College Rankings Are Something, but Not Everything
I am always confused when reading statements like"Princeton University is the number one
college in the United States."Are those who attend Princeton (31)(high-performing)
than their peers?
High-ranking colleges in global education leagues attract greater talent in staff and students,
and boast better facilities, therefore generating more profits. In the United States, however, this
virtuous(良性的)cycle can tum vicious(恶性的)when less wealthy parents end up
(32)
(spend)their life savings on their children's education, while wealthier individuals
can simply bribe(向..行贿)admissions officers.
Over time, standards can fall as universities prioritize modifying statistics to achieve higher
rankings.U.S.News World Report, for example, claim to release objective annual reports on
the best colleges in the country. However, these rankings face criticism for potentially influencing
colleges to make minor adjustments to improve their position on the table.Non-profit (33)
they are registered to be,some universities have effectively become businesses focusing
on the bottom line.
I didn't care about college rankings for years (34)
I recently saw something
different. This past October,Shanghai Ranking Consultancy unveiled the Global Ranking of
Academic Subjects 2023,(35)universities worldwide were assessed across 55 subjects
in five disciplines.
That said, how much weight should you give to these rankings? In my opinion, college
rankings(36)(serve)as a starting point, offering a glimpse into reputation and strengths of
institutions. However, they are not the only factor(37)
(dedicate)to finalizing your
decision. There are many aspects to a university education that (38)_(address)only

About five years ago,I taught a three-month program to prepare Peking University students
for overseas exchange programs in England. While most of them were enthusiastic about
conquering the academic world, others moved at a much slower pace, displaying low motivation.
It wasn't merely (39)

Cultural Confidence Glows via China-chic
If you look around your city, you might spot girls wearing hanfu in subways or people
wearing T-shirts with Chinese characters on the streets.A new trend is taking hold in
China-guochao,or"China-chic".
According to a recently published report,(41)
_related to guochao on Dianping,a
lifestyle information platform, have risen by 170 percent from the same period last year, and
reviews have risen by nearly 40 percent.China-chic is happening, but what is it?
The term(42)the rise of China's native fashion trends. It has expanded the concept
of "Made in China"and has been recognized as the representation of Chinese culture and
aesthetics offered by homegrown Chinese brands, according to CGTN.
China-chic came into the (43)in 2018.Before that,big-name foreign companies
dominated the world market. To win market share, many Chinese brands followed in the footsteps
of these Western brands. But that year,Chinese sportswear brand Li-Ning(44)things up.
During the 2018 New York Fashion Week,Li-Ning introduced its(45)_Daoism-inspired
Wu Dao collection. It immediately grabbed attention at home and abroad. As a result, the
company recorded 20 percent revenue growth in 2018,marking the first time the brand's revenue
had (46)
the 10-billion-yuan mark since its founding.
The trend to embrace brands designed (47)
has since spread rapidly to various
sectors and products, from food and drinks to clothing, mobile phones and electric vehicles. For
example,White Rabbit, whose sweet candy brings back childhood memories for many,(48)
its perfume and lip balm."We want White Rabbit to be a brand that young people want
to share,"Shen Qinfeng,the company's marketing manager,told People's Daily.
Last year, several Western brands boycotted (Xinjiang cotton. To show national pride
and cultural confidence, the"I support Xinjiang cotton"(49)
spread across the country.
Many Chinese people turned to brands that support Xinjiang cotton, like Li-Ning and Anta.
No matter how the guochao trend evolves, there's one thing that won't change:As customers'
sense of identification with and pride in traditional culture continues to strengthen, traditional
culture will (50)
_empower new forms of consumption and activate new consumption
dynamics,said Wei Pengju.

The Story of an Hour
Knowing that Mrs.Mallard had a heart problem, her sister Josephine told her the news of her
husband's death,as gently as possible.Her husband's friend Richards was there,too,who
originally found Brently Mallard's name leading the list of"killed"in a railroad disaster.
She did not hear the story like many women, with a paralyzed inability to accept its
significance. She wept at once in her sister's arms. When the storm of grief had spent itself, she
went away to her room alone.
There stood, facing the open window,a comfortable, roomy armchair.Into this she sank,
pressed down by a physical exhaustion that haunted her body and seemed to reach into her soul.
She could see in the open square before her house the tops of trees that were all a quiver
(with the new spring life. The delicious breath of rain was in the air.The notes of a distant
song which someone was singing reached her faintly, with countless sparrows twittering in the
eaves(屋檐).
