A job well done is described as a “masterpiece” or “work of art.” Healthy people are described as “the picture” of health. Even moods are associated with colors of the artist’s palette. What is it about art that makes it so much a part of our daily lives? It’s clear that art is far more than just something we see in galleries or museums — it is a necessary part of daily communication and expression. Many people may wonder what the world of art is really like. To help you feel its charm, just imagine a land so vast that it has no boundaries. Imagine a place so varied that every step you take brings a new adventure. It is the world of art. Art is visual work that communicates an idea, expresses a feeling, or presents an interesting design. In the world of art, the only limits are those of the imagination. The only boundaries are those of creativity and skill. Given that art has such infinite possibilities and profound influence, it naturally develops into a wide range of professional fields. Artists work in many different fields like publishing, technology, entertainment, and advertising. The work that artists create can range from illustrations to jewelry to buildings. Below is a list of some art careers that you might consider: ● Fine artist. A professional fine artist creates works such as paintings and sculptures. Sometimes, fine artists earn commissions to create works for individuals, businesses, the government, or other organizations. ● Graphic designer. Books, magazines, and advertisements are just a few of the projects that require graphic designers. Some graphic designers specialize in computer graphics. They may work in computer animation or design Web sites. ● Architect. These artists design buildings. They may design any structure from homes to skyscrapers to museums. ● Industrial designer. These artists design products for specific industries. Some examples include toys, furniture, appliances, and cars. ● Art teacher. Becoming an art teacher provides the opportunity to share your knowledge of and appreciation for art with others. Art teachers may work in schools, museums, or community centers. 31. How does the author introduce the topic in the first paragraph? A. By listing art-related daily expressions. B. By explaining the history of art expressions. C. To compare art with other visual works. B. To explain the technical skills required for art. C. To show that art is limited to professional artists. D. Art has given rise to a wide variety of professional careers. C. Artworks are limited to artistic creation with practical values. D. Artists prefer to create large buildings rather than small items. 34. Which of the following artists is most likely to design a new type of bicycle? A. A fine artist. B. An architect. C. An industrial designer. D. A graphic designer. 35. What is the main purpose of the passage? A. To introduce the origin of art expressions. B. To explain why art is a universal language. C. You will always be a scientist.” Those were the words spoken by my mentor, Professor Jenny Martin, as I told her my thoughts and feelings on leaving the bench to follow a career in science writing. My passion for science dates back to high school. In my final years of high school, I had worked out which subjects I liked best — I chose three science subjects and two maths subjects. I loved that there was always the “right answer” in science. So I applied for an undergraduate science degree. In my third year, I sat down to a lecture given by Professor Jenny Martin. Her research sounded like a cool mix of computational work and working at the lab bench. It was then that I had my aha moment. A research career! However, about ten years later, things started to change. My research career was going pretty well, but I wasn’t happy. I enjoyed reading and writing about science, but failed experiment after failed experiment was getting me down. I knew clearly I had to do something. Upon voicing my frustrations to a coworker in New Zealand, she suggested medical writing. She knew someone who had felt the same way as me, and who now works from home as a medical writer. It sounded perfect: I would be able to use my science background, but step out of the lab and have some control. I excitedly started applying for jobs. My heart was saying yes! Through a chance meeting with the communications manager, volunteering for a while, and having perseverance, I finally got a job in my university’s communications department. Here, I tried my hand at all types of writing: from media releases to annual reports. I am still engaged with science, but finally feel I am doing something I am good at. And Jenny is right; I will forever be a scientist — just one who has found a slightly different niche What inspired the author to follow a research career? A. Her high school science classes. B. A lecture by Professor Jenny Martin. C. Her love for having “right answers”. D. The desire to explore computational work. 37. What is the main idea of paragraph 4? A. How the author’s research career succeeded. B. Why the author decided to change her career. C. What the author thought about her coworkers. D. How the author learned about medical writing. 38. How did the author finally get the job in her university’s communications department? A. By applying for jobs excitedly. B. By getting a recommendation from a coworker. C. By working as a volunteer and never giving up. D. By meeting the communications manager by chance. 