Sharks are most famous for attacking other sea creatures. Yet they have been threatened by human activities. Scientists say sharks have lived in the world’s oceans for millions of years. Today, there are more than 500 different kinds of sharks. Most sharks are about two meters long. And the biggest whale shark can grow to a length of twenty meters. Sharks have an extremely good sense of smell. They also sense electrical power linked to muscles of living animals. These powerful senses mainly help them find their food. They eat fish, other sharks and plants. Some sharks can be found in rivers. Most sharks live in warm oceans. However, some sharks leave ocean waters to enter freshwater rivers and lakes.

Bertha Ngumbi, my mother, is one of the kindest women I know. However, when I was a child growing up in Kenya with my four siblings (兄弟姐妹), her kindness often annoyed us. Whenever visitors came to our home, whether relatives or strangers, expected or not, my mother would ask us to prepare and serve them black tea. If visitors arrived during lunch or dinner, she would invite them to eat with us, which meant less food for the family. As children, we felt unhappy and sometimes even complained about it.
My sister Faith especially disliked those moments when we had little firewood or when the wood was wet from rain, because making tea became difficult. My sisters and I even believed that some people took advantage of our mother’s generosity by appearing at mealtime.
Years later, after moving to the United States to live and teach, I began to see things differently. My mother’s kindness had deeply influenced me. Even when I struggled myself, I still tried to help relatives, friends, and even strangers. If unexpected visitors came to my house one day, I would warmly offer them tea and food, just as my mother always did.
Wanting to understand the source of her kindness, I asked my mother about it. She explained that she had learned it from her own mother, my grandmother. Growing up in a large family with eight siblings, my mother often returned home from school to discover that some of their lunch had been given away to hungry travelers. Although the children were upset at times, their mother continued helping others whenever she could.
When I asked my mother whether she would have changed if she had known we disliked her generosity, she answered firmly that she would never stop helping people. Today, I fully understand her actions and remain deeply grateful for the compassion (同情) she planted in me.
24. Why did the author dislike unexpected visitors when she was young?
A. They interrupted family activities.
B. They always asked for more black tea.
C. Her family had to share meals with them.
D. Her siblings needed to serve them food first.
25. What did the author do after moving to the US?
A. She avoided bothering others.
B. She lived a poor life for a long time.
C. She was friendly towards others.
D. She kept complaining about her mother.
26. Why did the author ask her mother about her kindness?
A. To understand its origin.
B. To memorize her childhood.
C. To change her mother’s mind.
D. To express her gratitude.
27. How did the author’s attitude to her mother’s kindness change over time?
A. From seeing it as a shame to a road map.
B. From not understanding it to valuing it.
C. From supporting it to complaining about it.
D. From taking it lightly to viewing it as a trouble.

Artificial intelligence (AI) has made great progress in creating pictures, but it still faces some problems. Sometimes AI creates people with strange faces or too many fingers. It also has difficulty making clear pictures in different sizes and shapes. To solve these problems, computer scientists at Rice University developed a new method called ElasticDiffusion.
“Diffusion models like Midjourney and DALL-E create impressive results, generating (产生) fairly lifelike and photo-realistic images,” said Moayed Haji Ali, a computer science doctoral student at Rice University. “But they can only generate square images. So, in cases where there are different aspect ratios (比例), such as on a monitor or a smartwatch, these models don’t work well.”
Researchers explained that this problem is partly caused by overfitting (过度拟合). This means the AI becomes too dependent on the kind of pictures it learned from during training. As a result, it cannot easily deal with new image sizes or shapes. Training AI with a wider variety of pictures could help, but the biggest problem is that this would require huge amounts of computing power.
To improve the situation, the researchers studied how diffusion models process information. They found that the models mix two kinds of signals together. One signal contains local details, such as eyes, hair, or fur. The other contains global information, including the overall shape and structure of the picture. When these signals are copied into non-square images, mistakes often appear.
ElasticDiffusion separates the two signals instead of combining them. First, it keeps the global structure of the picture clear. Then it adds detailed information to different parts of the image step by step. In this way, the AI can create cleaner and more natural pictures without extra training.
Researchers believe this method may help AI adapt to different image sizes more successfully in the future. However, ElasticDiffusion still takes much longer to create pictures than other AI models. Scientists now hope to improve its speed while keeping the images clear and consistent.
28. How does the author introduce the topic?
A. By making comparisons. B. By imagining a situation.
C. By giving a definition. D. By presenting related problems.
29. Why is it difficult to train AI with huge numbers of pictures?
A. It needs powerful computer support.
B. It reduces the speed of picture sharing.
C. AI is unable to recognize new pictures.
D. AI may over-process new image sizes or shapes.
30. What can we infer about ElasticDiffusion?
A. It allows AI to learn without any training.
B. It improves image quality by dividing tasks.
C. It replaces local details with global signals.
D. It decorates pictures by human correction.
31. What is the best title for the text?
A. A Leader of Future Education B. A New Challenge for Rice University
C. A Risk to Modern Technology D. A Smarter Way to Create Images
【答案】28. D 29. A 30. B 31. D
【解析】

