三、阅读理解
A
Different countries have different social manners. Sometimes what is considered polite in one country may be regarded as impolite or strange in another. If we want to get along well with people from different cultures, learning basic manners becomes really necessary.
In most Western countries, people usually shake hands firmly and look into each other’s eyes when meeting someone for the first time. They greatly value personal space and are not comfortable standing too close while talking. They also mind others touching them casually during communication. By contrast, many people in Asian countries prefer to nod slightly or bow gently instead of shaking hands. They feel natural and relaxed to stay a little nearer when having a conversation.
When it comes to receiving praise, Westerners often accept it openly and happily, and simply reply with “Thank you” with a smile. However, Chinese people are usually modest and quiet. They are used to hiding their pride and seldom agree with praise directly. Besides, there are also clear differences in table manners. Westerners try to keep silent and never talk with food in their mouths, while chatting freely over meals is quite common and warm in many Chinese families.
Learning about cultural manners not only helps us behave properly when communicating with foreign friends, but also lets us understand cultural differences better. It is an important way to show respect and build friendly relationships with people around the world.

I was now in my twenty-seventh year on the island. One evening, Friday went out to look for food. But soon he was back, and he looked very afraid.
“Master! Master!” he cried, “There’s a great ship near the island, and men are coming to the beach in a boat!”
I jumped up and ran with him down to the beach. I saw that it was an English ship! But why was it here? English ships never came this way. Perhaps they were pirates (海盗)! “Don’t let them see you, Friday!” I called, “We’ll hide in the trees and watch.”
There were eleven men in the boat, but three of them were prisoners (囚犯). Their arms were tied with a rope. The other sailors pushed the three prisoners up the beach, laughing and shouting and hitting them. The three prisoners walked slowly along the beach and sat down under a tree, not far from us. They looked very unhappy.
Very quietly, I came up behind them through the trees, and called out to them in English.
“Don’t be afraid,” I said. “I’m an Englishman. Perhaps I can help you.”
The three men turned and looked at me. They did not answer at once. They were too surprised.
Perhaps they thought I was a wild man, in my strange clothes made of animals’ skins, and with my long hair and beard (胡须).
Then the oldest man spoke, “I am the captain of that ship,” he said, “and these two men are my first and second officers. Last night there was a mutiny (叛乱), and the seamen took the ship from me. Now they’re going to leave the three of us here, to die on this island.”
“Do these mutineers (叛军) have guns?”
“Only two,” he answered, “and they’ve left those on the boat.”
“All right,” I said. “We’ll fight them. But if we get your ship back for you, you must take me back to England.”
Friday ran back to my house to get all the guns, and the captain and I made a plan.

Emily Post was born in Maryland but moved to New York when she was still a child. At the beginning of the 20th century, she began to write books and articles for magazines. She wrote Etiquette, a book about good manners, in 1922. In the 1930s, she had her own radio programme and began to write newspaper articles on this subject. Her articles were very popular, and she continued to write them until she died.
To Emily Post, good manners can be learnt. She had advice on how to behave in every situation. However, her best advice was to be yourself. For example, some people in the West want to fit into other groups by changing the way they speak. Unfortunately, this does not help them fit in. Instead, it often just makes them seem strange. While we should all have good manners, we do not have to be exactly like someone else.
