Fou Ts'ong, a Chinese-born pianist known for his sensitive interpretations of Chopin, Debussy and Mozart, died at a hospital in London, where he had lived for many years. He was 86.
A lover of classical music from a young age,Mr.Fou began taking piano lessons when he was 7.Mr.Fou made his first stage appearance in 1952.The concert caught the attention of officials in Beijing, who selected him to compete and tour in Eastern Europe.Mr.Fou soon moved to Poland, where he studied at the Warsaw Conservatory on a scholarship to prepare for the fifth International Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw in 1955.He practiced so diligently that he hurt his fingers and was nearly cut from the first round of the competition.
Mr.Fou was one of the first Chinese pianists to achieve global prominence (名声) when he took third place in the International Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw in 1955.He also won a special prize for his performance of Chopin's mazurkas.Almost overnight, he became a national hero.To China, Mr.Fou's recognition in a well-known international competition was proof that the country could stand on its own artistically in the West.Chinese reporters flocked to interview Mr.Fou,while many others sought out his father, Fu Lei,for advice on educating children.
In 1981, a volume of letters written by his father, primarily to Mr.Fou, was published in China.Full of advice, encouragement, life teachings and strict paternal love, the book Fu Lei's Family Letters became a best-seller in China.Besides influencing a generation of Chinese, Mr.Fu's words resonated long after his death among people for whom they were intended.
“My father had a saying that ‘First you must be a person, then an artist, and then a musician, and only then can you be a pianist,’” Mr.Fou once recalled in an interview.“Even now, I believe in this order—that it should be this way and that I am this way.”

At the age of 43, while working a full-time job and raising my family, I decided to pursue a doctorate(博士学位), studying the most successful physician-scientists of our generation to investigate whether there was anything special about their habits, mindsets(思维模式)or lifestyles: something that could be later replicated (复制) in researchers' training programmes. My research focused on Nobel Prize winners, National Institutes of Health directors, Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigators, and winners of top awards such as the Breakthrough Prizes and Lasker Awards.
After graduation, I continued my research on success, branching out into studying other extreme high achievers. It is evident in the course of the research that the mindset of a Nobel Prize-winning scientist is analogous to that of an Olympic champion or an astronaut. On this basis, it indicates that if their mindsets are shared across fields in this way, then success becomes a skill that can be learned, going far beyond potential talent.
What defines(下定义)success is a mixed bag, and its definition varies among different people. With multiple rounds of research conducted, I consider that successful people are those who have created a shift(转变) in their field, who are recognized for their achievements, and who give back and help others to succeed as well.Generally, they are widely praised in their field, having won notable awards and honors.
In my latest book, The Success Factor, I outlined the four mindsets found in extreme high achievers and offered ideas, underlined(强调)by adult-learning theory, on how others can develop the skills required to succeed in a way that fits in with their careers and lives.Of course, simply copying the habits of an award-winning scientist doesn't mean you'll become a Nobel Prize winner, but, by imitating their mindsets, you can set yourself on the path to success.
No one aims to be average in life.People want to succeed but often lack the understanding of how to achieve more.By learning from some of the most successful scientists of this generation, we can apply great lessons to our careers.
8.What can we know about the author when he was 43?
A.He started a training program.
B.He lost his job due to his poor performance.
C.He faced great challenges in raising his family.
D.He was determined to take up advanced studies.
9.What does the underlined part “is analogous to ” in paragraph 2 mean most probably?
A.Is similar to. B.Is useful for.
C.Is contrary to. D.Is fit for.
10.What did the author stress in his book The Success Factor?
A.We'd better investigate adult-learning theory.
B.We'd better master more professional skills.
C.We should learn to maintain good mindsets.
D.We should attach importance to our careers and lives.
11.Which of the following would the author agree with?
A.Failure is not an option.
B.Success can be learned.
C.People should try to achieve more.
D.It's essential to identify our potential talent.

8.解析 D 细节理解题。根据第一段的“At the age of 43, while working a full-time job and raising my family, I decided to pursue a doctorate(博士学位), studying the most successful physician-scientists of our generation to investigate whether there was anything special about their habits, mindsets(思维模式)or lifestyles: something that could be later replicated (复制) in researchers' training programmes.(43岁时,我一边做着全职工作,养着家,我一边决定攻读博士学位,研究我们这一代最成功的物理学家兼科学家,以调查他们的习惯、心态和生活方式是否有什么特别之处:这些东西日后可以在研究人员的培训项目中复制。)”可知,在43岁的时候,作者决定攻读博士学位。故选D。
9.解析 A 词句猜测题。根据画线词后面的“On this basis, it indicates that if their mindsets are shared across fields in this way, then success becomes a skill that can be learned, going far beyond potential talent.(在此基础上,它表明,如果他们的心态以这种方式跨领域共享,那么成功就成为一种可以学习的技能,远远超越了潜在的天赋。)”,特别是句中的动词“shared”可知,画线词前面提到的诺贝尔奖获得者和画线词后面提到的奥运会冠军或宇航员,他们的心态应该是有相似之处。也就是说画线词的意义为“与……相似”。故选A。
10.解析 C 细节理解题。根据第四段的第一句话“In my latest book, The Success Factor, I outlined the four mindsets found in extreme high achievers and offered ideas, underlined(强调)by adult-learning theory, on how others can develop the skills required to succeed in a way that fits in with their careers and lives.(在我的新书《成功因素》中,我概述了成功人士的四种心态,并用成人学习理论强调了其他人如何发展成功所需的技能,以适应他们的职业和生活的。)”

