Sonam Wangdrak’s story begins not in a driver’s cab, but on the vast grasslands of the Xizang plateau. As a herdsman’s son, his first encounter with a train was a colorful picture in a textbook at age seven — a spark that lit a lifelong dream. For a boy who only began learning Mandarin in fourth grade, the path seemed distant. Yet, this dream carried him to the Lanzhou Railway School, where he spent holidays alone in his dormitory, determined to conquer tough subjects like mechanical drawing and circuit principles.
This commitment led him into the next life chapter when, in 2007, he joined the Qinghai-Xizang Railway Company, beginning a decade-long journey of honing his craft. The real challenge arrived with the Lhasa-Nyingchi Railway, Xizang’s first electrified line, snaking through mountains and over rivers. To master its demanding curves and slopes, Sonam designed a unique test: placing a whiteboard pen upright on the console. Every time it fell down, he would note the time, location, and throttle (油门) position, insisting until the ride became perfectly smooth.
He operated on a simple principle: there was always room for improvement. He would rush to learn from every engine failure, even on his days off and kept a notebook of technical notes. His most famous feat, however, was improving train coupling by balancing a water-filled cup and a stack of coins until he could link the carriages without disturbing them. A video of this “steady hand” miracle later won widespread admiration online.
On June 25, 2021, Sonam entered the cab of the Fuxing bullet train as its first driver on the new high-altitude line. With over 750,000 kilometers of safe driving and zero accidents to his name, he has been honored as a “National Model Worker.” From a child fascinated by a picture to the “Dragon Tamer” of the world’s highest railways, Sonam Wangdrak’s journey is a proof to how a single dream, fueled by constant dedication, can mount the roof of the world.
4. What initially inspired Sonam Wangdrak’s dream?
A. A photograph of a train in his school book.
B. His early mastery of the Mandarin language.
C. A visit to a train driver’s cab in his childhood.
D. His experience of moving from grassland to town.
5. What does “honing his craft” mean in paragraph2?
A. Repairing his tools. B. Polishing his skills.
C. Breaking his limits. D. Recording his work.
6. What qualities can best describe Sonam Wangdrak?
A. Ambitious and efficient. B. Curious and adventurous.
C. Self-disciplined and innovative. D. Persistent and perfection-seeking.
7. What is the passage mainly about?
A. A man who has a brilliant career. B. The growth of Xizang’s rail technology.
C. The success of a national railway project. D. A model realizing his dream via devotion.
【答案】4. A 5. B 6. D 7. D

At the Temple of Heaven in Beijing, the over 600-year-old UNESCO World Heritage Site, an animation played guards of honor marching at the same pace across a projector screen, their movements in harmony with the graceful melodies of ancient rituals (仪式). “Through virtual and digital display, cultural relics have become ‘alive’, enabling viewers to feel as if they were in ancient times,” said Sun Xiaobing, deputy director of Art Exhibitions China.
In recent years, China has used science and technology to breathe new life into its cultural relics and heritage, enriching people’s lives while also enhancing the nation’s cultural influence. The newly revised cultural relics protection law, issued in March, states firmly that technology, information, digitalization, and digital display should all come to the fore in cultural relic protection.
Cutting-edge technologies like AI, VR and AR provide multidimensional methods for the preservation, application and exhibition of relics, said Li Li, deputy director of the China Academy of Cultural Heritage. In archaeology, the National Cultural Heritage Administration aims to advance technological level, emphasizing genetic analysis, precision dating and other fields.
Zhang Zhiguo, deputy director of the National Centre for Archaeology, said technology has been widely adopted in submarine cultural heritage protection. Archaeologists cover the surface of some fragile artifacts (历史文物) with carbon fiber to strengthen them, so that they can be extracted safely from the underwater environment. Relevant spectroscopy (光谱学) technologies can detect the compound composition of rust on artifacts, contributing to restoration.
Qu Liang, director of the Conservation Standards Department of the Palace Museum, said, “In the past, we only saw the surface of some cultural relics. Through X-ray scanning, we could observe their internal structure in the 3D digital model and eventually better understand their manufacturing process.”
Former UNESCO director-general Irina Bokova noted that China has become a leader in using technology to protect cultural heritage.
8. How does digital display help people understand cultural relics?
A. By restoring broken artifacts. B. By immersing them in ancient lives.
C. By interacting with guards of honor. D. By attracting them to heritage sites.
9. Which of the following can best replace the underlined expression?
A. face more challenges B. rise to dominance
C. play a bigger role D. develop more quickly
10. What do archaeologists do with fragile underwater artifacts?
A. They use X-ray scanning. B. They use a special coating.
C. They build 3D digital models. D. They detect their compound composition.
11. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Digital Display Gains Wide Popularity B. China Leads in Global Heritage Protection
C. China’s Cultural Relics Have Global Influence D. Technology Brings New Life to Cultural Relics
【答案】8. B 9. C 10. B 11. D

