Volunteer with Wolves in Romania
Romania has the largest population of gray wolves in Europe, yet these top hunters face growing dangers. Illegal hunting, habitat breaking up, and conflicts with farm animals have left many wolves without parents or injured, unable to survive in the wild alone.
On this deep volunteer programme, you will live and work at a respected wolf safe home located in the Carpathian Mountains. When you join Carpathian Wildlife, you will also receive:
Welcome Pack — Your detailed welcome pack contains everything you must know about your position and area around you, ready for your review.
Personal Guider — Assigned from an experienced group who have walked the same path and stand prepared to support you at every stage.
Room & Food — Relax in your shared wooden cabin on the reserve, with internet access and a warm shared spirit, and enjoy rich Transylvanian dishes.
Completion Certificate — Awarded to respect your commitment and hard work across the programme, a strong boost (助力) to your future career applications.
Imagine this: Your mornings begin with various duties across the shelter. Tasks range from building fences, preparing raw meat, taking care of forest trails, or recording behavior observations.
For the average traveller, glimpsing a wolf in its natural home ranks among life’s most treasured moments. Observing a wolf walk silently through the low plants is remarkable. Yet standing beside a wolf daily, and witnessing its confidence grow as it recovers from hurt, becomes an unforgettable chapter in your life.

As a reporter, I had covered political news for over two decades, and I had thought I would continue until my career came to an end. My husband, David Chen, is a history expert. One autumn, he invited me to accompany him to a history conference. Most of the scholarly discussions went over my head, yet one speaker caught my ear. Margaret Holt, a researcher who explores ancient sailing, showed a technique demonstrating (展示) how Pacific Island sailors crossed vast oceans using only stars and wave patterns.
During the coffee break, David introduced us. Holt and I spent nearly an hour discussing her findings and sea-related history. As we said goodbye, I laughed that if she ever needed an assistant with no experience, I would happily volunteer. Roughly six weeks later, a message arrived in my inbox: “Still waiting to hear from you. Have you signed up for the research programme?” And that was how, at 51, I became a part-time master’s student in the study of old things at sea.
My understanding of the study of old things had grown weak over the years, so I had to master the basics quickly. It proved hard, yet I received great support from fellow researchers and David. The deeper I dug, the more I discovered how much remained hidden. Each article opened doors to ten more. It exhausted me, and occasionally frustrated me, yet it filled me with real excitement. You explore, question, and gradually the scattered pieces connect.
Now, at 59, I am approaching the final stage. Fresh understanding transforms you, no matter what stage of life you have reached. My message is simple: if a chance appears to step into unfamiliar territory, seize it without hesitation.
4. What caught the author’s attention at the history conference?
A. A heated political debate with other researchers.
B. A historian sharing retirement plans for next years.
C. A talk about ancient sailing methods in big rivers.
D. A technique demonstrating Pacific Island sailing.
5. What can we infer from the message mentioned in Paragraph 2?
A. Holt considered the author’s words as a sincere offer.
B. The author often struggled with the research programme.
C. The author was introduced to the programme by her husband.
D. Holt discovered the author’s hidden gift for the study of old things.
6. How does the author find her experience of studying old things at sea?
A. Relaxing and amusing. B. Exhausting and upsetting. C. Hard yet exciting. D. Dull but instructive.
7. What is the author’s purpose in sharing her story?
A. To convince us that learning has no age limit.
B. To stress the value of obtaining a master’s degree.
C. To inspire us to develop an interest in history.
D. To warn us against staying in one career too long.
D 5. A 6. C 7. A

