In a heart-stopping incident off the coast of San Diego last month, a beloved family dog was rescued from the ocean by local lifeguards after being caught in a dangerous offshore current. The story of Sadie, a black Labrador retriever-mix, highlights both the perils of coastal waters and the dedicated work of rescue teams.
The misfortune began when Sadie managed to leave the home where her owners, Alexis Barcellos and Brandon Valdez, were staying to watch a football game. By employing an Airtag tracker on her collar, her worried owners followed her signal down the coastline. Meanwhile, surfers in the Ocean Beach area spotted the dog in serious trouble, warning lifeguards that the animal had been pulled into a powerful offshore current near a rocky jetty(码头).
Authorities quickly launched a search operation involving a U.S. Coast Guard boat and lifeguard teams. Lifeguards Garrett Smerdon and Jack Alldredge joined the mission using personal watercraft, scanning the rough waters for over an hour. As hope began to fade, they received instructions to continue searching for only ten more minutes.
Despite the challenge, the lifeguards remained hopeful. Knowing Labrador retrievers are strong swimmers and brave animals, Smerdon believed there was a good chance that Sadie could still be alive. Just as the search was about to be called off, Alldredge spotted a small, dark shape far out in the water. “We got closer and closer, and then we realized it was her and we were pretty excited,” he said.
Approaching cautiously, they found Sadie exhausted but afloat roughly half a mile offshore near South Mission Beach. “She was super happy to see us, for sure,” Smerdon noted. The lifeguards safely transferred the weary dog to a surf rescue boat, which brought her back to shore for an emotional reunion with her overjoyed owners.
The adventure had an impact on Sadie. Her paws(爪子)and nails were badly injured from her desperate attempts to climb onto the jetty rocks, so her owners had to carry her for about a week. However, her spirit remained unbroken. “We are just beyond grateful she is home safe with us,” Barcellos stated.
24. What does the underlined word “perils” in the first paragraph refer to?
A. Changes. B. Benefits. C. Dangers. D. Secrets.
25. How did the owners follow Sadie’s signal?
A. With the lifeguards’ help. B. Through surfers’ reports.
C. By means of a Coast Guard boat. D. By using an Airtag tracker.
26. Why were Sadie’s paws and nails injured?
A. She swam in cold waters for hours. B. She fought with other animals.
C. She tried to climb onto jetty rocks. D. Lifeguards transferred her carelessly.
27. Which words best describe the rescue operation?
A. Fast but fruitless. B. Lengthy and disappointing.
C. Simple and effective. D. Difficult but successful.

In the rapidly evolving world of entertainment, a new kind of star is generating both excitement and concern. Tilly Norwood, an AI-generated actress, is at the center of a growing debate. Her creator claims she has the potential to become a global hit, even comparing her future stardom to that of Scarlett Johansson. This development highlights how AI is making its way into many areas of the job market, including the creative industries.
Tilly is the creation of Xicoia, an AI talent studio founded by Dutch technologist Emily Van der Velden under her production company, Particle 6 Productions. Tilly is the studio’s first major project. To build her presence, Xicoia has been actively posting photos and videos of Tilly on social media. These posts show her in various situations — from thrillers to romantic period pieces — to demonstrate her ability to play different roles.
Reportedly, Hollywood talent agents have already shown interest in representing this digital actress. Van der Velden believes that AI can be a powerful tool for creativity, freeing storytellers from financial limitations and opening up new artistic possibilities.
However, not everyone shares this optimistic view. The actors’ guild (行业协会) SAG-AFTRA has strongly criticized the project. In an official statement, it clarifies that Tilly is not an actor but a character created by a computer program. It emphasizes that this AI was trained using the work of many professional performers without their permission or payment. The guild argues that AI actors lack real-life experiences and genuine emotion, and it believes audiences are not interested in the content without authentic human emotion. Furthermore, it sees the technology as a threat that could put human actors out of work and devalue their artistry.
Indeed, AI-generated figures are not entirely new. Digital models, AI news presenters, and social media influencers have been around for years. Tilly Norwood represents the next frontier, pushing the boundaries of what is possible and challenging our traditional understanding of performance and stardom.
28. What can we learn about Tilly?
A. She paid performers for training. B. She is the first major project of Xicoia.
C. She has starred in some famous films. D. She is represented by SAG-AFTRA.
29. What is Van der Velden’s opinion on AI?
A. It devalues human artistry. B. It raises storytellers’ financial costs.
C. It helps boost creativity. D. It lacks genuine emotional expression.
30. What is SAG-AFTRA’s attitude toward AI-generated actors like Tilly?
A. Supportive. B. Neutral. C. Curious. D. Critical.
31. In which section of a newspaper is the text most likely to appear?
A. Entertainment. B. Science. C. Education. D. Health.