39. What does the author say about her current career? A. It’s a good fit for her. B. It’s challenging but interesting. C. It’s more important than research. D. It’s better paid than a research job. 40. What does the author think of Jenny Martin’s words? A. They are just a comfort for her. B. They are too strange to understand. C. They turn out to be completely right. D. They let her consider various careers. 36. B 37. B 38. C 39. A 40. She knew someone who had felt the same way as me, and who now works from home as a medical writer.(然而,大约十年后,情况开始发生转变。 根据第六段中的“Through a chance meeting with the communications manager, volunteering for a while, and having perseverance, I finally got a job in my university’s communications department.(通过偶然结识传播部门经理、一段时间的志愿服务,再加上坚持不懈的努力,我最终获得了本校传播部门的工作)”可知,作者通过从事志愿工作并坚持不懈,最终得到了这份工作。 根据第六段中的“I am still engaged with science, but finally feel I am doing something I am good at.(我依然和科学领域紧密相关,并且终于感觉自己在做擅长的事情)”可知,作者认为自己目前的职业十分适合自己。 根据最后一段中的“And Jenny is right; I will forever be a scientist — just one who has found a slightly different niche.(而且珍妮是对的;我永远都是一名科学家,只是找到了一个略有不同的适合自己的岗位)”可推知,作者认为珍妮·马丁的话被证明是完全正确的。 C Eight in 10 homes that are at high risk of flooding in England are now in towns and cities, according to new analysis by the National Housing Federation (NHF) Research found that 839,000 homes in urban areas are now classed at high risk of surface water flooding, a threefold increase since 2018. Alistair Smyth, the director of policy and research at the NHF, said: “With surface water flooding a fast-growing threat in towns and cities, this poses a direct risk to people and families living in social housing.” “Our climate is changing faster than our infrastructure (基础设施) can handle and social housing residents are more exposed, less protected and least able to absorb the financial shock when floods hit. While housing associations operating in higher-risk areas are investing significant time and resources into protecting residents, this is a national risk that needs a national response.” he added. According to the Environment Agency (EA), a home is considered to be “high risk” when it has at least a one in 30 chance of being flooded each year. Extreme rainfall, ageing infrastructure and rapid urbanization are all making the problem worse. Chief executive of National Flood Forum Charity, Tracy Garrett said, “Every week we hear from people whose homes have been inundated with dirty water, often containing sewage (污水), and many have been flooded multiple times,” adding that there was a growing concern that those in rented or social housing and on lower incomes were hit hardest. They had “the least ability to adapt or protect their homes”, she said. “Many are experiencing repeated flooding, with little clarity on who is responsible for fixing the problem or how long-term solutions will be delivered.” Paul Warburton, group director of housing services at Torus housing association, which owns Hoyles’s home, said they spent £500,000 dealing with that one flood, only a few years after one in the same area. “Half a million pounds — that’s a lot of new bathrooms we could have installed, new homes we could’ve built,” he said, adding: “If this keeps happening we’re probably going to end up with about 100 properties (房产) that no one wants to live in, and then what do we do with them?” 41. According to Alistair Smyth, why is surface water flooding a national risk that needs a national response? A. Because infrastructure is changing faster than the climate. B. Because climate change is slowing down with government intervention. C. Because housing associations have refused to invest in flood protection. D. Because social housing residents are the least able to afford the cost of floods. 42. According to the Environment Agency (EA), when is a home considered to be at “high risk” of flooding? A. When it is located in an area with extreme rainfall. B. When it has been flooded at least once in the past year. C. When it has at least a 1 in 30 chance of being flooded each year. D. When it is built on aging infrastructure without proper protection. 43. What does the underlined word “inundated” in paragraph 5 most likely mean? A. flooded B. washed C. covered D. repaired 44. What can be inferred from Paul Warburton’s words in the last paragraph? A. Residents are fully responsible for protecting their homes from floods. B. Repeated flooding may make some properties unlivable and unsellable. C. The flood damage cost was relatively small compared to their annual budget. D. Housing associations prefer to build new homes rather than repair flooded ones. 45. What is the best title for the passage? A. The Climate Change in the United Kingdom. B. The Rapid Growth of Social Housing in English Cities. C. The Solution of Housing Associations to Flood Problems. D. The Increasing Flood Risk to Homes in England and its Impact. D 42. C 43. A 44. B 45. 根据第三段中的“Our climate is changing faster than our infrastructure can handle and social housing residents are more exposed, less protected and least able to absorb the financial shock when floods hit.(气候变化的速度超出了基础设施的承受能力,保障性住房居民面临的风险更高、得到的防护更少,洪水来袭时也最无力承担经济损失)”可知,保障性住房居民最难以承担洪水造成的经济损失,因此地表洪水是需要国家层面应对的全国性风险。 根据第四段中的“According to the Environment Agency (EA), a home is considered to be “high risk” when it has at least a one in 30 chance of being flooded each year.(根据英国环境署(EA)的标准,当一处住宅每年至少有三十分之一的概率遭遇洪水侵袭时,该住宅就会被划定为洪水“高风险”房屋)”可知,房屋每年至少有1/30的洪水发生概率时,会被认定为洪水高风险房屋。 