Life is often compared to a journey, filled with twists and turns, highs and lows. This metaphor, while clichéd (老生常谈), holds a profound truth: the path we take is rarely straight, and the lessons we learn along the way shape who we become. I was reminded of this during a recent trip to the mountains, where the physical challenges of the hike mirrored the emotional and intellectual struggles I had been facing.
The trail was steep and tough, with sections that seemed almost insurmountable As I climbed, my legs burned, and my breath grew short. There were moments when I wanted to turn back, to retreat to the comfort of the familiar. But something inside me urged me to press on, to see what lay beyond the next bend. It was in these moments of doubt and exhaustion that I began to reflect on the nature of perseverance.
Perseverance, I realized, is not just about pushing through physical pain or mental exhaust. It is about maintaining a sense of purpose, even when the destination is unclear. It is about trusting that the effort we put in will eventually yield results, even if those results are not immediately visible. This lesson was not new to me, but experiencing it in such a real way brought it into sharper focus.
As I continued my climbing, I noticed how the landscape changed with each step. The dense forest gave way to open meadows, and the air grew cooler. The higher I climbed, the more expansive the view became. It was a powerful reminder that perspective is everything. What seems like an insurmountable obstacle from one point can appear entirely different from another. This shift in perspective can be transformative, allowing us to see challenges not as roadblocks but as opportunities for growth.
By the time I reached the summit, I was exhausted but excited. The view from the top was breathtaking, a reward for the effort it had taken to get there. But more than the view, it was the journey itself that left a lasting impression. The climb had taught me valuable lessons about resilience (适应力), perspective, and the importance of staying the course, even when the path is difficult.
Life, like the mountain trail, is full of challenges that test our limits and push us to grow. It is through these challenges that we discover our strength and resilience. And while the journey may be difficult, the lessons we learn and the perspectives we gain make it all worthwhile.
36. What is the main theme of the passage?
A. The physical challenges of hiking.
B. The importance of perseverance and perspective in life.
C. The beauty of mountain landscapes.
D. The rewards of reaching the summit.
37. What does the narrator realize about perseverance during the hike?
A. It is only about physical endurance.
B. It requires avoiding all obstacles.
C. It is unnecessary when the destination is clear.
D. It involves maintaining a sense of purpose and trusting the process.
38. How does the narrator’s perspective change during the climb?
A. He sees challenges as opportunities for growth.
B. He realizes the journey is not worth the effort.
C. He becomes more focused on the destination.
D. He decides to turn back and give up.
39. What does the narrator find most rewarding about reaching the summit?
A. The physical view from the top.
B. The lessons learned during the journey.
C. The opportunity to rest and relax.
D. The chance to take photographs.
40. What does the passage suggest about life’s challenges?
A. They should be avoided at all costs.
B. They are best faced with the help of others.