C
A project carried out by the University of Bristol has found for the first time the amount of sleep at which the majority of adults can gain mental advantages. The project has supplied the first scientific proof (证据) for how many hours of sleep you require per night to lower the risk of memory decline: roughly 7.5 hours. Given the structure of a typical sleep cycle, getting 7.5 hours of rest is equal to completing about five full cycles nightly.
The team performed a thorough data study and comparison of findings from ten international surveys covering over 95,000 subjects. The outcomes match other recent investigations, which indicate that mental gains are achieved at about 7.5 hours of sleep.
“What sets our project apart is that, for the first time, we established exact sleep targets. It presents that clear benefits can be obtained with small adjustments to nightly sleep duration (持续时间), and that for individuals with poor sleep habits, every extra 30 minutes adds to their brain function. This is encouraging because not everyone can manage almost 7.5 hours of sleep each night, at least not immediately, so you can establish modest, achievable targets and slowly build up and extend your nightly rest,” explains Dr. Helen Marsh, one of the main researchers of the project.
So, should we stop sleeping once we pass eight hours? “Certainly not,” Dr. James Liu, another main researcher of the project, stated firmly. “More sleep is never harmful. Our project showed that even as much as 10 hours of sleep per night does not create danger; on the contrary, there are further gains compared to resting 6-8 hours daily.”
The project offers people definite and easy to follow targets. This is where the value of the project lies — to supply simple and clear objectives for nightly sleep hours that people can conveniently monitor with their phones or smart watches, and in this way support people’s mental wellbeing.
8. What can we learn about the project according to Paragraph 1?
A. Its outcomes were supported by scientific proof.
B. It examined the structure of a sleep cycle.
C. It confirmed the advantages of resting.
D. It discovered a fresh method to prevent memory decline.
9. What does the underlined word “This” in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A. The duration of sleep is becoming longer and longer.
B. The duration of sleep is about 7.5 hours a night for most people.
C. The total duration of sleep is about 30 minutes for old people.
D. The duration of sleep with a small increase can bring benefits.
10. What is the purpose of the last paragraph?
A. To suggest a method to maintain mental health.
B. To show the significance of the project.
C. To encourage people to sleep more hours.
D. To prove the contribution of modern devices.
11. In which section of a newspaper may this text appear?
A. Education. B. Sports. C. Health. D. Environment.
A 9. D 10. B 11. C

根据第三段中的“It presents that clear benefits can be obtained with small adjustments to nightly sleep duration (持续时间), and that for individuals with poor sleep habits, every extra 30 minutes adds to their brain function. This is encouraging because not everyone can manage almost 7.5 hours of sleep each night, at least not immediately.(研究表明,只需小幅调整夜间睡眠时间,就能收获显著益处;对于睡眠习惯不佳的人而言,每晚多睡30分钟都能提升大脑机能。这一结论十分鼓舞人心,毕竟不是所有人都能做到每晚接近7.5小时睡眠,至少短期内难以实现。)”可知,前文讲述小幅增加睡眠时间即可收获益处,后文用This指代前文这件事。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据第五段中的“The project offers people definite and easy to follow targets. This is where the value of the project lies — to supply simple and clear objectives for nightly sleep hours that people can conveniently monitor with their phones or smart watches, and in this way support people’s mental wellbeing.(该项目为人们设定了明确且易于执行的目标。这正是此项目的价值所在:它提供简单清晰的夜间睡眠时长标准,人们可以通过手机或智能手表便捷监测,以此维护自身心理健康。)”可知,本段点明该研究存在的价值,由此能推出本段写作目的是展示这项研究的重要意义。