根据第五段画线词“inundated”之后的“often containing sewage, and many have been flooded multiple times(常常混杂污水,且许多住宅已多次遭遇洪水)”可知,have been flooded指“被洪水淹没”,可推断inundated的含义与flooded一致。 根据最后一段中的“If this keeps happening we’re probably going to end up with about 100 properties that no one wants to live in, and then what do we do with them?(如果洪水持续频发,最终会有约 100 处房产无人愿意居住,我们该如何处置这些房屋)”可推知,反复发生的洪水可能会导致部分房产失去居住价值,无人愿意入住。 第一段“Eight in 10 homes that are at high risk of flooding in England are now in towns and cities, according to new analysis by the National Housing Federation (NHF). Research found that 839,000 homes in urban areas are now classed at high risk of surface water flooding, a threefold increase since 2018.(英国国家房屋协会的最新分析显示,英格兰十分之八的洪水高风险住宅都位于城镇。 非选择题(满分25分) 第四部分:写作(共两节,满分25分) 第一节:阅读表达(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) When I was a kid about twelve years old, I was already as tall as I am now, and I had a lot of freckles (雀斑). I had reached the age when I had begun to look at myself in the mirror, and I felt down. I had a cousin who had a flawless peaches-and-cream skin. I couldn’t help comparing myself with her and thinking that my life would be different if I had beautiful skin too — skin that was all one color. And then, I found an advertisement for freckle-remover cream. I knew that I could afford it if I saved my money, and I did. Finally, my package came. I was sure that I was looking at a miracle. I spread the cream all over my body. However, instead of developing a peaches-and-cream skin, I just got more and darker freckles. When I saw myself in the mirror, I burst into tears and hid in the bathroom. My mother called me to the dinner table, but I ignored her. I was still crying when my grandfather came to see what was wrong with me. I tried to explain why I didn’t want to have freckles and why I felt so inadequate when I compared my appearance with my cousin. He looked at me in great surprise, shook his head, and said,” But child, there are all kinds of flowers, and they are all beautiful.” I said, “I’ve never seen a flower with freckles!” and ran back to my room, banging the door. When my mother came and knocked, I told her to go away. She started to say the kinds of things that parents say at times like that, but my grandfather said,” Nancy, leave the child alone.” She was a grown-up, but he was her father. So mum left me alone. I don’t know where Grandpa found it. It isn’t at all common in the mountains where we lived then. But I know he put it in my room because my mother told me later. I had cried myself to sleep that night, and when I opened my swollen, sticky eyes the next morning, the first thing I saw, lying on the pillow next to my head, was a tiger lily. 46. What did the author believe would make her life different? (No more than 10 words) _______________________________________________________________ 47. What happened to the author after she used the freckle-remover cream? (No more than 10 words) _______________________________________________________________ 48. What does the underlined word “inadequate” mean in paragraph 3? (1 word) _______________________________________________________________ 49. How did the author’s grandfather comfort her when she cried? (No more than 15 words) _______________________________________________________________ 50. Do you think the tiger lily in her room would make the author feel better about her freckles? Why or why not? (No more than 25 words) _______________________________________________________________ 【答案】46. Having beautiful skin without freckles like her cousin’s./ She had beautiful skin that was all one color. 47. She got more and darker freckles. 48. Diffident/Unworthy Inferior. 49. He told her that all kinds of flowers are beautiful, meaning she is beautiful too. 50. Yes. It showed her grandfather’s love and that she is as unique and beautiful as a flower. 根据文章第一段“I couldn’t help comparing myself with her and thinking that my life would be different if I had beautiful skin too — skin that was all one color.(我忍不住拿自己和她对比,心想如果我也拥有漂亮均匀的肌肤,我的人生会截然不同)”可知,作者认为拥有均匀好看的皮肤就能改变生活,即拥有像表姐那样光滑无瑕、没有雀斑的漂亮肌肤。 根据文章第二段“However, instead of developing a peaches-and-cream skin, I just got more and darker freckles.(然而,我并没有拥有细腻无瑕的肌肤,反而长出了更多、颜色更深的雀斑)”可知,用完祛斑霜后她的雀斑更多更深。 根据文章第三段“I tried to explain why I didn’t want to have freckles and why I felt so inadequate when I compared my appearance with my cousin.(我试着解释自己讨厌雀斑的原因,以及和表姐对比容貌时内心的自卑)”,作者因雀斑觉得自己不如表姐,内心自卑、不值一提,inadequate表示“自卑的、不能胜任的”。 根据文章第三段“But child, there are all kinds of flowers, and they are all beautiful.(孩子,世间有各种各样的花,每一种都很美)”以及第五段“the first thing I saw, lying on the pillow next to my head, was a tiger lily.(我醒来第一眼就看见枕边放着一朵卷丹百合)”可推知,爷爷先用百花皆美的道理开导她,又留下一朵卷丹百合。 你校英文报“Arts and Culture”栏目正在举办征文活动,主题为“An Amazing Artwork”。 An Amazing Artwork ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】One possible version: An Amazing Artwork Zhang Zeduan’s Along the River During the Qingming Festival, created in the Northern Song Dynasty, is a timeless treasure of traditional Chinese art. 31. C Eight in 10 homes that are at high risk of flooding in England are now in towns and cities, according to new analysis by the National Housing Federation (NHF) Research found that 839,000 homes in urban areas are now classed at high risk of surface water flooding, a threefold increase since 2018. 非选择题(满分25分) 第四部分:写作(共两节,满分25分) 第一节:阅读表达(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) When I was a kid about twelve years old, I was already as tall as I am now, and I had a lot of freckles (雀斑). 46.