C
Lao Zi once said, “Care about what other people think and you will always be their prisoner.” People-pleasing, or seeking self-worth, through others’ approval, is unproductive and an exhausting way to go through life. Why do we allow what others think of us to have so much power over how we feel about ourselves? If it’s true that you can’t please all people all of the time, wouldn’t it make sense to stop trying?
Unfortunately, sense often isn’t driving our behavior. For social beings who desire love and belonging wanting to be liked, and caring about the effect we have on others, is healthy and allows us to make connections. However, where we get into trouble is when our self-worth is dependent upon whether we win someone’s approval or not.
This need to be liked can be traced back to when we were children and were completely dependent on others to take care of us: Small children are not just learning how to walk and communicate, they are also trying to learn how the world works. We learn about who we are and what is expected of us based on interactions with others, so, to a four-year-old, if Mommy or Daddy doesn’t like him or her, there is the danger that they will abandon them. We need to understand that when we desperately want someone to approve of us, it’s being driven by that little kid part of us that is still terrified of abandonment.
As you become more capable of providing yourself with the approval you seek, your need for external validation (认同) will start to disappear, leaving you stronger, more confident, and yes, happier in your life. Imaging how much time we lose every time we restrict our true selves in an effort to be liked.
If we base our worth on the opinions of others, we cheat ourselves of the power to shape our experiences and embrace life not only for others but also for ourselves because ultimately, there is no difference. So embrace the cliche (老话) and love yourself as it’s highly doubtful that you’ll regret it.
41. What can we conclude from Lao Zi’s quotation?
A. We should see through others’ attempt to make a prisoner of us
B. We can never be truly free if taking to heart others’ opinion of us.
C. We can never really please others even if we try as hard as we can.
D. We should care about others’ view as much as they care about our own.
42. What will happen if we base our self-worth on other people’s approval?
A. Our desire to be loved will be fulfilled.
B. Our life will be unfruitful and exhausting.
C. Our identity as social beings will be affected.
D. Our sense of self will be sharpened and enhanced.
43. What may account for our need to be liked or approved of?
A. Our desperate longing for interactions with others.
B. Our understanding of the workings of the world.
C. Our knowledge about the pain of abandonment.
D. Our early childhood fear of being deserted.
44. What can we do when we become better able to provide ourselves with the desired approval?
A. Enjoy a happier life. B. Exercise self-restriction.
C. Receive more external validation. D. Strengthen our power of imagination.
45. What does the author advise us to do in the last paragraph?
A. Embrace life for ourselves and for others.
B. Base our worth on others’ opinions.
C. See our experiences as resources.
D. Love ourselves as we are.
B 42. B 43. D 44. A 45. D

根据第一段中“People-pleasing, or seeking self- worth through others’ approval, is unproductive and an exhausting way to go through life. (取悦他人,或通过他人的认可来寻求自我价值,是一种无成效且疲惫的生活方式。)”可知,如果我们将自我价值建立在别人的认可上,那么我们的生活就会变得无成效且疲惫不堪。故选B。
【43题详解】
推理判断题,根据第三段中“We need to understand that when we desperately want someone to approve of us, it’s being driven by that little kid part of us that is still terrified of abandonment. (我们需要明白,当我们迫切地想要别人认可我们的时候,这是由我们内心深处那个害怕被抛弃的小孩所驱使的。)”可知,我们渴望被喜欢或认可的原因是我们小时候害怕被抛弃。故选D。
【44题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段中“As you become more capable of providing yourself with the approval you seek, your need for external validation will start to disappear, leaving you stronger, more confident, and yes, happier in your life. (当你变得更有能力为自己提供你所寻求的认可时,你对外界认可的需求就会消失,让你变得更强大,更自信,是的,更快乐。)”可知,当我们能够自己给自己提供所需的认可时,我们更能享受生活。故选A。
推理判断题,根据最后一段中“So embrace the cliche and love yourself as it’s highly doubtful that you’ll regret it. (所以接受这句老话:爱你自己,因为你不会后悔的。)”可推知,作者在最后一段建议我们要接受并爱我们自己,不要总是依赖他人的看法来定义自己的价值。故选D。

