Whatever stage of life you're at, wherever you go and whatever project you do in GDA, you'll create positive changes in a poor and remote community (社区).
We work with volunteers of all ages and backgrounds. Most of our volunteers are aged 17~24. Now we need volunteer managers aged 25~75. They are extremely important in the safe and effective running of our programmes. We have such roles as project managers, mountain leaders, and communication officers.
Depending on which role you choose, you could help to increase a community's access to safe drinking water, or help to protect valuable local cultures. You might also design an adventure challenge to train young volunteers.
Not only will you help our young volunteers to develop personally, you'll also learn new skills and increase your cultural awareness. You may have chances to meet new people who'll become your lifelong friends.

During the summer holiday some students might have been busy with traveling, summer camps and all kinds of courses. But a special group of Chinese middle school students decided to taste the hardship of life outside school.
Twelve students in a big city sold vegetables at a local market together. Within 12 days, they made more than 1,500 yuan. Among them, the oldest is 21 years old, while the youngest is just 10. They are all cousins in a big family and eight of them are from rural areas.
“Compared to traveling, such social practice connects us and makes us learn how tough our parents are,” said Dalin, 18, to the City Morning Post. Dalin, a senior high graduate, and her 12yearold brother Xiaolin came up with the idea.
They learned to work hard to sell their veggies. Every morning they had to wake up at 3 o'clock. Some of them went to the farmer's market to buy vegetables. Some of them went to the local market to take up a temporary stall. To lower the cost, they learned to bargain with the sellers.
At about 6:30 am, they began to sell vegetables. They peddled loudly to attract customers. After several days, they got some experience, too.
For example, it was better to put vegetables in order and bigger ones on top. When the vegetables are too heavy, they should give customers an extra plastic bag.
When they finally packed up and went home, they had a small meeting. Everyone took notes and shared their feelings.
“We are tired,” said Dalin. “but we gained a lot”.

Kindness and kids just seem to go hand in hand. But 62% of more than 2,600 participants in the NBC News State of Kindness Poll believe that today's kids are less kind than those in the past. Women (66%) feel about this kindness fall more strongly than men (58%). Most of the participants who feel that way (77%) think parents caused the seeming lack of kindness among today's children, with a few thinking that society, schools, or friends caused it.
At the same time, Americans say they don't put kindness first when it comes to teaching kids values. Among all participants, honesty is taught more than kindness as well as other things like courage, leadership and strong work ethic (道德). But the younger generation—those aged 18~24—think highly of kindness rules. They choose kindness by 10% over honesty as the most important quality to teach kids.
The question of whether kindness is learned or taught—or somewhere in between—causes different opinions. According to the study, Americans have different opinions on whether kindness is something one is born with or needs to be learned and nurtured over time. Slightly more than half (52%) of the participants believe that all of us are born with the ability to show kindness, while 48% believe kindness must be developed.
Parenthood (父母身份) makes a difference to your thoughts on the causes of kindness. Those without kids (56%) are more likely to think that people are born to be kind, while 50% of the participants with kids think kindness is developed.
Also, 51% of dads and 54% of men with no kids believe kindness is something time is born with. Slightly more than half of the moms say kindness must be learned, while 48% believe it is what one is born with.