There was something coming to her.It was too subtle to name. But she felt it."Free, free,
free!"Her pulse beat fast, and the coursing blood warmed and relaxed every inch of her body.
She saw beyond that bitter moment long years ahead that would belong to her absolutely.
And she opened and spread her arms out to them in welcome.
There would be no one to live for during those coming years;she would live for herself.
There would be no powerful will bending hers in that blind persistence with which men and
women believe they have a right to impose a private will upon a fellow-creature.
"Free!Body and soul free!"she kept whispering.
"Louise,open the door!I beg,open the door-you will make yourself ill"Josephine
requested.
“Go away.I am not making myself ill..”No;she was drinking in the very elixir of life(长生不
老药)through that open window.
She opened the door to her sister repeated requests. There was a feverish triumph in her eyes,
and she seemed like a goddess of Victory.Together they walked down the stairs.Richards stood
waiting for them at the bottom.
Someone was opening the front door with a key.It was Brently Mallard who entered,
carrying his suitcase and umbrella. He had been far from the scene of the accident, and did not
even know there had been one.He stood amazed at Josephine's harsh cry;at Richards'quick
motion to keep him out of his wife's sight.
But Richards was too late.
When the doctors came, they said she had died of heart disease-of joy that kills.

Gothic fiction is a genre of literature featuring the elements of fear, horror, and the
supernatural. There are often characters such as vampires (and evil spirits.Common
subject matter includes family curses ()mystery and madness.Gothic fiction is the
forerunner of the modern horror genre, although the original genre has continued to have a faithful
following.
Originating in the late 18th century, this type of fiction was a branch of the larger Romantic
movement that sought to stimulate strong emotions in the reader. The genre is so called because it
tends to use medieval architecture as its settings, reminding people of the terrifying
darkness time of the Middle Age.Gothic fictions place heavy emphasis on atmosphere, building
suspense and a sense of unease in the reader.
Although the novel is often considered the best example of this genre, some poetry and short
stories can also be characterized as Gothic, such as those written by the Graveyard Poets of late
18th century England and the short stories of Edgar Allen Poe.These works of literature have
influenced Gothic writers ever since they were published.
Gothic fiction often deals with past eras.In its early days, the genre took the medieval period
as a major inspiration.Modern examples of this type of fiction have continued the tendency to
look to past eras. They often use such settings as colonial(殖民时期的)America,Victorian
England or the pre-Civil War southem United States. Those set in the present day might take place
in a 19-century building, much in the way that early works commonly used medieval castles as
their settings.
Gothic novels were among the most popular fiction of the late 18th century.Famous
examples include Horace Walpole's The Castle of Otranto and Anne Radcliffe's The Mysteries of
Udolpho.Although it was less popular during the Victorian era,Gothic fiction was once again
among the most-read literature of the late 20th century. The vampire, one of the favorite stock
characters of this genre, appeared in several important works of this era, including Sheridan
LeFanu's Carmilla and Bram Stoker's Dracula.Writers such as William Faulkner,Harper Lee and
10
Tennessee Williams applied the style to their treatment of the American South. But the influence
of Gothic fiction can not only be noted in literature but also in film and music. For example, many
of Alfred Hitchcock's films,as well as the books on which they were based, could be considered
Gothic.
73.According to the article,Gothic fiction came into existence
A.in the Middle Age.
B.in the early eighteenth century.
C.in the era of Romantic movement.
D.in the Victorian era and the 20th century.
74.Which of following statement about the Gothic genre is TRUE?
A.The Gothic genre paved the way for modern horror genre.
B.The Gothic genre overtook Romantic literary works.
C.The Gothic writing style influenced the medieval architecture
D.Vampire was the most frequent character in Hitchcock's film.
75.Which of the following can we infer from the passage?
A.Edgar Allen Poe was a famous Gothic novelist.
B.All Gothic novels are set in the medieval period.
C.The Middle Ages was known for its terrifying darkness.
D.Carmilla is a popular Gothic novel in the 18th century.
76.Which of the following is most likely to be taken from a Gothic novel?
A.Philip woke early next morning. His sleep had been restless, but when he looked at the
sunshine that slid through the blinds, making patterns on the floor,he sighed with
satisfaction.
B.Miss Manette had taken some refreshment on the road, and required none then, and was
extremely anxious to see the gentleman from Tellson's immediately.
