Seeing Jean's condition, the man jumped out to help. His wife quickly took out a blanket and
covered Jean, and then they lifted Jean into the back seat carefully. The husband turned on the
heater to keep her warm and rushed her to the nearest hospital. Thanks to their help,Jean received
timely medical treatment, which saved her life.Once Jean recovered, she managed to get the
couple's address, bringing a heartfelt gift and a handwritten letter to express her deepest
gratitude to the family for their life-saving deed. The man and his wife smiled and said they only did
what anyone else would do.This unforgettable experience made Jean realize kindness is a light in
the darkest moment, and that it is strangers that become lifesavers when we need them most.

A man sat at a metro station in Washington D.C.and started to play the violin;it was a cold January
morning. He played six pieces for about 45 mmnutes.During that time, since it was rush hour,1,100 people
went through the station, most of them on their way to work.
Three minutes wont by.and a middlc-aged man noticed there was musician playing.A few minutes later,
someone ieaned against the wall to listen to him. They stopped for a few seconds, and then hurried up to
meet their schedule.
The one who paid the most attention was a 3-year-old boy.His mother followed him along, hutried, but
the kid stopped to look at the violinist. Finally, the mother pushed hard, and the child continued to walk,
turning his head all the time. This was repeated by several other children. All the parents, without exception,
forced them to move on.
In the 45 minutes the musician played, only 6 people stopped and stayed for a while.About 20 gave him
money, but continued to walk their normal pace.He collected $32.When he finished playing and silence
took over,no one noticed it.No one applauded )nor was there any recognition.
No one knew this, but the violinist was Joshua Bell, one of the most talented musicians in the world. He
had just played one of the most-beautiful pieces ever written,on a violin worth 3.5 million dollars.
Two days before his playing in the subway,Joshua Bell sold out at a theatre in Boston where the seats
averaged $100.
This is a real story.Joshua Bell's playing in the metro station was organized by the Washington Post as
part of a social experiment.
One of the possible conclusions from this experience could be:if we do not have a moment to stop and
listen to one of the best musicians in the world playing the best music ever written, how many other things
are we missing?

Ants have the ability to smell cancerous cells in humans,a new study has discovered, suggesting they
could be used for cancer diagnosis in future.Researchers from the French National Centre for Scientific
Research(CNRS)discovered that ant species Formica fusca has a well developed sense of smell. It was able
to differentiate (cancerous cells from heaithy celis in humans, thanks to their sense of smell, limited
trials revealed.
To conduct their research, the scientists performed tests with 36 ants, smelling cells-under a laboratory
setting.First, the specialists exposed the ants to the smell of a sample of cancerous human cells. This smell
was then associated with a reward of sugar solution. In a second step, the researchers exposed the ants to
two different smells. One was a new smell and the second was the smell of the cancerous cells.Once this
test was successful, the researchers exposed the ants to different cancerous cells.
As such, the scientists found that ants discriminate between cancerous and healthy cells and between
two cancerous lines. After training,Formica fusca ants are able to detect volatile organic compounds given
off by cancerous cells. This first study shows that ants have high potential, are capable of learning very
quickly,at lower cost, and are efficient,CNRS points out in a news release.
This isn't the first time that scientists have used the animal sense of smell to locate cancerous cells.
"Dogs'noses are well suited for medical diagnosis. However, traiming them to do so requires several months
to a year.Ants therefore represent a fast, efficient, inexpensive, and highly diseriminant detection tool for
detection of cancer cell volatiles,"the team explained,"our approach could potentially be adapted to a range
of other complex smell detection tasks including the detection of narcotics, explosives, spoiled food,or
other diseases.”
But more clinical tests must be carried out before they could be used in clinical settings like hospitals,
the team said. They suggest that in future.ants could turn out to be better than dogs when it comes to
locating cancerous celis in humans.Who knows?Let's wait and see.
28.How does the author introduce the topic of ants'potential use in cancer diagnosis?
A.By comparing ants to dogs.
B.By presenting the results of a new study.
C.By describing the training process of ants.
D.By discussing the history of cancer diagnosis.
29.What does paragraph 2 mainly talk about?
A.The process of the research.
B.The reason of the research.
C.The limitation of the research.
D.The conclusion of the research.
30.What can we infer about the use of ants in cancer diagnosis?
A.Ants have already been used in clinical settings.
B.By presenting the results of a new study.
C.Ants may become a cost-effective diagnostic tool.
D.Ants will replace dogs in cancer detection entirely.
31.What is the author's attitude towards the use of ants in cancer diagnosis?
A.Doubtfui.
B.Negative.
C.Objective.
D.Indifferent.

