Schools stop providing sweet snacks and make sure students get at least one hour of physical activity each day. Families are also encouraged to record their health conditions regularly. Second, many cities have built sports parks to make it easier for people to work out. Third, hospitals have set up special weight management clinics (诊室) to offer people advice on meals and exercise.

Looking back at my diary written four years ago, an unhappy memory comes into my mind from time to time. I still remember the 61 experience of failing to make the school basketball team. I had dreamed of being a team member 62 childhood and spent nearly all my spare time practicing basketball every weekend. I even got up early to run every morning, trying 63 my physical strength, hoping to reach the coach’s strict standards. However, the coach turned me down because of my short height. I was so disappointed that I refused to join in any outdoor activities and shut 64 in my bedroom for several days.
My best friend noticed my disappointment. He spoke to me in a 65 voice and encouraged me to take up swimming to calm myself down. He stayed beside me to cheer me up whenever I felt upset. At first, I had no interest in swimming and just wanted to run away from my bad feelings. 66 , I gradually fell in love with the sport. Every training in the water helped me build up confidence day by day. I kept strict training for months, and later got the chance to take part in city-level swimming competitions. I put all my 67 into every race and tried my best in each match. Up to now, I 68 three medals in swimming competitions during the past two years.

Do you know in different cultures around the world, the same animal can carry totally different meanings. 71
In almost all English-speaking countries, the lion is the star of the animal world! People call it “the king of all animals” and connect it with brave, powerful heroes. 72 But guess what? In China, it’s the tiger that holds this title of “king of bravery”! That’s why when we put the English saying “play oneself in the lion’s mouth” into Chinese, we use “tiger” instead — it becomes “zhi shen hu xue”.
Now let’s talk about owls then! In western countries, the owl is the “wise guy” of the bird world. 73 You might even hear them say “as wise as an owl” to praise someone! But in old Chinese stories, hearing an owl’s sound was seen as a bad sign. Maybe people don’t take it too seriously today, but this fun difference still remains!
74 Learning about them helps us avoid silly misunderstandings, and it also helps us understand local cultures better. That’s why paying attention to cultural differences is such a big deal. 75 So small cultural differences really bring us a richer world.
A. Here are two super interesting examples!
B. They let us enjoy lots of fun from different stories.
C. Its cleverness is something westerners really respect.
D. The UK even uses the lion as a symbol of its country.
E. These animal symbols aren’t just fun facts — they matter!
F. It makes talking to people from other countries much easier and more fun!

You probably remember the Flaming Mountains in Journey to the West. But do you know where the real Flaming Mountains are? They are in Turpan, in the east of Xinjiang.
It’s one of the hottest and driest areas in the world. In the middle of summer, the desert sand can reach 80℃, hot enough to burn your feet and even cook an egg. Rainfall in Turpan is only 16 mm a year. These sound crazy, right? How do people survive in such a terrible climate? The secret lies in the ancient karez system.
Turpan has over 1,000 wells (井) and some are 100 meters deep. Under these wells are large underground canals (地下暗道). Water from the mountains falls into the wells. It then runs underground in the canals. It is kept cool and safe from the desert heat. The total length of these canals is more than 5.000kilometres, almost as long as the Yellow River. Built completely by hand, this amazing water system fully reflects how wise the ancient Chinese people were. It is a perfect example of how ancient people used their intelligence to make good use of nature, helping locals grow plants and live well in the hard land.
Now Turpan faces water shortage because of reduced mountain water, less rainfall and rising water use. Though modern technology helps a lot, the karez system still matters greatly. More young people are working to protect it, so this old water system will pass down to our kids in the future.

Who doesn’t love a good laugh? Almost everyone loves funny stories and relaxing jokes. Mark Twain is one of the most famous and popular American storytellers. His words not only bring people lots of fun but also warm people’s hearts and make people think deeply about life.

He lived through a special time when America developed quickly. Life became quite different from the old days, and many social habits and lifestyles changed greatly. Instead of writing serious boring articles, Mark Twain chose humor to tell true life stories. He believed laughter could help people understand life better. As he said, “Against the strength of laughter nothing can stand.”
His famous book Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is loved by readers all over the world. It tells the moving trip of a free young boy Huck and his good friend Jim. They travelled together, helped each other and built true friendship. The book also tells warm stories about kindness and friendship.
Mark Twain also made great changes to American writing. Before him, many writers used difficult, old-fashioned British sentences. Mark Twain used simple, natural everyday language just like people speak in life. His easy and lively writing style won lots of fans. Even great writer Ernest Hemingway said his works influenced all modern American novels.

Hello, everyone! For me, happiness comes from small things.
First, reading brings me joy. When I read books, I can travel to different worlds, which always makes me relaxed. Second, helping others cheers me up. For example, I often help old people cross streets. Seeing their smiles gives me a sense of achievement. Besides, doing sports also makes me happy, because it keeps me healthy and brings much fun.
In a word, true happiness lies in the warm moments we create and feel every day.
