fitness — how even little activities can make you fitter. So, if you move your feet a lot or move around in your chair, you’ll be in better shape. The research… let me see where it was. Oh, yes, it was at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota. Anyway, they found that all kinds of small everyday activities like standing up to stretch or getting off the sofa to change the TV channel could make a difference between being thin and being overweight. But if you have a remote control, it keeps you from moving. They also found that overweight people spent at least two hours more each day just sitting still. And, guess what, the extra activities of thinner people might make a difference of something like 10 to 30 pounds in weight per year. The lead researcher for the project says you don’t necessarily have to go out and run ten miles. Just any little movement or activity can contribute to physical fitness.

Cambridge Lectures on Art & Intelligence
A public lecture series exploring how human intelligence evolves alongside artificial intelligence (AI), from education to industry, innovation, and the future economy.
David Hockney’s work has shaped modern understanding of perception, attention, and ways of seeing for more than six decades, insisting on these as active forms of intelligence. The Cambridge Lectures on Art & Intelligence take place alongside the continued public presence of his work, including major exhibitions at institutions such as the Serpentine Galleries.
David Hockney’s practice has long emphasized the active role of the viewers, the experience of time, and the intelligence of looking. These questions remain central as technologies increasingly influence how the world is seen and understood. The lecture series extends this inquiry into a wider conversation about human judgement, interpretation, confidence and inventive thinking in contemporary culture. At a moment when AI is transforming how images, information, and decisions are produced, the series asks what forms of human insight, judgement, and interpretive agency remain essential, and how they are developed, recognized, and sustained within education, culture, and industry.

Many kids love playing sports, but being a professional athlete can be difficult. What will happen when a boy who loves basketball realizes he may not be tall enough to make it on the court? For Amar Shah, that realization did not end his dream — it helped him find a new one.
Shah, a journalist and author of the graphic novel Wish I Was a Baller, turned his love for a famous basketball team into a writing career that began in eighth grade. “I knew I couldn’t make it as a basketball player, because I didn’t have that needed height,” Shah shared with a laugh. “So, I found my closest way to the court — through journalism.”
That choice led to some incredible opportunities. While still in high school, Shah earned press permission and began interviewing basketball legends. Thinking back on his first interview with a famous basketball player, Shah said, “Here I am, not even five feet tall, and he’s seven feet. He talked to me for 30 minutes, like we were friends.” Kids can use reading and writing to stay close to the sport they love. There are numerous ways to work in sports without competing.
In Wish I Was a Baller, Shah shared his professional journey, and he hoped that it would encourage young people to keep going. “Whatever your dreams are, continue striving for them, because you never know where they’ll take you,” he said.
Many sports fans enjoy reading books about the game they love. From player autobiographies to fictional tournaments, there is something for everyone. Teenage Scholastic Kid Reporter Asher Freije is an athlete and sports fan who enjoys reading. He shared his advice for athletes who want to read more. “Find books on the sport you love. If you love that sport, then you most likely will love that book, because it’s something you already enjoy,” he said. He also explained how reading could inspire new interests, sharing that a book about wrestling once inspired his interest in that sport.
24. What was Shah’s original dream?
A. To become a sports journalist. B. To write stories about basketball.
C. To join a famous journalism team. D. To be a professional basketball player.
25. What is the tone of Wish I Was a Baller?
A. Romantic. B. Inspirational. C. Ironic. D. Pessimistic.
26. What message did Asher Freije convey in the last paragraph?
A. Wrestling is a popular teenage sport. B. Reading sports books benefits players.
C. Athletes should read only sports books. D. Being good at a sport can win more fans.
27. What can be concluded from the text?
A. Practice makes perfect. B. Many hands make light work.
C. All roads lead to Rome. D. Actions speak louder than words.
【答案】24. D 25. B 26. B 27. C