The new stretchy electronic skin, developed by researchers at The University of Texas at
Austin, solves a:major bottleneck in the emerging technology.Existing e-skin technology loses sensing
aecuracy(传感精度)as the material stretches(拉伸),but that is not the ease with this new version.
E-skin technology senses pressure from contact, letting the attached machine know how much foree to
use to,for example,grab a cup or touch a person.But,when traditional e-skin is stretched,it also senses that
deformation. That reading creates additional noise that skews the sensors'ability to sense the
pressure. That could lead to a robot using too much force to grab something.
"As human skin has to stretch and bend to accommodate our movements,so too does e-skin,"said
Nanshu Lu,a professor in the Cockrell School of Engineering who led the project."No matter how much
our e-skin stretches,the pressure response doesn't change,and that is a significant achievement."Lu
envisages the stretchy e-skin as a key component to a robot hand capable of the same level of softness and
sensitivity (in touch as a human hand. This could be applied to medical care, where robots could
check a patient's pulsc,wipe a body or massage a body part.
Why is a robot nurse or physical therapist necessary?Around the world, millions of people are aging
and are in need of care, more than the global medical system can provide."In the future,if we have more
elderly people than available caregivers,it's going to be a crisis worldwide,"Lu said."We need to find new

ways to take care of people efficiently and also gently, and robots are an important piece of that puzzle."
Beyond medicine,human-caring robots could be deployed in disasters. They could search for injured and
trapped people in an earthquake or a collapsed building, for example, and apply on-the-spot care, such as
administering CPR(心肺复苏术).
32.What's the problem of the traditional e-skin?
A.Poor control of force.
B.Low levels of softness.
C.Misjudgments of distance.
D.Loud noise of the machine.
33.What does the underlined word "enyisages"in the third paragraph mean?
A.Imagines.
B.Monitors.
C.Improves.
D.Tests.
34.What makes Lu think robot caregivers necessary?
A.The high turnover of medical staff.
B.The ageing of the population.
C.Their high quality of care.
D.Their low operating costs.
35.Which can be the best title for the text?
A.Human skin has higher touch sensitivity than e-skin
B.Robots need e-skin with higher touch sensitivity.
C.Strctchy e-skin gives robots human-level touch sensitivity.
D.Stretchy e-skin improves the efficiency of medical systems.

Getting into the right mindset for serious studying can be difficult. With roommates or family, incoming
messages, the Internet and a million other distractions,it's easy to lose focus.Use these tips to make a quiet
place perfect for concentration.
Create your quiet space
Reading and memorizing require focus,so it's important to create a quiet space. You can use earplugs
or download a white noise app on your phone.36.Turn your phone on airplane mode so that texts
and calls can't distract you.For Internet distractions, consider downloading an app that can help with
productivity. These apps will block access to the Internet for a certain period of time to keep you on-track
and away from social media.37
38
Another easy way to get distracted(分散注意力)from your study plan is realizing you need something
that you forgot outside your study space. If you're doing work or reading on a laptop, make sure to bring
your charger because a failing battery can be distracting and may force you to stop studying before you've
finished.Be sure to have all of the pens, highlighters, notebooks and textbooks you will need to complete
your work.39.Having everything you need within reach will keep you focused as you work
through your assignments.
Find the right atmosphere
40.Thus,making sure the environment is best for you is important.Students with worksheets,
equations and practice problems would probably do better with a desk or a large table,so they can spread
out and access all of their materials at the same time.Students with lots of reading may be more comfortable
on a sofa or chair where they can settle in and get comfortable while they study.
A.Bring the esscntials
B.Pack your forgotten things
C.Different students adopt different attitudes
D.Not everyone has the same study style or tasks
E.Getting up and interrupting your thought can make it hard to focus
F.Silencing your phone and avoiding online distractions are also crucial
G.Creating the right mental atmosphere sets you up for a successful study session

Standing at the highest point for miles around,Jean was at great risk of being hit by lightning.
She gave up the original plan of going back along the fixed trail()and ehose to climb down the