A new study shows that listening to your favorite exercise music may greatly improve endurance (耐力). Cyclists exercising with self-selected songs lasted nearly 20% longer than when riding in silence, yet they didn’t feel more fatigued at the end. Researchers believe music may help people stay in the “pain zone” longer without feeling more pressure from exercise.
The study included 29 adults who completed two cycling tests at the same intensity (强度) level. One test was done in silence, while the other allowed participants to listen to their favorite songs. When music was played, most of which had a fast beat, around 120 to 140 beats per minute, participants exercised for an average of 35.6 minutes. Without music, the average time was only 29.8 minutes.
Lead researcher Andrew Danso said the results could have practical value for anyone trying to improve exercise performance or stick with a training routine. “Self-selected music doesn’t change your fitness level or make your heart work dramatically harder in the moment — it simply helps you tolerate sustained effort for longer. It may be an incredibly simple, zero-cost tool that lets people push further in training without feeling extra strain at the end. Our findings suggest that the right playlist may make tough sessions feel more doable and more enjoyable,” Danso explained.
Despite exercising longer and burning more energy overall, participants showed similar heart rates at the end of both tests. This suggests that the music did not reduce the physical demands of the workout itself. Instead, it appeared to bring participants a clear improvement in endurance and help them tolerate discomfort for a longer period of time.
“Many people struggle to stick with hard training because it feels exhausting too quickly,” said Danso. “Our research shows that letting people choose their own motivating music may help them accumulate (累积) more quality training time, which could translate to better fitness gains, improved adherence (坚持) to exercise programs, and possibly more people staying active.”
32. What does the underlined word “fatigued” in paragraph 1 probably mean?
A. Lonely. B. Tired. C. Energetic. D. Hopeful.
33. What does paragraph 2 mainly talk about concerning the study?
A. The process. B. The challenges.
C. The purposes. D. The background.
34. How did music affect the participants in cycling?
A. They became interested in singing. B. They showed much lower heart rates.
C. They could remain active for longer. D. They preferred high-intensity workouts.
35. What can we learn about the results of the research from Danso’s words?
A. They require further research.
B. They support experts’ previous opinions.
C. They question the value of difficult training.
D. They have great real-world significance.
【答案】32. B 33. A 34. C 35. D

Three Tricks to Control Your Shopping and Spending
Increase the Pain of Paying
Paying is painful. ____36____. Paying may cause real psychological (心理的) discomfort. More importantly, the clearer the act of paying, the stronger the discomfort, and the less likely people are to finish a purchase (购买). This "pain of paying" decreases when payment becomes easier.
____37____. Not surprisingly, research shows mobile payment (compared to cash) always increases spending and debt. To limit impulse (冲动) buying, make paying less convenient. Record each purchase, use cash to make spending feel real.
Think Why Not
When we make decisions, our brain starts to judge options by past experiences. ____38____. Once one option passes an internal limit, it wins, and then we act — often without realizing how the order of our thoughts shaped the result.
Some people believe that the order of these thoughts matters. We usually think of reasons for one option first, giving it an early advantage. In shopping, buying often comes to mind before not buying. To overcome this tendency, deliberately (故意地) think of one or two reasons not to buy before listing reasons to buy. ____39____.
Wait for It
For unnecessary items, create a waiting list instead of buying immediately. Write down the item and wait two or three days before finishing the purchase. ____40____. By the time you return to it, the urge to buy may have disappeared.
A. This simple change can reduce impulse purchases
B. It is like we are gathering arguments for each option
C. A spending journal is a valuable tool for tracking financial habits
D. One key technique to control spending is to create a clear and correct plan
E. Brain research shows high prices make a region linked to pain become active
F. Companies worldwide try to make paying easier and faster like mobile payment
G. The act of listing it brings some satisfaction, but the waiting allows emotions to cool
【答案】36. E 37. F 38. B 39. A 40. G