C
For the first time, we see a species that has been in decline due to extreme weather recover through rapid evolution, so does this mean species that are increasingly being hit by dramatically rising temperatures and other challenging conditions can adapt as the planet gets warmer? It is clear that evolution has saved countless species from climate change in the past.
But the key challenge is time. Until now, the fastest climate change occurred around 56 million years ago, when temperatures rose 5 ℃ to 8 ℃ over a period of roughly 20,000 years. Now temperatures could rise by more than 4 ℃ by the end of the century. Can evolution really make a difference over such a short time? The answer is definitely yes, at least for organisms (有机体) with short generations. Take monkey flowers, water-loving plants, for example. When hit hard by the drought, three local populations died out. But many survivors appeared to have evolved drought tolerance in just three years.
This is what biologists call evolutionary rescue. It has been demonstrated in several labs, but Daniel Anstett at Cornell University says this is the first time it has been shown to have happened in the wild. “It’s very hard to show because you need three things: A population is declining due to a threat; it has adapted genetically in response; those genetic changes enable it to recover,” he says.
There are lots of possible examples of evolutionary rescue. But biologists haven’t been able to tick all three boxes in these cases. “The third link — to be able to show that the recovery is explained by rapid evolution — has never been done before at the scale of an entire range of the species,” says Anstett.
What’s more, as global warming continues and populations decline, they lose genetic diversity — the fuel for evolution. And long-lived species with long generation times have very little capacity for rapid evolution to begin with. Nevertheless, Anstett sees his findings as good news. “A lot of these current predictions about species decline don’t take evolution into account,” he says. “This is a story of hope.”
28. How does the author lead in the topic of the text?
A. By citing documents. B. By raising an issue.
C. By launching an appeal. D. By drawing comparisons.
29. Why is the discovery about monkey flowers meaningful?
A. It shows field research is quite difficult. B. It shows they have limited survival ability.
C. It shows field exploration is very important. D. It shows evolutionary rescue can occur in nature.
30. What do the underlined words “tick all three boxes” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Complete three difficult tasks. B. Mark three boxes on the paper.
C. Meet all the three requirements. D. Compare three different findings.
31. What is the best title for the text?
A. Extreme Weather Leading to Species Decline. B. Creative Ways to Protect Endangered Species.
C. Does Temperature Matter in Species Evolution? D. Will Evolution Save Species from Climate Change?
【答案】28. B 29. D 30. C 31. D

Taking care of your teeth is good for your oral health. But did you know that it could be good for your overall health too? One procedure — root canal treatment (根管治疗) — could even reduce the inflammation (炎症) linked to heart disease.
In a new study by King’s College London published in the Journal of Translational Medicine, researchers tracked the changes in blood chemistry after participants underwent treatment for root canal infections. It is reported that root canal treatment is one of the most common dental procedures and is used to treat infection or damage to a tooth’s soft inner part. More than a third of adults in England have had it, and the study found a connection between this dental procedure and overall health.
The researchers followed 65 patients from Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust in London for two years after they had the procedure. The participants were checked before the procedure and four times after; each time, the patients’ blood was analyzed to see how they process fat, sugar, and additional substances. Through this analysis, the team found that the patients’ health improved in several ways related to heart health and less inflammation after the treatment.
“Our findings show that root canal treatment doesn’t just improve oral health — it may also help reduce the risk of serious health conditions like diabetes and heart disease. It is a powerful reminder that oral health is deeply connected to overall health,” Dr Sadia Niazi, a senior clinical lecturer in dentistry at King’s College London commented. The findings matter for global health because many dental infections are left untreated, with 3.7 billion people worldwide suffering from oral disease and insufficient dental care.
Researchers say that oral health should be part of a patient’s general healthcare. People must understand that the mouth is the main gateway to general health, so looking after their oral health, doing regular checkups with their dentists, and getting diseases treated early are the best course of action.
32. What does the study mainly find about root canal treatment?
A. Its relationship with heart health. B. Its function in curing all oral diseases.
C. Its wide popularity among British adults. D. Its great benefit to a tooth’s soft inner part.
33. What does paragraph 3 mainly introduce about the study?
A. Its process and results. B. Its background and features.
C. Its application and prospects. D. Its considerations and limitations.
34. What is Dr Sadia Niazi’s attitude to the findings?
A. Critical. B. Indifferent. C. Appreciative. D. Curious.
35. What is the main purpose of the last paragraph?
A. To give a warning. B. To give examples.
C. To make suggestions. D. To make a complaint.
【答案】32. A 33. A 34. C 35. C

