In our newest exhibit,Science for Everyone,we’re thrilled to offer interactive experiences that are as engaging as enlightening. Let’s take a closer look and discover how they rethink their perceptions of STEM.
BECCA
PEIXOTTO
archaeologist
I loved visiting my grandparents’old farmhouse in Vermont and finding things the previous owners had left behind in the early 1800s. I came to archaeology in a pretty roundabout way. I started college studying engineering. When I took my first archaeology course,it was like a light bulb turned on! It’s exciting to find an artifact buried for hundreds of years and think about the life of the person who held it last.
JESSICA
FAGERSTROM
medical
physicist
I work in a field that applies concepts in physics and engineering to questions in medicine. I help treat patients who have cancer, using radiation. My job is to make sure that the radiation is delivered safely and effectively. I love my job because I get to use fascinating science and cutting-edge technology,to help sick people feel better.
GRACIE
ERMI

scientist
I write code to aid wildlife conservation. When I first graduated,I wanted to find a job that would make a difference! At the time,I wouldn’t have called myself as a conservationist, but I definitely would now. I work on technology that can look at a picture of a whale and automatically perform a health checkup without disturbing the animal at all.

These days,I have been gathering contributions for Class Notes from my classmates at the Brearley School. Seven contributions have come in. They are long or short, emotional or matter-of-fact,and now my job will be to cut and select, rephrase and quote, and count words from each contributor—our entire collection will have to add up to no more than six hundred and fifty words.
The tough part is trying to give more or less equal space to each of these life accounts, since some of us tend to relate incidents in great detail while others are tight-lipped. If nine of us altogether, including me,contribute notes, then each note is allowed a little over seventy words. If another contribution comes in at the last minute,we all go down to about sixty-five. Do I cut out the trip to Costa Rica,or the visit to the nephew in New Jersey? The recent grandchild, broken leg,or Scrabble(拼字游戏) competition?
Why did I decide I would not mind being a class-notes agent? I suppose I pursue any piece of writing for two main reasons. First,I like the challenge of trying a new form. In this case,my task is to rearrange the writings of a range of personalities to create one fairly smooth whole. The second reason is always emotional. Here, one source of my emotion was the years-long experience of the school itself. I was also touched that my classmates suggested me for the job, their sensible reason being:“You’re a writer.”
As a 65-year-old lady,I feel tired sometimes, but I’ve never stopped valuing every moment in this job. For me,my classmates are still full of youthful energy, passion,or disgust or tearful hurt. I’m not sure I’m naturally gifted at turning all these colorful details into a brief and entertaining account. That’s how I do it—quote their own words as often as I can.
4.What does the author need to do with the contributions?
A.Edit and adjust them.
B.Collect and grade them.
C.Ensure the variety of them.
D.Add personal comments to them.
5.How does the author explain the difficulty of the job?
A.By citing quotes. B.By listing examples.
C.By making comparisons. D.By giving definitions.
6.What can we infer about the author from paragraph 3?
A.She prioritizes new forms.
B.She prefers emotional writing.
C.She is hesitant about the role.
D.She is acknowledged by her classmates.
7.What does the author think of the job?
A.It’s stressful. B.It’s worthwhile.
C.It’s straightforward. D.It’s troublesome.

