Do you know those mountains that look like tall stone pillars(柱子)? Many people are amazed when they first see the special mountains in Zhangjiajie. How were these mountains formed? Let's go back in time to learn their story.
A long time ago, Zhangjiajie was under the sea. Rivers carried sand(沙子) to the bottom of the sea. Over time, new layers(层) of sand covered the old layers. The weigh of the new layers pressed the old layers together. After millions of years, the sand turned into hard rock called sandstone.
Then something wonderful happened. The seabed slowly rose and became dry land. The sandstone began to break into large blocks.
Then nature's artists-wind and water-went to work. Strong winds blew against the sandstone, and rain created small holes(洞) in the rock. Like a knife cutting through cake, rivers ran through the holes and made them deeper. Little by little, these two artists shaped the sandstone into tall stone pillars.
But the story isn't finished. Even today, wind and rain continue to wear down the stone pillars. Scientists say that millions of years from now, these stone pillars will be gone completely. So we are lucky to see this natural wonder before it disappears.
