Would you like to make more friends and be a better person in high school? Here is some advice for you to be such a person of good character (性格).

Finally, caring means treating others with understanding. Caring people are kind and they care about the feelings of others. Try to help others when you can. Change your ways of helping others.

On a basketball court, Memettursunjan Erkin quickly ran past his opponent (对手), turned around, and threw a perfect pass to his teammate. Small in size, he didn’t stand out at first glance—until someone noticed his prosthetic (假体的) leg.
Born in 2013 in Xinjiang, China, Memettursunjan came into the world missing part of his right leg. As a child, he often stood by the window, watching other children run and play. “Walking with a prosthetic leg was difficult, so I usually stayed at home,” he explained.
Everything changed when Memettursunjan was six. He watched a video of NBA star Stephen Curry, who wasn’t the tallest or the strongest player, but was fearless and skillful. The video deeply inspired him.
However, the basketball court was ruthless (无情的). “I couldn’t beat anyone.” Memettursunjan recalled. “I even thought about giving up.” But he didn’t. “I cried at night, but the next morning, I told myself, real men don’t quit.”
He hung a simple basketball hoop (篮球筐) on a tree outside his home and practiced for hours every day. He learned to play smarter: if he couldn’t run faster than others, he could focus on improving his skills; if he couldn’t jump high, he could pass the ball extremely well.
His hard work paid off. He got into the school team—not because of others’ pity for him, but because of his perseverance (坚持) and skill.
Now, Memettursunjan has found not only confidence but also friendship. “Basketball gives me something more than a game,” he said. “It has helped me find myself.”
1.How did the writer start the passage?

4.What was the key to his improvement?

On a freezing December day in Tongxin County, Ningxia, the quiet winter air was suddenly broken by screams—a 4-year-old boy had fallen through the ice into the icy lake! People rushed to the edge, hearts sinking, but no one dared step onto the cracking surface. At that critical moment, 13-year-old Li Jiating, a seventh-grade student, stepped forward bravely. “I’m light—I’ll go!” she said. She took a long pipe handed to her by a bystander (旁观者) and crawled carefully toward the ice hole. As she reached out to give the pipe to the boy, the ice broke again. Both she and the boy fell into the freezing water.
But Li Jiating didn’t let go. She held tightly onto the pipe until adults on the shore pulled her out. Soon after, firefighters arrived and rescued the boy. Soaked (浸湿) and shivering, Li Jiating quietly rode her bike home without saying a word.
Her father asked about her wet clothes, and she smiled and “lied”: “A water truck splashed (泼洒) me!” It wasn’t until 11 that night, when her father’s sister called, that the father learned the truth. “I’m scared and sad, but also proud of her kindness,” he said.

“Five minutes left!” announced (宣布) Ms. Parker. The whole class was working on their math test.
Suddenly, the fire alarm went off. Everyone jumped up, looking at Ms. Parker. “Stay calm. Leave everything and line up at the door,” Ms. Parker said calmly.
As they walked outside, Daniel said to his friend Mike in a low voice, “I hadn’t finished question 10 yet. I was so close!” “Me too! I only had two questions left,” Mike replied worriedly.
They stood on the playground for twenty minutes. Finally, the headmaster announced, “False alarm (误报). Please go back to class.”
Back to the classroom, Ms. Parker looked at the test papers on the desks. “Well, this is unusual,” she said. “Here’s what we’ll do. If you haven’t finished, you can have five more minutes. Those who have already finished may hand in their papers now.”
“Wait,” said Sarah, raising her hand. She had already finished before the alarm. “________”
Everyone turned to look at her. “Why not?” asked Ms. Parker, truly interested. “I finished on time, so I don’t get those five minutes. But the students who didn’t finish get extra (额外的) time? That doesn’t seem right,” Sarah said. “If they get more time to finish their tests, we should get more time to check our answers.”
The classroom went quiet. Ms. Parker thought for a moment, then nodded. “You’re right, Sarah. Fairness means everyone gets the same chance. If some get extra time, all should get extra time.”
She looked around the classroom. “So here’s my new decision. Everyone gets five more minutes. Use the time to finish or to check your work.” Daniel’s face lit up. “Great!” But then Ms. Parker added, “However, I want you to think about something. Sarah could have kept quiet. 1.文中提到Daniel对Mike说“I hadn’t finished question 10 yet. I was so close!”,Mike也回应“I only had two questions left!”,这直接说明两人当时都还有题目没答完。
2.Ms. Parker最初的决定是“If you haven’t finished, you can have five more minutes.”,Daniel和Mike都是没做完题的学生,这个决定对他们来说是有利的,因此他们会感到感激(Thankful)。
3.后文Sarah说的内容是“I finished on time, so I don’t get those five minutes. But the students who didn’t finish get extra time? That doesn’t seem right.”,这是她在提出“不公平”的观点,因此横线处最适合填“That’s not fair.”。
4.Sarah已经完成了考试,却依然勇敢地为公平发声,指出老师决定的问题,她的行为体现了勇敢(Brave)和诚实(Honest)的品质。
5.老师最后评价Sarah时说“Sarah could have kept quiet. She could have let you get extra time while she got nothing. But she spoke up for fairness—for everyone, not just for herself.”,点明了故事的主旨:我们要为他人着想,而不只是为自己。

On a crisp autumn afternoon last October, as Zhang was rushing to school after picking up reference books at the city library, he noticed an elderly woman standing hesitantly at a busy crossroads. The old woman, who carried a heavy woven basket filled with vegetables, appeared disoriented (迷失方向的) by the chaotic traffic and the newly installed pedestrian signals.

Every year before the Qingming Festival, thousands of students and teachers from Guyuan No.2 Middle School and Hongwen Middle School in Ningxia start a special hiking trip. On a freezing December day in Tongxin County, Ningxia, the quiet winter air was suddenly broken by screams—a 4-year-old boy had fallen through the ice into the icy lake! People rushed to the edge, hearts sinking, but no one dared step onto the cracking surface.
She could have let you get extra time while she got nothing. But she spoke up for fairness—for everyone, not just for herself.”
“Okay, five minutes start now,” Ms. Parker said. “Use them well.”