When thinking of TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) doctors, one might picture an elderly man with a long beard sitting in front of a medicine chest. However,a young and talented physician in the latest medical-romance drama, challenges that traditional image.Played by a 27-year-old actor, the physician is a professional TCM specialist with a gentle personality, but outside of work,he enjoys hobbies like skateboarding and malatang,a type of hotpot, reshaping common views of TCM doctors.
The drama follows the female lead,a hotel manager suffering from frequent headaches and trouble sleeping. In her search for a cure, she meets the physician, and their relationship deepens through medical consultations. To play a genuine TCM practitioner, the actor studied Chinese medicine with practising physicians, learning traditional diagnostic (诊断的) and treatment methods. This process helped him gain a deeper appreciation for TCM’s integrated philosophy, which emphasizes the interconnectedness of the body, mind, and environment, viewing health as a balance between these elements.
The drama creatively integrates TCM knowledge by naming each episode after a type of Chinese herbal medicine, connecting TCM’s healing methods to the storyline. For example,in one episode, the physician performs “wet cupping” to treat a breathing emergency, showcasing TCM’s role in critical care.
The drama particularly appeals to young viewers. With the growing integration of TCM and Western medicine,as well as expanding international exchanges,TCM practitioners and students now have more diverse career opportunities. For instance, acupuncture (针灸) is now covered in health insurance plans in many countries. The actor believes that passion is the driving force behind a successful career—just like his character, the physician, who remains committed to his path in TCM despite numerous challenges, including initial opposition from his father. The actor hopes to introduce TCM to a global audience, especially young generations, through the drama’s release on international platforms.
8.What do we know about the physician?
A.He challenges the principles of TCM.
B.He is an actor starring in a TV drama.
C.He presents a distinct image of a TCM doctor.
D.He has the same hobbies as other TCM doctors.
9.Why did the actor learn TCM techniques?
A.To prepare for the role.
B.To treat his own illnesses.
C.To become a practising physician.
D.To appreciate TCM’s philosophy.
10.What is the author’s purpose in mentioning acupuncture?
A.To explain the diverse changes in future careers.
B.To demonstrate TCM’s international recognition.
C.To show the drama’s popularity among young viewers.
D.To emphasize TCM’s advantages over Western medicine.
11.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.A Traditional Approach to TCM
B.A New Vision for TCM’s Future
C.Exploring the Ancient Roots of TCM
D.Redefining TCM for a Global Audience

If you’ve been feeling a little pale and dried out, imagine how your houseplants feel in winter. While the sun streams in through windows all summer long, during winter it’s all shadows and drafts. 1 . Here are the four ways you can make them happier.
Adjust the light. It’s not only that the sunlight is lower in the sky—it’s also available for fewer hours in the day. To guarantee your plants are getting enough light, you can try moving them closer to southern-facing windows. 2 . Plant lights can ensure that your plant gets enough light where it needs it.
Slow down the watering. I know that watering feels like the way in which we give plants love, but it is also the way in which we drown them. Too much water results in root rot. Ideally you want to water only so much that the soil is damp, but not wet, when you stick your finger in a few inches down. 3 .
Dust your leaves. If you love your plants, you’ll tend to their leaves by dusting them. Plants absorb nutrients from the air through their leaves. 4 . In this case, spray them with water and wipe them with a cloth. If you’re seeing leaf issues, such as all the leaves dropping, that can be a sign of over-or underwatering.
5 . Your plants enjoy the same conditions as you do. They don’t enjoy hot or cold air,as either will dry them out. Each houseplant has specific needs, whether full sun, partial sun, partial shade or full shade, and you should keep their needs in mind when providing sun exposure through the day.
A.Avoid unfavorable factors
B.Create a welcoming environment
C.And their “tiny holes” can get blocked by dust
D.It should have time to dry out in between watering
E.As a result, your plants may be looking a little dull
F.But ultimately you may need some man-made assistance
G.You should be careful about watering the root,as it requires more water

E.As a result, your plants may be looking a little dull
F.But ultimately you may need some man-made assistance
G.You should be careful about watering the root,as it requires more water
E选项“As a result,your plants may be looking a little dull”(所以,你的植物可能看起来有点黯淡)中的“As a result”承接上文对冬季环境的描述,说明这样的环境会导致植物状态不好,引出下文让植物状态更好的方法,符合语境。]
F选项“But ultimately you may need some man-made assistance”(但最终你可能需要一些人工辅助)中的But表示转折,承接上文,“man-made assistance”指代下文的“Plant lights”,符合语境。]
D选项“It should have time to dry out in between watering”(在两次浇水之间它应该有时间变干)进一步说明了浇水的注意事项,符合“减少浇水”这一主题。]
C选项“And their ‘tiny holes’ can get blocked by dust”(并且它们的“小孔”可能会被灰尘堵塞)解释了为什么要清洁叶片,与上文内容紧密相关,也与下文“In this case”相呼应,符合该段主题。]