D
First impressions can be harsh. One mistake, and you might feel like you’ll forever be seen as an idiot in someone’s eyes. However, I believe reality is kinder than that.
Making a first impression is like trying to keep a door open with your foot. Many encounters with strangers are short and quick and may never happen again. Sometimes that can be a blessing: If the person you meet doesn’t care to remember you, you’ll quickly fade into the crowd of strangers in their mind, avoiding any negative or lasting impression. Other times, it can be disappointing — imagine striking up a conversation with someone interesting only to part ways before exchanging contact information.
To avoid being forgotten, you need to do something memorable — but not something foolish. Make an impression by asking an insightful question or making someone laugh. This means taking risks and avoiding bland (乏味的) small talk; if that’s not what you offer, you’ll likely be pushed to the back of their memory, unlikely to be remembered again.
But what if you messed up your first impression? And one day you see them looking at you, recalling the time you embarrassed yourself, and they’re walking toward you thinking, “I know you from somewhere ...”
In that case, your second impression needs to be better. In my 19 years of making first impressions — some not so great — I’ve found that people will give you a second chance if you give them something to care about. Just because you messed up the first time doesn’t mean you should withdraw and stop being interesting. You should try harder: Listen well, ask relevant questions, smile often, tell a joke, and share what you care about.
None of this is a guarantee “How to Make People Like You” guide, by the way. I’m not even sure if any of this works. But people seem to like talking to me, so maybe some of it does work.
Anyway, if this is your first impression of me, I hope it’s been a good one.
12. What are first impressions like according to paragraph 2?
A. Casual and interesting. B. Brief and temporary.
C. Important and lasting. D. Negative and unstable.
13. How can you make a memorable first impression according to the author?
A. By engaging in small talk. B. By avoiding risky behavior.
C. By demonstrating insight or humor. D. By sharing your personal experiences.
14. What does the author recommend doing if you mess up your first impression?
A. Apologizing immediately. B. Avoiding seeing the person again.
C. Forgetting about the encounter. D. Making a better second impression.
15. Which would be the best title for the text?
A. The Disadvantages of Bad First Impressions B. First Impressions Aren’t Everything
C. How to Win People’s Trust in Daily Life D. Why First Impressions Last Forever
【答案】12. B 13. C 14. D 15. B
【解析】
【导语】文章讲述了第一印象往往短暂易逝,教我们如何留下好印象,若初次印象不佳,也可以用更好的二次印象来弥补。
【12题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段“Making a first impression is like trying to keep a door open with your foot. Many encounters with strangers are short and quick and may never happen again. (留下第一印象,就好比用脚抵住一扇门不让它关上。与陌生人的许多相遇都短暂仓促,且或许此生不会再见。)”可知,第一印象是短暂且临时的。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“To avoid being forgotten, you need to do something memorable — but not something foolish. Make an impression by asking an insightful question or making someone laugh. (为了避免被遗忘,你需要做些令人难忘的事——但不要做傻事。通过提出一个有见地的问题或逗得别人发笑来留下印象。)”可知,作者建议靠展现见解或是幽默感来留下难忘的第一印象。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“But what if you messed up your first impression? And one day you see them looking at you, recalling the time you embarrassed yourself, and they’re walking toward you thinking, “I know you from somewhere ...” (但如果你的第一印象搞砸了呢?有一天,你看到他们正看着你,回想起自己曾经的尴尬时刻,而他们正朝你走来,心里想着:“我好像在哪儿见过你……”)和第五段“In that case, your second impression needs to be better. (既然如此,你需要打造一个更好的第二印象。)”可知,若是第一印象搞砸了,作者建议去营造更好的第二印象。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段“First impressions can be harsh. One mistake, and you might feel like you’ll forever be seen as an idiot in someone’s eyes. However, I believe reality is kinder than that. (第一印象可能很刻薄。一个错误,就可能让你觉得在别人眼里永远是个傻瓜。但我相信现实比这更宽容。)”及下文内容可知,文章讲述了第一印象并非全部,还有补救机会。由此可知,First Impressions Aren’t Everything (第一印象并不是一切)适合作本文最佳标题。

