In Wuhan’s Jianghan District, the sound of guqin spreads out of Xishan Qin Studio. Inside, 54-year-old Wu Youquan is cutting wood carefully while his son Wu Ming tunes (调音) a new guqin. For over 20 years, Wu has turned from a wood seller into a master guqin maker—crafting the 3,000-year-old Chinese stringed instrument by hand.
Wu’s story began in 2001. Back then, he sold wood for guqin makers. One day, an old carpenter (木匠) told him, “Old wood from pulled-down houses produces better sound.” This made him travel to Yunnan, Guizhou and Sichuan. He walked through villages, asking for old wood pieces. A farmer gave him a 50-year-old cedar wood piece for free. At first, Wu did this just to make money as few people made guqins then.
His love for guqin grew when he wanted to make one for his wife, a guqin lover. He learned a good guqin could cost more than a house! But it needs over 100 steps: choosing wood (which must dry naturally for years), shaping it, and painting it with natural paint. His first try took three years but broke—he used too much natural paint. Worse, the lacquer (漆) made him allergic. “My whole body had red marks. I even wore gloves to sleep,” he said. But he kept going, learning from local farmers to protect himself.
Luck came in 2010. The Chinese National Academy of Arts asked him to provide wood for old guqin repairs. There, expert Sun Qingtang noticed his hard work and became his teacher. For years, Wu took trains to Beijing to fix mistakes. He burned 10 failed guqins before succeeding in making a good one. “No love, no way to keep going,” he said.
Now, Wu’s family runs the studio. His wife plays guqin and his son teaches students. Once, Wu Ming had difficulty with a tune until he watched waterfalls for ideas. “Every guqin has a heart,” Wu said, touching a nice guqin. “My job is to pass this treasure on.”
31. How did Wu Youquan start his journey related to guqin?
A. By making a guqin for his wife. B. By following an old carpenter’s advice.
C. By learning from expert Sun Qingtang. D. By opening a guqin studio with his family.
32. What did Wu Youquan do when making the first guqin?
①Spent three years on the first guqin. ②Learned to protect himself from farmers.
③Burned the failed guqin at once. ④Used too much natural paint.
⑤Got red marks because of the paint.
A. ①②③ B. ②③④ C. ③④⑤ D. ①④⑤
33. What does the underlined word “allergic” probably mean in Paragraph 3?
A. 害怕的 B. 擅长的 C. 过敏的 D. 厌烦的
34. What can we infer from the passage?
A. Guqin making is easy and takes little time.
B. Wu started making guqins for fun at first.
C. No one helped Wu with his guqin making.
D. Wu’s family all take part in guqin culture.
35. Which of the following is the best title for the passage?
A. A Family’s Love for Guqin Culture B. The Story of a Guqin Studio in Wuhan
C. From Wood Seller to Guqin Master D. Making Guqin: Hard but Valuable

Bats are fascinating animals that play an important role in our ecosystem. There are over 1,400 species of bats around the world. Most bats are nocturnal, meaning that they are active at night. They sleep in holes, trees, or even buildings during the day. Some bats like the tiny bumblebee bats are as small as a thumb, while others such as the flying foxes have a wingspan of up to 1.5 meters.
One amazing fact about bats is how they find their way. They use a skill called echolocation (回声定位). Bats make loud sounds and listen to the echoes. This helps them find food like insects, fruits and even small animals, and avoid obstacles in the dark. For example, a bat can easily fly through a dark cave without hitting the walls even if it’s full of twists and turns. Scientists have found that bats’ echolocation is so exact that they can find an insect as small as a mosquito in mid-air.
★ Many bats eat harmful insects that damage crops. A single bat can eat thousands of insects in one night, which saves farmers a lot of trouble. Some bats even help spread seeds and pollinate flowers just like bees. Without bats, many plants would have difficulty in growing. What’s more, bat guano (粪便) is a great natural fertilizer for farms. In some places, farmers collect bat guano to make their soil richer.
However, bats are often misunderstood. Many people think bats are scary, but most bats are harmless. In fact, they are quite gentle. Some bats are even cute with big eyes and soft fur. They hardly hurt humans unless they feel in danger.
Though scientists have learned a lot about bats, there’s still much to discover. How do bats’ echolocation skills work so well? What other roles do they play in nature? It’s time for you to start exploring the wonderful world of bats!
36. Where do most bats not sleep during the day according to the passage?
A. B. C. D.
37. What does the example of a bat flying through a dark cave show?
A. Bats are active at night. B. Echolocation helps bats find the way.
C. Bats have poor eyesight. D. Caves are safe for bats.
38. Which sentence can be put in the blank “ ★ “ in Paragraph 3?
A. Bats feed on harmful insects. B. Bats are bad for crops.
C. Bats damage flower plants. D. Bats are helpful to farmers.
39. What can we infer from the passage?
A. All bats look scary. B. Bats only eat insects.
C. Bats are important to nature. D. Scientists know everything about bats.
40. What is the writing purpose of the last paragraph?
A. To ask people to protect bats. B. To encourage people to study bats.
C. To list the problems of bats. D. To introduce new bat species.

第三段划线词后的解释“My whole body had red marks. I even wore gloves to sleep”,说明身体对漆产生了不良反应,因此“allergic”意为“过敏的”,符合身体出现红斑的语境。

A. Bats feed on harmful insects. B. Bats are bad for crops.

A. All bats look scary. B. Bats only eat insects.
C. Bats are important to nature. D. Scientists know everything about bats.

【答案】例文:
Dear Tony,
I’m happy to hear that you love Chinese festivals! To learn Chinese well, you should listen to Chinese songs and watch movies. Speaking with friends is also helpful. You can also read simple Chinese stories. My favorite festival is the Spring Festival because family members get together and eat delicious dumplings. It means love and hope for the future. During the festival, we wear new clothes and visit relatives. Children can get lucky money. It is full of joy and warmth. I hope you can come to China and experience it someday.
I am willing to be your guide. Let’s enjoy Chinese culture together!
Yours,
Li Ming