D
Teenagers ought to read books daily. That is an arguable idea, though not every parent will admit it. A few parents will insist that their teenagers are too busy with schoolwork for free reading. Far more of us suggest books, or claim we think highly of them, but the reading simply never happens.
That is an issue. To begin with, daily reading is helpful for teenagers. Engaging with the written word on a regular basis helps teenagers develop an understanding of various views, while at the same time strengthening their ability to recover.
One small study, carried out across a span of 20 years, discovered that the strongest sign for teenagers’ achievement in their late teens was whether they engaged with printed materials at age 5 or 6. Those early shared literary experiences developed into a lasting curiosity about learning in other aspects of their existence.
But despite how crucial their involvement is, few teenagers are spending much time to read at all. In a poll of 1,200 British parents, 78 percent stated they believed regular reading made teenagers “more deep thinking”. Yet while 85 percent remembered having read regularly during their own youth, only 48 percent of those with teenagers said they demanded daily reading for their children.
After-school clubs and test preparation are not automatic excuses from reading. The objective, at last, is to develop grown-ups who can maintain a curious mind in their personal and professional lives alongside whatever career ambitions they pursue. Reading builds that mental training.
What approach should you take when encouraging teenagers to read? Accept no-excuses. Don’t be concerned if you need to remind them again and again. If you are putting more effort in convincing the teenager to pick up a book than it would take to read it yourself, then your plan is working. Can screen time serve as a trading tool? Perhaps.
But if you’re attempting to teach teenagers to embrace reading as a natural habit, using fun as a reward for finishing parts of a book sends the wrong signal.
12. What can we infer from the first paragraph?
A. Very few teenagers actually read regularly.
B. Teenagers are extremely occupied with reading.
C. Reading is a must for all parents at home.
D. Family members ought to listen to one another.
13. What is found in the small study?
A. Reading helps a person lead a contented life.
B. A person’s achievement relies entirely on reading.
C. Reading forms a lasting curiosity about learning.
D. A child must begin reading at exactly age 5.
14. What does the author advise parents to do in the last paragraph?
A. Balance reading and test preparation.
B. Stick to encouraging teenagers to read.
C. Read books on behalf of their children.
D. Reward reading with extra screen time.
15. What is the best title of the text?
A. Adults Read Less in the UK B. Reading Matters to Teenagers
C. Parents’ Actions Speak Louder D. Teenagers Need More Attention at Home
A 13. C 14. B 15. B
根据第一段中的“A few parents will insist that their teenagers are too busy with schoolwork for free reading. Far more of us suggest books, or claim we think highly of them, but the reading simply never happens.(一些家长坚称孩子学业太忙没空阅读。更多家长虽推荐书籍或声称重视阅读,但阅读行为根本未发生。)”可知,尽管家长口头重视,但实际很少有青少年能坚持规律阅读。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中的“Those early shared literary experiences developed into a lasting curiosity about learning in other aspects of their existence.(那些早期的共读体验,逐渐发展为他们对生活中其他领域持久的学习好奇心。)”
Don’t be concerned if you need to remind them again and again.(不接受借口。即使需要反复提醒也不必担忧。)”以及最后一段“But if you’re attempting to teach teenagers to embrace reading as a natural habit, using fun as a reward for finishing parts of a book sends the wrong signal.(但如果你试图教导青少年将阅读视为一种自然而然的习惯,那么将娱乐活动作为读完部分章节的奖励,则会传递错误的信号。)”

Tips for Positive Thinking When Depressed
If you’re wondering how to become more positive when depressed, you may need some actionable tips to get started. ___16___
Keep a positive journal. Positive thoughts can be few and far between when you have depression. ___17___ Even if it’s something as small as seeing a beautiful flower or receiving a supportive text from a friend, keep a record of your better moments.
___18___ Next time you feel hopeless in the face of difficulties, imagine the most positive outcome. For example, you might dislike having depression, but imagine that one day you could use your story to help others — to start a support group or write a book.
Ask yourself if your negative beliefs are really true. Next time you observe a negative thought entering your mind, ask yourself: “Is there basis for this thought?” For example, has anyone ever told you that you were a terrible friend apart from yourself? ___19___ What about all the times you’ve been supportive or helpful to the people in your life? Hold your negative thoughts up for inspection and you’ll soon see which are worth your attention.
___20___ During depression, however, it often feels easier to hide under your covers and let the negative thoughts takeover than try to change your patterns. Try to challenge yourself during your stronger moments to try to find something to feel positive about.
A. How might that feel?
B. Here are some ideas.
C. Adjust mood to get a positive result.
D. Building healthy habits can be hard at the best of times.
E. If so, is that person’s opinion the only one you truly value?
F. Take a challenging situation and imagine the most positive outcome.
G. So each time a happy or hopeful thought comes into your head, write it down.
B 17. G 18. F 19. E 20. D
前文“If you’re wondering how to become more positive when depressed, you may need some actionable tips to get started. (如果你想知道如何在抑郁时变得更积极,你可能需要一些可行的建议来开始)”提到在抑郁时变得更积极需要可行的建议,后文段落具体介绍了这些建议,空处应该指出有这样一些建议,因此B项“Here are some ideas. (这里有一些想法)”符合语境,承上启下。故选B。
【17题详解】
段首句“Keep a positive journal. (坚持写积极向上的日记)”建议记录积极向上的想法,前文“Positive thoughts can be few and far between when you have depression. (当你抑郁时,积极的想法可能很少)”提到抑郁时积极的想法会很少,后文“Even if it’s something as small as seeing a beautiful flower or receiving a supportive text from a friend, keep a record of your better moments. (即使是看到一朵美丽的花或收到朋友的支持短信这样的小事,也要记录下你的美好时刻)”具体指出很美好的小事也值得记录,空处应该是建议及时记录下那些积极的想法,因此G项“So each time a happy or hopeful thought comes into your head, write it down. (所以每当一个快乐或充满希望的想法进入你的脑海时,把它写下来)”符合语境,呼应段首句,承上启下。故选G。
【18题详解】
根据后文“Next time you feel hopeless in the face of difficulties, imagine the most positive outcome. For example, you might dislike having depression, but imagine that one day you could use your story to help others—to start a support group or write a book. (下次当你在困难面前感到绝望时,想象一下最积极的结果。例如,你可能不喜欢抑郁,但想象有一天你可以用你的故事来帮助别人——成立一个支持小组或写一本书)”可知,本段主要建议想象一下最积极的结果,空处位于段首,是段落主旨句,应该与此相关,且需和其他段首句一样使用祈使句的形式。因此F项“Take a challenging situation and imagine the most positive outcome. (面对一个具有挑战性的情况,想象最积极的结果)”符合语境,可统领段落内容。故选F。
【19题详解】
前文“Next time you observe a negative thought entering your mind, ask yourself: “Is there basis for this thought?” For example, has anyone ever told you that you were a terrible friend apart from yourself? (下次当你看到一个消极的想法进入你的脑海时,问问自己:“这个想法有根据吗”例如,除了你自己,有没有人告诉过你,你是一个糟糕的朋友)”建议在有消极的想法时,质疑自己的想法,向自己提问,后文“What about all the times you’ve been supportive or helpful to the people in your life? (那你在生活中支持或帮助别人的时候呢)”依然是提问的问题,空处应该也是一个向自己提问的问题,因此E项“If so, is that person’s opinion the only one you truly value? (如果是这样,那个人的意见是你唯一真正看重的吗)”符合语境,承接前一句中的问题。故选E。
【20题详解】
根据后文“During depression, however, it often feels easier to hide under your covers and let the negative thoughts takeover than try to change your patterns. Try to challenge yourself during your stronger moments to try to find something to feel positive about.