【答案】
Dear Chris,
Last week, I took a hands-on class on mortise and tenon joint structure, a Chinese technique that joins pieces of wood without nails or glue. I’m writing to share my unforgettable experience with you.
We first gathered in the craft room, where an elderly skilled carpenter explained how the wooden parts fit tightly together. Then, we tried cutting and shaping wooden pieces. After several failed attempts, my pieces finally clicked into place, forming a stable structure.
What impressed me most was the wisdom and craftsmanship spirit of ancient Chinese craftsmen. These precise designs gave me a deeper appreciation of Chinese cultural heritage.
Yours,
Li Hua

Grandpa Wang had been a calligraphy master in a small town for over sixty years. Every morning, he would set up his brush, ink, and rice paper on the old wooden table by the window, practicing characters stroke by stroke with steady hands. His grandson, Zhiyuan, now sixteen, had watched this routine countless times since childhood but had never shown interest in learning. “Too slow, too old-fashioned,” he would tell his friends, scrolling through his phone while Grandpa wrote.
One Saturday afternoon, Zhiyuan burst through the door, his face flushed with frustration. He threw his backpack on the floor and sank into the sofa. Grandpa Wang continued writing, his brush moving gracefully across the paper. After a long silence, he asked gently, “School not going well?”
Zhiyuan sighed heavily. “We have this school culture festival next month. Each class needs to present something about traditional Chinese culture. My classmates recommended me to organize our class performance because I’m ‘the Chinese kid’. But I don’t know anything! I can’t even write proper characters. Everyone expects me to be some kind of expert just because my grandparents are from China.”
Grandpa Wang put down his brush and looked at his grandson. For a moment, the room was silent except for the soft ticking of the old clock on the wall. Then Zhiyuan continued, his voice cracking, “I told them my grandpa is a calligraphy master. I don’t know why I said that. Maybe I wanted to sound impressive. Now they want me to do a calligraphy demonstration during the festival. Me! I can’t even hold a brush properly.”
Tears welled up in Zhiyuan’s eyes. He had always taken pride in being modern, fitting in with his friends, distancing himself from these “old traditions.” Now, for the first time, he felt ashamed — not of his heritage, but of his ignorance of it.

【答案】范文仅作参考
Noticing Zhiyuan, his grandpa asked him to sit at the table. “It’s never too late to learn”, said Grandpa while he placed the brush in his grandson’s trembling hand. “Hold it like this — firm but gentle,” he demonstrated. For hours, they sat together, the old man’s steady hand guiding the young one’s. Character after character, Zhiyuan felt something shift inside him. The strange strokes began to make sense. When he finally wrote “和” (harmony) on his own, Grandpa’s eyes sparkled with pride. Night after night, they practiced together. He stopped seeing calligraphy as old-fashioned and began feeling its quiet beauty, even kind of looking forward to the big day.
Finally came the culture festival day. Surrounded by curious schoolmates, Zhiyuan’s heart raced. But as he touched the brush, calm washed over him. Stroke by stroke, he wrote — characters flowing like water. Gasps turned into murmurs of admiration, then into applause. Looking up, he spotted Grandpa standing at the back, nodding with pride in his eyes. With a smile, deep faith welled up in Zhiyuan’s heart. This wasn’t just writing. It was a legacy passed down through generations. He was proud to carry it forward.