Living abroad brings many challenges. One of them is looking for the best way to get used to a new culture while not losing your identity. In this process I have noticed that it's very positive to be in touch with expats, especially with expats from your own country. Why? Read on.
I have been in Germany for one year and I have had many experiences. Some of them were more positive than others. But when unexpected things happened,it was nice to meet with other Colombians to listen to their experiences.Through this exchange, I have realized that others have felt the same, and that I am not the only one who has had difficulties.I also believe that they, too, have taken something from my experiences.
Colombians are really friendly and usually don't have any problems meeting new people. This has helped me to increase my social network quickly. When I arrived in Germany, I had two Colombian friends here, and I have kept in touch with one of them who helped me to meet other people, not only Colombians.
Most likely,if you are a foreigner in Germany, your native language is not German. This is the way it is in my case.My native language is Spanish and I really enjoy speaking it.But it's even better when I can share my opinions, thoughts, and worries with other expats, or when I can talk about topics which would not seem interesting to local Germans.Besides, it's possible to use lines and jokes that only those who come from the same country or the same corner of the world can understand.
I like social networks and since I arrived in Germany, I have been connected with other expats through social networks. On these social networks,I can communicate with others and share my experiences.Meanwhile,I also find interesting information that I don't usually get in other forms of media, such as information about jobs, flats, language courses, offers of Colombian products and events which are not in the local newspapers.

Failing Is Better than Not Trying at All
Do you remember the last time you tried something new and failed? 16 Failure is an important part of learning and growing.Don't immediately give up—try as much as you can. Here are several realizations that can help push you to try more.
17 You can be filled with thoughts of what could have happened if you had only decided to try.Something good could have happened, and you will never know unless you try.
Sure, there are a lot of uncertainties that come when trying something new. 18 However, not every result is unpleasant from doing something. You have to work hard and be patient if you want positive results.
Repeated failures can be very discouraging. But you don't become a complete loser just because you failed. 19 Every failure can show what doesn't work so that you can try something different next time.
Trying something new and different can be risky.Your time and efforts can be wasted when nothing happens. 20 Some of the most significant gains can only be made by taking risky strategies.
It takes time to achieve success and your goal, but when you have tried everything available and nothing had happened, this is the only time you should give up and stop trying.
A.If so, don't worry.
B.So you never know if you can be successful or not.
C.There are several reasons why you may fear failures.
D.However, we won't know if something fruitful can occur unless we try.
E.Having a solid support system can also help you build confidence in taking risks.

The next morning, Hilda arrived at the park early. She put on her scuba gear (水下呼吸器) and jumped into the tank for her usual, underwater sweep.Finding nothing in the tank, she climbed out of the water just in time to see Katherine jumping in on the other side. After what happened yesterday, Hilda knew what she was doing. She watched as Katherine performed her underwater search, but Hilda wasn't surprised when she surfaced empty-handed.
During the tank sweeps, Maya had been swimming playfully, but now the dolphin stopped suddenly and swam to the back part of the tank where the filter (过滤) box was located. She stuck her nose down behind the box and then swam away. What was Maya doing back there? Hilda wondered. She jumped back into the water and swam over to take a look behind the box, and her question was answered.Hilda then swam across the tank following Maya's path and emerged from the water to find Katherine removing her scuba gear.As Katherine turned around, her mouth dropped open. There was Maya at the edge of the tank with a comb (梳子) in her mouth waiting for her treat.
“Maya! Where did you get that?” demanded Katherine, taking the comb and throwing her a fish.“I know where she got it,” declared Hilda climbing out of the tank with a handful of items still wet from their watery, resting place.“What's all this?” Katherine asked, obviously confused.
“This is Maya's secret,” Hilda said with a big smile.
Now Katherine realized what had been going on.

“This is Maya's secret,” Hilda said with a big smile. The truth of the matter, Hilda continued, is that Maya has been secretly collecting items from the tank, hiding them near the filter in the back of the tank. When you train her, she will give you some items so that she can get treats from you.“Really? How do you know that?” Catherine asked in surprise.Hilda laughed and replied, “It took me a long time to discover this secret, too. It's not easy to follow Maya.”
Now Katherine realized what had been going on. Katherine thought to herself, this is really a clever dolphin. And she said to Hilda, “Well, Maya loves treats, so we'll work together, and you'll secretly help her collect a few things and put them in the filter at the back of the tank.I'll give her treats, the number of which I can increase.” Hilda replied, “Good idea, let's do it.” From then on, the Sea Life Park is full of warmth and harmony.Maya's performance in front of the audience is getting better and better.