Today was another interesting day at my new American school. Back in China, lunchtime is a ____21____ hour. We eat, talk, and most importantly, take a short nap (小睡) to ____22____ for the afternoon.
Last Christmas my older sister Jane got a unicycle (独轮脚踏车) she had requested. I thought it kind of strange, wondering why she would want something like that. She did ride and practice for a while, but eventually stopped.
Curious, I tried it, finding it very hard and thinking it impossible for a weak girl like me to learn. Since our dining room of our old house had low beams (屋梁), I used them like monkey bars to practice riding, which helped a lot. Because I thought it was really fun, I practiced every spare moment I had, teaching myself to go forwards, backwards and to turn. Practicing was something I loved to do in my spare time, but it did get discouraging when I fell. After months of practicing, I finally made it.
One morning, our teacher Maria excitedly announced that a school talent show was to be held to raise money for charity. She encouraged my classmates to sign up for it. I am not always the best in front of a crowd, which was why I was very nervous when I meant to put on my performance by doing a hula hoop (圈) and riding a unicycle on stage. But I overcame my fear and entered myself for the talent show, for which I practiced a lot in case I should make mistakes.
My routine (整套动作) was to do the hula hoop from my neck, down to my stomach, then to my knees. After that, I was to ride my unicycle forwards and backwards on stage. Lastly I would do the hula hoop while riding the unicycle. I was to do all this accompanied by my carefully selected music. I wondered what people from my seventh grade would think of my performance. With my friends inspiring me, I built up my confidence. On the night of the show, many people found out there was going to be a unicycle performance, so more came, even the headmaster.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
Para 1: When my turn came, I felt nervous yet excited.

Para 2: When I got home, I couldn’t wait to check my mobile phone left at home.
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
When my turn came, I felt nervous yet excited. I took a deep breath and slowly rode onto the stage. With soft music playing around me, I moved the hula hoop from my neck down to my knees smoothly, and the audience clapped warmly. Sadly, I lost balance and fell over when riding backward. Though I felt a little embarrassed, I picked myself up bravely and tried again. Focusing all my attention, I finished all the difficult moves perfectly. Soon loud cheers burst out from everyone present in the hall.
When I got home, I couldn't wait to check my mobile phone left at home. My classmates and teachers sent me many encouraging messages and the full video of my performance. Their sincere support meant a great deal to me. This unforgettable experience taught me a meaningful lesson. Failure is never terrible as long as we dare to keep going for our aims. I bravely pushed myself to face challenges and also helped raise money for charity. I truly believe that courage and perseverance will always guide us to steady growth in life.
