When I was twelve, my family moved to a new town. I felt lonely and missed my old friends. One Saturday, I noticed an empty lot near our house, full of rubbish. An idea came to me: why not turn it into a garden?
I told my plan to Mrs. Lee, our next-door neighbor. She was in her seventies and often sat alone on her porch (门廊). To my surprise, her eyes lit up. “I used to love gardening,” she said softly. “But after my husband passed away, I lost the heart for it.” She agreed to help.
We started the next weekend. First, we cleared the rubbish. It was hard work, and my arms ached. Mrs. Lee brought tools and showed me how to turn the soil. “Patience, child,” she would say. “Good things take time.”
We planted flowers and vegetables. Every afternoon after school, I would water them. Mrs. Lee taught me the names of each plant and how to care for them. Slowly, the empty lot changed. Colorful flowers bloomed, and tomatoes grew red under the sun. Neighbors began to stop by. Some brought more plants; others just smiled and said hello.
One day, a little girl from down the street brought a painted rock to add to the garden. “It is for the fairies (仙女),” she said seriously. We placed it near the roses. The garden was no longer just mine or Mrs. Lee’s—it belonged to the whole community.
By summer, the garden was full of life. But more importantly, I was not lonely anymore. I had made a friend with Mrs. Lee and met many neighbors. The garden taught me that beauty can grow in unexpected places because of kindness, and that sometimes, helping a piece of land can also help heal a lonely heart.
29. Why did the writer decide to turn the empty lot into a garden?
A. She loved gardening.
B. She moved to a new town.
C. She wanted to sell vegetables.
D. She felt lonely and needed something to do.
30. Which of the following is true according to the passage?
A. The garden was built with the help of the whole community.
B. The little girl brought many plants to add to the garden.
C. It took the writer little time to build the garden.
D. Neighbors taught me how to care for each plant.
31. What’s the main idea of the story?
A. It’s hard work to build a community garden.
B. Plants can grow in unexpected places.
C. Small acts of kindness can connect people.
D. Gardening is a good way to get close to nature.
【答案】29. D 30. A 31. C

C
At a summer party, mosquitoes (蚊子) bite some guests while luckier guests remain bite-free. “It feels personal sometimes—like, why are they biting me?” says Lisa Baik, a sensory biologist. Knowing what causes mosquitoes to bite or not can help researchers create better ways to stop them.
Baik’s team finds that mosquitoes also taste the surfaces on which they land. In fact, sweat (汗) may play a big role in whether they bite. Human sweat contains water, salt and amino acids (氨基酸). To see what mosquitoes prefer, the researchers placed salt and amino acids on separate surfaces. Mosquitoes ignored the salt. And they didn’t go for the amino acids, either. But when the team mixed both on the same surface, the mosquitoes started to bite.
In another experiment, researchers coated one side of a surface with sweat samples from several volunteers. Mosquitoes were much more attracted to sweat from two of those people than to the others. The researchers then looked at the activity of certain mosquito nerve cells (神经细胞) involved in taste. The more attractive sweat had a bigger effect on the activity of these nerves than the other sweat samples. “That suggests taste could be one of the factors that explain why some of us get bitten a lot more than others,” Baik says. “This discovery was quite exciting.”
Baik wanted to explore how taste might drive mosquitoes’ choice to bite or not. Tasting requires touch. We use our lips, mouth and tongue to taste. Mosquitoes do the same. They have a straw-like tube (吸管状的管子) with two small lips. These lips have tiny hairs that respond to touch. Scientists then tested how the hairs reacted to different flavors (味道). When sugars touched the hairs, they activated (激活) the nerve cells. Some bitter compounds (混合物), though, blocked the nerve cells’ response to sugar. This type of effect, Baik notes, hasn’t been seen in other insects. Adding such bitter compounds to sugar prevented the nerve response to sweetness and made the mosquitoes less likely to feed.
Baik is now hunting for just the right compound to stop mosquitoes from biting people. “It should be safe, low-cost and friendly to the environment. It could someday be used in a spray for skin and clothing,” she said.
32. What discovery did Baik find exciting in the experiment?
A. Increased nerve activity of mosquitoes with attractive sweat.
B. The role of amino acids in attracting mosquitoes.
C. The discovery of mosquitoes’ attraction to salty sweat.
D. Mosquitoes’ preference for sweat from young volunteers.
33. Which of the following can you learn from the passage?
A. Mosquitoes respond strongly to all flavors.
B. The mosquitoes’ touch can only respond to sweet flavors.
C. Bitter compounds can make mosquitoes’ nerve cells active.
D. Mosquitoes’ response to sugar can be stopped by bitter compounds.
34. Which can be the best title for the text?
A. The Impact of Salt and Amino Acids on Mosquito Behavior.
B. How Mosquitoes Taste and Choose the Target to Bite.
C. The Role of Touch in Mosquito Feeding Behavior.
D. How Mosquitoes React to Different Flavors.
【答案】32. A 33. D 34. B
根据文章第三段中“The more attractive sweat had a bigger effect on the activity of these nerves than the other sweat samples... ‘This discovery was quite exciting.’”可知,Baik认为令人兴奋的发现是更具吸引力的汗液能显著增强蚊子相关神经细胞的活动。
【33题详解】
根据文章第四段中“Some bitter compounds, though, blocked the nerve cells’ response to sugar. ... Adding such bitter compounds to sugar prevented the nerve response to sweetness...”