C.I fancied myself now like one of the ancient giants, which were said to live in caves,
where none could come at them;for I persuaded myself while I was here,if five hundred
savages were to hunt me,they could never find me out.
D.In the silence of the night, how we tremble with fright at the melancholy threat of their
tone! For every sound that floats, from the rust within their throats,is a groan.
Section C
Directions:Read the following passage.Fill in each blank with a proper sentence given below.
Each sentence can be used only once.Note that there are two more sentences than you need.
A.One is to confuse them with double discounting.
B.The main reason is that most people are useless at fractions().
C.Marketing types can draw lessons beyond just pricing, says Mr.Rao.
D.So retailers often take advantage of shoppers'preference for discounting.
E.They even control some irrelevant factors to make the studies more convincing.
F.The discount is by far the better, but the supposedly clever students viewed them as equivalent.
The Psychology of Discounting
When retailers want to persuade customers to buy a particular product. They typically offer it
at a discount.According to a new study to be published in the Journal of Marketing, they are
missing a trick.
A team of researchers, led by Akshay Rao of the University of Minnesota's Carlson School of
Management looked at consumer'attitudes to discounting.Shoppers, they found, much prefer
getting something extra free to getting something cheaper.77
Consumers often struggle to realize, for example, that a 20%increase in quantity is the same
as a 33%discount in price. They overwhelmingly assume the former is better value. In an
experiment, the researchers sold 73%more hand lotion when it was offered in a bonus pack than
when it carried an equivalent discount.
This commercial blind spot remains even when the deal clearly favors the discounted product.
In another experiment, this time on his undergraduates,Mr.Rao offered two deals on loose coffee
beans:33%extra free or 33%off the price.78_
Studies have shown other ways in which retailers can exploit consumers'mathematical
illiteracy.79 People are more likely to see a bargain in a product that has been
reduced by 20%,and then by an additional 25%than one which has been subject to an equivalent,
one-off,40%reduction.
_80_When advertising a new car's efficiency,for example,it is more convincing
to talk about the number of extra miles per gallon it does rather than the equivalent percentage fall
in fuel consumption. There may be lessons for regulators, too.Even well-educated shoppers are
easily foxed.Sending everyone back to school for maths refresher-courses seems out of the
question. But more noticeably displayed unit prices in shops and advertisements would be a great
help.
IV.Summary Writing
81.Directions:Read the following passage.Summarize the main idea and the main point(s)of the
passage in no more than 60 words.Use your own words as far as possible.
Optimism and Longevity
People with an optimistic mindset are associated with various positive health indicators,
particularly in the heart, metabolism, and the immune system.Optimism and pessimism can be
scientifically measured, placing an individual's attitude on a scale ranging from optimistic to
pessimistic.Researchers are able to clarify the link between optimism level and relative health
conditions.
In 2019,a review published in JAMA Network Open by Alan Rozanski,a cardiologist at
Mount Sinai Morningside hospital in New York City, compared the results of 15 different studies
for a total of 229,391 participants.Rozanski's meta-analysis showed that individuals with higher
levels of optimism experience a 35 percent lower risk of cardiovascular (events
compared to those with lower optimism,as well as a lower death rate.
The most optimistic people tend to take better care of themselves, especially by eating
healthily, exercising, and not smoking. These behaviours have been found to a much lesser extent
in the most pessimistic people, who tend to care less for their own well-being.The damage
produced by pessimism is also biological:The continuous wear and tear caused by elevated stress
hormones leads to heightened levels of body infection and promotes the onset of disease.
12
In 2012,Elizabeth Blackburn and Elissa Epel at the University of California at San Francisco,
in collaboration with other institutions, identified a correlation between pessimism and accelerated
telomere(染色体端粒)shortening in a group of women..A pessimistic attitude,.they found,.was
associated with shorter telomeres. In fact, optimism slows down telomere shortening,a significant
indicator of the aging of cells.
Optimism is thought to be genetically determined for only 25 percent of the population. For
the rest,it's the result of our social relationships or deliberate efforts to learn more positive
thinking. In an interview,Rozanski explained that"our way of thinking is habitual, unaware,so
the first step is to leam to control ourselves when negative thoughts assail us and commit
ourselves to change the way we look at things."Optimism, like a muscle, can be trained to
become stronger through positivity and gratitude,in order to replace an irrational negative thought
with a positive and more reasonable one.
