In Spain, people usually greet someone with a kiss on both cheeks, even if they’re not very close to the person. People shake hands on more formal occasions. When it comes to dining, it’s important to keep your elbows off the table and wait for the host to start eating. Praising the meal is also polite. In social situations, hugging is common among friends and family, but not with strangers. Finally, if you visit someone’s home, it’s polite to bring a small present, like flowers or chocolate. ①The Amazon Rainforest, the world’s largest rainforest, lies in South America. According to a new study, the Amazon Rainforest may become grassland in a few years.
②Climate change and human activities make it “sick”. Usually, the rainforest can recover itself. But now, it feels too “tired” to get better. According to the latest study, many trees there may die, and the Amazon Rainforest may turn into hot, dry grassland after a few years.
③Why is the Amazon “sick”?
④The Amazon Rainforest is one of the world’s wettest places. But since 2005, three droughts have hit the rainforest. They were caused by climate change. The trees don’t have enough water to grow. What’s worse, as they become dry, they can easily catch fire.
⑤Besides, people cut down rainforest trees for wood. They burn the forest to make farmland. These kinds of activities have made about 17% of the rainforest disappear.
⑥What will happen if we lose the Amazon Rainforest?
⑦The Amazon Rainforest is called “the lungs of the earth”. The rich plants there take CO2 (二氧化碳) out of the air and make oxygen (氧气). They make more than 20% of the planet’s oxygen. If the Amazon Rainforest “dies”, there will be more CO2 and our planet will become even hotter. The Amazon Rainforest is also home to
over 3 million animals and plants. Many of them can’t live anywhere else. They would very likely disappear.
28. What does the new study show?
A. The Amazon Rainforest was once grassland.
B. The Amazon Rainforest makes climate change worse.

B. Because it makes over one-fifth of the earth’s oxygen.
C. Because people and animals can breathe more easily there.
31. What is the writer’s opinion about the future of the Amazon Rainforest?
A. Hopeful. B. Uncertain. C. Worried.

第一节 简答和翻译(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分)
Everyone wants to write beautifully. And I love something special—Chinese calligraphy.
When I was a little child, I loved to watch my grandparents write Chinese characters with ink brushes. Later I came to learn about many Chinese calligraphers, such as Wang Xizhi of the Jin Dynasty.
At the age of 9, I joined a writing class to learn Chinese calligraphy. The teacher showed many of his calligraphy works. I told myself that I would practise hard and try to become as good as him.
At first, I followed the teacher carefully. As soon as the teacher wrote a character, I wrote the same one. Before long I could write many difficult characters. I was happy and believed that I was talented (有天赋的) in Chinese calligraphy.
However, after a year of learning, although I practised hard, the teacher pointed out some problems in my calligraphy. I thought it was just a way to improve my writing skills and about mimicry (模仿), but he told me that Chinese calligraphy is part of Chinese culture and a creation from the heart. He said that a writer should think carefully about what he wants to show before he starts to write.
I’m not sure if I fully understood the teacher. But from then on, I spent more time thinking and practising my calligraphy. I will continue practising and I hope one day I can know the essence (精华) of Chinese calligraphy.

Dear Jason,
I’m so glad to hear that you are coming to China. Let me tell you some customs in China.
When you meet people, you should shake hands with them. It is a friendly way to say hello. When visiting a friend’s home, remember to be on time. It is considered impolite to be late. At the table, wait for the elderly to start eating first. This shows respect to older people. Also, try not to make too much noise while eating. Following these customs will help you make a good impression. I believe you will enjoy your stay here very much.

C. The Amazon will have fewer trees in the future.
29. What does the underlined word “recover” mean in paragraph②?
A. get well again B. get worse C. catch fire
30. Why is the Amazon Rainforest called “the lungs of the earth” in paragraph⑦?
A. Because it has 17 percent of the earth’s trees.
B. Because it makes over one-fifth of the earth’s oxygen.
C. Because people and animals can breathe more easily there.
31. What is the writer’s opinion about the future of the Amazon Rainforest?
A. Hopeful. B. Uncertain. C. Worried.