D
The rapid rise of artificial intelligence (AI) tools such as ChatGPT has caused widespread debate about their impact on education. While some teachers worry that such technology may weaken students’ writing abilities, others argue that it presents an opportunity to rethink how critical thinking and effective writing are taught in middle and high school classrooms.
AI tools can generate fluent text within seconds, raising worries about accuracy and originality (原创性). Because these systems are trained on large amounts of online material, their responses may contain mistakes, oversimplifications, or hidden biases (偏见). Rather than saying no to such tools, some educators suggest using them as objects of analysis. By examining AI-generated responses carefully, students can practice identifying inconsistencies (矛盾), questioning arguments, and checking information against reliable sources.
Another concern is that AI reflects the material it is trained on. Voices and opinions that are not heard much online could become further marginalized (边缘化) through repeated use of automated tools. This limitation offers a teaching moment. When students compare multiple AI responses on related topics, they can begin to recognize patterns of omission (遗漏) and bias, strengthening their awareness of how information systems shape knowledge.
AI-generated writing also differs noticeably from human writing. Although the writing is grammatically correct, it often lacks a unique personal voice, deep emotional expressions, or original insight.
Some teachers respond by designing assignments that rely on personal experience or unique sources. Tasks such as interviews, first-person accounts, or comparisons of uncommon texts require synthesis. Instead of copying, students must think critically about and connect different pieces of information from these unique sources to construct their own argument or insight, a complex cognitive process that automated tools cannot easily provide. Similarly, drawing on classroom discussion as a reference point encourages students to participate actively and treat shared dialogue as part of the learning process.
Overall, the challenge presented by AI is not purely technological but educational. As AI becomes more common, these skills grow more valuable rather than less. Instead of resisting (抵抗) change, educators are increasingly focused on guiding students to use new tools critically, thoughtfully, and responsibly.
35. What is a suggested educational use of AI-generated text?
A. Letting students copy it directly. B. Making it a major research source.
C. Having students analyze it critically. D. Training students to imitate its style.
36. What does the underlined word “synthesis” in Paragraph 5 probably mean?
A. The ability to analyze and combine various sources to form new understanding.
B. The skill of copying and summarizing others’ opinions correctly.
C. The method of memorizing large amounts of knowledge quickly.
D. The power of examining and telling human writing from AI writing.
37. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A. Teachers will design more assignments that can be easily completed by AI tools.
B. The ability to use AI tools critically will be an important skill for students.
C. Classroom discussion will be replaced by AI communication gradually.
D. Educators will lead students to refuse the popularization of AI tools in schools.
38. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. AI tools have more disadvantages than advantages in education.
B. AI asks students to develop critical thinking in writing assignments.
C. AI brings challenges to education, but offers chances to improve teaching.
D. AI will replace teachers in teaching critical thinking and writing in the future.
【答案】35. C 36. A 37. B 38. C
根据第二段“Rather than saying no to such tools, some educators suggest using them as objects of analysis. By examining AI-generated responses carefully, students can practice identifying inconsistencies, questioning arguments, and checking information against reliable sources.”可知,教育者建议将AI生成的文本作为分析对象,让学生仔细检查、识别矛盾,即进行批判性分析。
【36题详解】
根据第五段“Instead of copying, students must think critically about and connect different pieces of information from these unique sources to construct their own argument or insight”可知,学生需要连接不同来源的信息来构建自己的论点,这与A选项“分析并结合各种来源以形成新的理解”意思一致。
【37题详解】
根据最后一段“As AI becomes more common, these skills grow more valuable... educators are increasingly focused on guiding students to use new tools critically, thoughtfully, and responsibly.”
Influenced by factors like not enough school funding (资金), poor sports equipment, a lack of teacher resources and safety concerns, traditional physical education was limited to quiet and closed gyms and playgrounds. These places didn’t have much interaction and quick feedback for students. PE curriculum (课程) only covered basic sports like ball games, track and field and gymnastics. However, the popularization of new technologies like virtual reality (VR) (虚拟现实) and 3D technology has greatly improved sports scenes, providing possibilities for building a flexible “in-class, on-campus, online” new integrated (一体化) sports world.
IT can build online virtual learning environments for students to create teaching scenes that are hard to achieve in the real world. Many schools have already partnered with technology companies to create different teaching scenes using digital sports products. The University of South Florida has teamed up with the VR sports training company Sense Arena. Students can practice tennis on the VR tennis training platform because the platform imitates (模仿) real-life tennis match scenes and provides various training modes. Students use the Meta Quest 2 headset and VR touching racket (球拍) which imitates the weight and feel of a real tennis racket. The platform has 35 training modes that copy various scenes. Athletes can take part in various forms of training, such as skill practice, technical analysis and match imitation. Such virtual sports teaching space further improves the experience of PE learning.
Besides benefiting ordinary students, technology-based PE can also meet the needs of students who cannot take part in regular PE classes due to physical or psychological conditions. Many schools offer specialized sports programs to these students, like the “Pathways to Inclusion” program started by the University of Queensland, which designs various sports activities for different disabilities, such as blind football and wheelchair hockey. This is made possible with the support of sports technology, as different symptoms require the use of different sports equipment.
With the ideas of being scientific, healthy and joyful, technology-based PE classes convey (传达) the values of creating and enjoying a personalized experience, developing a sports education where everyone can take part in sports and benefit from it.
39. What can IT do to create teaching scenes that are hard to achieve in the real world?
