China’s Fridges Use Less Power Starting in 2026
How much electricity does your fridge use? Because of the new rules starting on June 1, 2026, fridges in China use less electricity and provide more space for food, according to The Paper.
If you want to see how much electricity a fridge uses, look at the China Energy Label. It is a blue-and-white sticker on the front of the fridge. This label was first introduced in 2005. It shows levels from class 1 to class 5. Class 1 is the best. Many machines, like TVs and washing machines, also have this label to help people choose wisely.
The new rules are stricter. For example, before, a 500-liter fridge could be class 1 if it used 0.92 kilowatt-hours (kWh) each day. Under the new rules, it must use no more than 0.55 kWh. This can save about 135 kWh of electricity in a year and it costs about 68 yuan less, CCTV said.
Since our country sells about 60 million fridges each year, this means China can save about 8 billion kWh in electricity!
Fridge sizes also matter in the new rules. Expert Cheng Jianhong said fridge makers must give 10 to 30 percent more space inside. They can do this by using new technology, such as thinner insulation materials (绝缘材料).
The government also gives money back if people buy energy-saving fridges. For class 1 fridges, buyers can get up to 2,000 yuan back. For class 2 fridges, they get up to 1,500 yuan back, according to media reports.
31. How does the writer begin the passage?
A. By asking a question. B. By telling a story.
C. By giving an example. D. By comparing two things.
32. What can we infer about a class 1 fridge under the new label system from the passage?
A. It has less space for food inside.
B. It uses more electricity than before.
C. It is cheaper than a class 2 fridge.
D. It saves more electricity than before.
33. What does the word “They” in Paragraph 5 refer to?
A. The new rules. B. Fridge makers. C. Thinner materials. D. Expert Cheng Jianhong.
34. Which of the following is an opinion according to the passage?
A. It is a great way to save both energy and money by following the new rules.
B. The government will give money back if people buy energy-saving fridges.
C. The China Energy Label is a blue-and-white sticker on the front of the fridge.
D. Under the new rules, a 500-liter Class 1 fridge must use no more than 0.55 kWh.

The Dead Sea, lying between Israel and Jordan, is not a real sea but a salty lake. It sits about 430 metres below sea level, making it the lowest point on Earth’s land surface. It is famous as the saltiest lake in the world. It has much more salt. It is nearly ten times as salty as ordinary seawater.
With too much salt, almost no fish or plants can live in it, so people call it the Dead Sea. The most amazing feature of the Dead Sea is that people can float on the water without sinking. It is really an amazing natural wonder.
However, this special water body is facing trouble now. It is becoming smaller and drier year by year because of higher temperatures and more evaporation (蒸发).
If we do not take action, the Dead Sea may disappear in the future. To make these wonderful natural treasures exist for a longer time, we should learn more about such special waters and try our best to protect them.