They say that“travel is the best teacher” and there is no better example of this idea than the Ming dynasty travel writer and geographer Xu Xiake (1587~1641). His book The Travel Notes of Xu Xiake, not only encouraged a love of travelling among Chinese people but provided important scientific information about the country's land and geography.
Born into a wealthy Jiangyin family, Xu became interested in books about different places at an early age and wanted to travel. When he was 18, however. Xu's father died and so, it seemed, did his travelling dreams. He now was responsible for the family farm and taking care of his 60yearold mother as tradition required.
But his mother had different ideas. Understanding her son's love of travel and valuing the knowledge he could get from such experiences, this modernthinking woman refused to keep her son at home. She agreed that Xu could travel for three months every year, when there was less farm work.
So at the age of twenty and with his mother's support, Xu set off for the first time, leaving behind not only his mother but his new wife as well. He would repeat this goodbye each year for most of the next 30 years. During this time, he travelled throughout the Ming kingdom, carefully studying the lands he passed through and recording his experiences and many discoveries in a diary. This diary, which once had over 500,000 words, would eventually become The Travel Notes of Xu Xiake.
Although rich, Xu avoided comfortable travel, preferring to go almost everywhere on foot. This way he could research the environment in detail and get a true picture of the natural world. Many of his trips were to hardtoreach mountain areas, and through wild forests where few people lived. His willingness to face hardships came at a cost however. Progress was slow and tiring and he was frequently sick, robbed and beaten during his journeys.
Sadly Xu became seriously ill during his last and longest journey, a 4year trip through the Southwest of China. He died in 1641, soon after returning to his hometown for the last time. When his diary was finally printed years after his death, much of it had been destroyed or lost. Although incomplete, it still made Xu a travelling legend around the world.
32.What is the passage mainly about?
A.The influence of Xu's book The Travel Notes of Xu Xiake.
B.The difficulties Xu Xiake faced in his travels.
C.The important discoveries made by Xu Xiake.
D.The general details of Xu Xiake's life story.
33.Which of the following best describes Xu's mother?
A.Supportive and openminded. B.Kind but uneducated.
C.Helpful and hardworking. D.Strict but interesting.
34.Why did Xu prefer walking during his travels?
A.It gave him the chance to meet different kinds of people.
B.It allowed him to see and study the environment in detail.
C.It helped him to save money and travel for a longer time.
D.It was the only way to reach the places he was interested in.
35.What is true about Xu's book The Travel Notes of Xu Xiake?
A.It was mainly about the different people of China.

Michael goes to his grandparents' once or twice every month, and he decided to go round to see them when he had a free evening the week before they went for a holiday.
“Come in, Michael,” his grandfather said. “I'm glad you've come round. Take your coat off and sit down for a minute. Let's see the end of this programme on TV. Your grandmother and I watch it every week at this time of night.” So Michael sat in a comfortable chair, quietly waiting for the TV detective (侦探) to find out who the thief was.
Finally, his grandmother got up and turned the TV off. Then, she said, “I'm sorry, Michael, but I must go and see a friend for a few minutes. I'll come back soon. But while I'm out, perhaps you can help your grandfather to bring down the big blue case from the attic (阁楼). We want it for the holiday.”
They watched her going by. “Let's go round to the pub (小店) for a drink,” grandfather said. “That's a good idea,” Michael answered, “but let me give you a hand with the case. Tell me where it is and I'll get it out for you. It's in the attic, isn't it?”
Grandfather pulled down the corners of his mouth. “That's the trouble. It's not there. You can go up and look, but you won't find it. Perhaps, I lend it to somebody, but I can't remember. Your grandmother doesn't know, but she'll find out this week that we've lost our best case.” Michael laughed, “Don't worry. You can use mine. If I go home now I can bring it back in half an hour.” And he went home quickly before the old man could say no.

空处缺少代词it作形式主语,真正的主语为“to bridge the digital divide”。故填it。

One possible version:
An English Handwriting Exhibition
An exhibition of English handwriting, designed to raise students' awareness of writing neatly and beautifully, is on at the newlybuilt student center from Jan. 1 to Jan. 21. All the works on show were chosen from Senior one students. Varieties of handwriting styles are shown. The exhibition is highly spoken of and considered a visual feast! Not only do the students enjoy the elegant and amazing art form, but they are inspired to practice more. Students do hope this kind of activity can be held regularly.
第二节
One possible version:
But when Michael explained why he would lend his case to grandfather, his father suddenly felt ashamed. “Oh dear, I'm the one who borrowed the blue case the year before last,” his father cried, “Michael, please take it back for me and tell grandfather I'm very sorry.” When Michael walked into his grandparents' house with their lost case, grandfather laughed, “Your father borrowed it, I remember now. But let's not tell your grandmother. Put it against the wall there.”
Michael's grandmother came back from her friend's at that moment. When she saw the case by the wall, she laughed happily. Then she picked it up and found a small label—Michael's father's name and address on it. She suddenly understood why her husband did not want to go to the attic to look for the case. Because it was lost long ago. And he didn't tell her the truth for fear of breaking her heart. What a loving lie! Grandmother came over and hugged grandfather tightly, with tears of happiness in her eyes.