第四部分 写作(共两节,满分25分)
第一节:阅读表达(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
阅读下列短文并回答问题。
Thanksgiving Day was near, and the first grade teacher gave her class a fun assignment—to draw a picture of something for which they were thankful. Most of the class might be considered not very well-off, but still many would celebrate the holiday with turkey and other traditional treats of the season. These, the teacher thought, would be the subjects of most of her students’ art. And they were.
But Douglas made a different kind of picture. Douglas was a different kind of boy. He was the teacher’s true child of sadness, weak and melancholic. As other children played during break time, Douglas was likely to stand close by her side. One could only guess at the pain Douglas felt behind those sad eyes.
Yes, his picture was different. When asked to draw a picture of something for which he was thankful, he drew a hand. Nothing else. Just an empty hand.
His abstract image captured the imagination of his peers. Whose hand could it be? One child guessed it was the hand of a farmer, because farmers raise turkeys. Another suggested a police officer, because the police protect and care for people. And so the discussion went—until the teacher almost forgot the young artist himself.
When the children had gone on to other assignments, she paused at Douglas’ desk, bent down, and asked him whose hand it was. The little boy looked away and said softly, “It’s yours, teacher.”
She recalled the times she had taken his hand and walked with him here or there, as she had the other students. How often had she said, “Take my hand, Douglas, we’ll go outside.” Or, “Let me show you how to hold your pencil.” Or, “Let’s do this together.” Douglas was most thankful for his teacher’s hand.
Brushing aside a tear, she went on with her work.
In fact, people might not always say “thanks,” but they’ll remember the hand that reaches out.
46. What did the teacher expect her students to draw? (no more than 10 words)
_____________________________________________________________
47. What does the underlined word “melancholic” mean in Paragraph 2? (One word)
_____________________________________________________________
48. What did Douglas’s classmates guess about the hand he drew? (no more than 15 words)
_____________________________________________________________
49. Why did Douglas choose to draw his teacher’s hand? (no more than 10 words)
_____________________________________________________________
50. Who do you most want to thank and why? (no more than 20 words)
_____________________________________________________________
46. Turkey and other traditional treats of the season.
47. Sad/Sorrowful/Unhappy/Depressed.
48. They guessed it could be the hand of a farmer or a police officer.
49. Because he was thankful for her support and care.
50. I most want to thank my family for their unconditional love and support in every step of my journey.

根据文章第一段“Most of the class might be considered not very well-off, but still many would celebrate the holiday with turkey and other traditional treats of the season. These, the teacher thought, would be the subjects of most of her students’ art.(这个班级的大多数人可能被认为不是很富裕,但仍然有许多人会用火鸡和其他传统的食物来庆祝这个节日。这位老师认为,这些将是她大多数学生的艺术主题。)”可知,老师预料她的学生画火鸡和其他节日的传统美食。故回答为Turkey and other traditional treats of the season.
根据下文“As other children played during break time, Douglas was likely to stand close by her side. One could only guess at the pain Douglas felt behind those sad eyes.(当其他孩子在休息时间玩耍时,道格拉斯很可能站在她身边。人们只能猜测道格拉斯在那双悲伤的眼睛后面所感受到的痛苦。)”可知,道格拉斯是一个悲伤的孩子,所以猜测划线词的意思是“悲伤的、抑郁的”。故回答为Sad/ Sorrowful/ Unhappy/ Depressed.
根据文章第四段“One child guessed it was the hand of a farmer, because farmers raise turkeys. Another suggested a police officer, because the police protect and care for people.(一个孩子猜测这是一个农民的手,因为农民养火鸡。另一个建议当警察,因为警察保护和关心人民。)”可知,道格拉斯的同学对他画的那只手猜测可能是一个农民或警察的手。故回答为They guessed it could be the hand of a farmer or a police officer.
根据文章第六段“Douglas was most thankful for his teacher’s hand.(道格拉斯非常感谢老师的帮助。)” Because he was thankful for her support and care.
I most want to thank my family for their unconditional love and support in every step of my journey.

I’m glad to hear that you are going to take part in the school green campus design competition. I’d like to offer you some practical suggestions.
Personally, I strongly recommend you design a school small ecological garden as your entry. This creative project is perfectly suited for your competition and has many advantages.
To begin with, a campus ecological garden can greatly improve the school environment. With various plants and flowers, it can freshen the air and reduce heat, creating a comfortable and eco-friendly studying atmosphere for students. Besides, it serves as a vivid outdoor classroom. Students can observe different plants and small creatures closely, which helps deepen their understanding of ecological protection and raises their awareness of respecting nature.
If you need more detailed design plans or creative ideas to polish your project, feel free to let me know. I’m always ready to help.
Wish your project a great success!
Yours,
Li Jin