Buildings are being fitted with ice-based thermal (热力的) energy storage systems — often called “ice batteries” — to provide sustainable and efficient cooling. A notable example is Norton Audubon Hospital in Louisville, Kentucky, where about 74,000 gallons of water are frozen every night. The ice, stored in 27 large tanks, supplements or even replaces conventional air conditioning, helping maintain appropriate temperatures in operating rooms and keep patients comfortable.
This approach is gaining attention in the United States as a way to cool buildings without increasing carbon emissions. The system reduces electricity consumption and eases pressure on the power network. With rising temperatures and growing electricity demand, such systems offer a practical, sustainable cooling solution.
The principle is simple: During the night, when electricity rates are low and power network demand is minimal, water is frozen into ice. The next day, as the ice melts, it cools water that flows through pipes in the building, absorbing heat from indoor spaces. Cool air is then distributed through vents (通风口). Since the ice melts naturally without additional cooling energy, the system reduces daytime electricity consumption and lowers energy bills.
Experts point out that thermal storage helps shift energy use to off-peak times, which is increasingly valuable as power networks integrate more renewable but unsteady sources like solar and wind. In California, where solar power is plentiful during the day but often replaced by natural gas at night, ice batteries can provide cooling in the late afternoon and evening without drawing heavily on the power network.
Data centers represent another promising market. These facilities consume large amounts of electricity for both operation and cooling. Ice batteries could help reduce their energy footprint while also lowering fire risks compared to some battery-based storage systems.
As heatwaves become more frequent and air conditioning turns into a public health necessity, ice thermal storage offers a reliable and cleaner way to keep buildings cool. With greater awareness of its benefits, more hospitals, schools, offices, and data centers are expected to adopt the system in the coming years.
32. What are ice-based thermal energy storage systems mainly used for?
A. Supplying cold air for vents. B. Providing power for data centers.
C. Storing solar energy at night. D. Cooling buildings sustainably.
33. What does paragraph 3 mainly explain?
A. When to freeze water for cooling. B. How ice batteries increase energy bills.
C. The working process of ice batteries. D. The reason for reducing electricity use.
34. What advantage do ice batteries have in terms of energy use?
A. They use solar energy directly for cooling.
B. They shift energy consumption to off-peak hours.
C. They rely on natural gas to freeze water at night.
D. They reduce electricity use only during the day.
35. What does the author think of the future of ice batteries?
A. It is disappointing. B. It is doubtful.
C. It is promising. D. It is uncertain.

In the modern era of romance, technology plays a big role in how we connect with partners. Video calls and phone calls are great for deep conversations, but texting is the most popular way for daily communication. This allows couples to stay connected throughout the day without interrupting work or school.____36____. The way you text matters as much as the words you choose. Here are useful texting strategies to grow closer to your partner.
● Reply to messages in a timely manner. In the early stages of a relationship, trust hasn’t fully been built yet.____37____. Many young adults prefer a response within fifteen minutes. This doesn’t mean you have to be tied to your phone. It just shows your partner that they are a priority, making it clear you’re interested and reliable.

Alvarenga, a 37-year-old Salvadoran fisherman, earned a living in Mexico. He had a happy family — his 13-year-old daughter lived with her mother in El Salvador. He loved the sea and the simple beauty of his boat — a 25-foot-long, canoe-shaped boat designed to carve up the waves like a huge surfboard, with the engine mounted on the back.
On November 18, Alvarenga planned to head out into the Pacific at 10 am and work straight through until 4 pm the next day. His crewman was Ezequiel Córdoba aged 22. Loading the boat involved over a thousand pounds of equipment, including a five-foot-long, four-foot-high icebox that would soon be filled with a huge catch of fish.
As he sailed through the waves some 75 miles from land, Alvarenga let out his two-mile-long fishing line. The storm was gaining strength on land but had yet to reach the men far offshore. That changed around 1 am. Waves rocked the small boat back and forth. “Get us out of here!” Córdoba screamed to Alvarenga. “Let’s go back!”
The boat began to fill with water as the waves crashed over it, and Alvarenga decided to cut the fishing line, dumping (丢弃) thousands of dollars’ worth of equipment and fish into the sea. He then tried to head back to shore, but the motor suddenly died. Shortly after that, the radio died as well. The wind continued to rip (撕扯) straight offshore, driving the men farther out to sea.
It was five days before the winds finally eased. Alvarenga and Córdoba were now around 280 miles offshore. Their only hope of rescue was to be spotted by another ship. But that was difficult, as the boat sat low in the water. Now they were very far from the coast, a place where no fishermen would go.

第二节(满分25分)
【67题答案】
【答案】例文
During those long days, hunger and thirst became their worst enemies. The men got weaker with each passing day. The heat of the sun burned their skin, and they had nothing but a small amount of fish to eat. They couldn’t collect fresh water until the rain finally came. Alvarenga tried to stay positive, offering words of encouragement, but deep down, both knew they were on the brink of collapse. Their energy faded quickly, but still, they held on to the hope that a rescue would come. Alvarenga often thought of his daughter, drawing strength from the thought of seeing her again.
Not until the 14th day did they finally spot a ship in the distance. They waved with all their strength, desperate to be seen. The crew of the ship, recognizing their signals, acted immediately, bringing the men aboard and offering water, food and medical care. They were too weak to speak at first, but the overwhelming relief of being rescued was enough to keep them going. They could hardly believe that their nightmare was over. Thanks to their will to survive and a stroke of luck, they made it through their unimaginable journey at sea.