How to Break Free from Guilt
I have missed a friend’s milestone birthday, haven’t returned my dad’s phone call, and won’t be able to make it to my kid’s marching band event. ____36____ This complex, painful emotion can motivate you to make positive changes, such as reducing your carbon footprint or repairing a relationship.
However, guilt can go too far or be unhealthy, and even when it serves a purpose, it can cause unnecessary anxiety and anger. Sometimes, when you do something that makes you feel guilty, you tend to blame it on your character weaknesses. This tendency to overgeneralize consists of inaccurate perspectives that can have a negative effect on your mental health. ____37____ For example, acknowledging that you forgot a friend’s birthday is vastly different from telling yourself that you are a bad friend.
____38____ Guilt is a sticky emotion that can become a habit, but you can challenge that feeling by quieting your inner critic. Start by asking if the expectations you set for yourself are realistic or fair. You can tell yourself repeatedly that it’s fine and normal that others will be disappointed. You can also try talking to yourself as if you were comforting a friend, reframing the situation through a more tolerant perspective. Instead of saying “I messed it up”, you might say, “____39____”
The key is not to beat yourself up, but to think of a way to move forward rather than living in the past. ____40____ We are having a wonderful breakfast, and beforehand, I will run and get her a bunch of flowers from the supermarket.
A. I couldn’t do it better next time.
B. This didn’t go as I intended, but I tried my best.
C. Another powerful strategy is to practice self-forgiveness.
D. Tomorrow, I’m meeting the friend whose birthday I forgot.
E. If you’re anything like me, guilt can be an everyday experience.
F. Nevertheless, you’d better choose to forget anything insignificant,
G. Therefore, it is essential to focus on your actions rather than your character.

第二节(满分25分)
67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I was born without my right hand. For years, I had to rely on a rough rubber prosthetic hand (假手) which my parents had bought for me due to our tight family budget. Unfortunately, it was hard and inflexible, making even simple grasping movements impossible. I failed to write with a pencil or play ball games, which cast a heavy shadow over my plain childhood.
Gradually, I was trapped in endless self-doubt. I deliberately stayed away from crowded places, remained silent in class and barely interacted with classmates. Locked in my own small world, I sank into deep loneliness, convinced that I would never get rid of such an awkward life.
It was Scott, my STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics) teacher, who detected my sorrow behind my silence. After school, I often volunteered in his workshop where he would create something to help those in need. During my volunteer time, he witnessed my inconvenience in doing simple tasks and understood my inner pain clearly. Because of his kindness and responsibility, he was later rated as a model teacher. Amazingly, he had hidden a secret project for nearly a year, merely hoping to pull me out of the dark days.
Scott shared the plan only with me. Patting me gently on the shoulder, he said, “I just want to make a suitable hand for you, one that truly fits you.” He once voiced his anxiety, fearing that he might fail to produce a qualified prosthetic hand. Unwilling to raise my vain hope, he conducted all research secretly. It was his consideration and professionalism that quietly warmed my frozen heart.
To customize a better prosthetic hand for me, he used all his spare time to do research. He consulted professional engineers worldwide and refined every component repeatedly. One day, he smiled and whispered to me, “Be patient. Every effort will finally pay off.” Sure enough, with the school’s support, he eventually created a purely mechanical hand for me. Without any electronic devices, it was lightweight, tough, and comfortable to wear.

Then Scott founded a charity to help more disabled people.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】参考范文:
The school organized a handover ceremony. Nervous but expectant, I stood on the stage with my parents, my heart pounding wildly in my chest. With gentle movements, Scott fastened the customized prosthetic hand on my arm and adjusted the straps patiently. To my overwhelming surprise, its fingers moved flexibly at my will. When I picked up a pencil smoothly, tears streamed down my face. Filled with indescribable joy and gratitude, I wore a bright smile, and warm applause echoed through the quiet school hall.
Then Scott founded a charity to help more disabled people. Unexpectedly, the simple mechanical hand, born out of his limited technical conditions, turned out cheap, durable, and easy to maintain for ordinary disabled people. Inspired by his noble deed, I frequently accompanied him to participate in voluntary activities, and I made up my mind to devote myself to relevant charitable careers in the future. His selfless kindness touched me so deeply that I resolved to pass on this warm love. His compassion lit up my life and guided me to move forward bravely.

Without any electronic devices, it was lightweight, tough, and comfortable to wear.