根据空后的“Not surprisingly, research shows mobile payment (compared to cash) always increases spending and debt.(不出所料,研究表明和现金相比,移动支付总会增加开销与负债。)”
根据空前的“When we make decisions, our brain starts to judge options by past experiences.(我们做决定时,大脑会依据过往经历评判各个选择。)”以及空后的“Once one option passes an internal limit, it wins, and then we act — often without realizing how the order of our thoughts shaped the result.(一旦某个选择通过内心评判标准,我们就会采纳它,往往意识不到思考顺序如何影响结果。)”
根据空前的“To overcome this tendency, deliberately (故意地) think of one or two reasons not to buy before listing reasons to buy.(为克服这种倾向,在罗列购买理由前,刻意想出一两个不买的理由。)”可知,前文给出反向思考的具体做法,空格需要说明该做法带来的效果。A选项“This simple change can reduce impulse purchases(这个简单的改变能够减少冲动消费)”中This simple change指代前文先想不买理由的做法,点明该方法的作用,承接上文给出对策,符合语境。
【40题详解】
根据空前的“Write down the item and wait two or three days before finishing the purchase.(把商品记下来,等两三天再决定是否购买。)”以及空后的“By the time you return to it, the urge to buy may have disappeared.(等你再回看这条记录时,购买冲动或许已经消失了。)”可知,空格需要解释写下商品+等待这一行为的双重作用。G选项“The act of listing it brings some satisfaction, but the waiting allows emotions to cool(记录商品的行为会带来一点满足感,但等待能让冲动情绪平复下来)”分别对应前文记录、等待两个动作,解释延迟购买法生效的原理,引出后文冲动消退的结果,符合语境。

67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
On Cathy’s thirteenth birthday, her mother, Ann, took her to a pet store in New York to look at dogs. Actually, the outing had been weeks in the making. Ever since Cathy turned ten, she had been begging for a puppy (幼犬) of her own.
She had done her chores without complaint, saved her pocket money, and even created a “Dog Care Contract”, promising to feed, walk, and love her future pet. What’s more, she would always describe to anyone who would listen exactly what her dream dog looked like. When Ann finally suggested a trip to the pet store, Cathy was too excited to sleep the night before.
The moment they stepped through the glass doors, the air was filled with the soft yips (吠叫声) of puppies. While Ann chatted with a clerk near the front counter, Cathy wandered past rows of shining enclosures (围场). Then, in a quiet corner, she froze. A three-month-old cockapoo named Gigi was curled up in a blue blanket. The puppy had chocolate-brown eyes and warm, honey-colored fur. When Gigi stumbled to her feet and pressed a cold, wet pink nose against Cathy’s palm, she was immediately won over. She turned to her mother, her face glowing. “She is perfect,” Cathy whispered, the hope in her eyes saying everything her words could not. But as Ann approached, Cathy saw a small cardboard tag (标牌). Her heart sank. In neat black letters, it read: “Sold.” She looked at the tag, and her face turned pale. She tried hard not to cry, and slowly took her hand away from the glass. “It’s okay,” she said quietly. “She probably has a really nice home already.”
Ann knelt down. “Wait here, sweetheart,” she said softly. “I’ll be right back.” Then she walked to the counter and spoke with the store manager.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
(2)请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
A moment later, the manager returned, carrying Gigi in her arms.

Hearing her mom’s explanation, Cathy carefully took Gigi from the manager’s arms.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】参考范文:
A moment later, the manager returned, carrying Gigi in her arms. She approached Cathy and gently said, “Happy birthday, girl. It belongs to you now.” Cathy stood still, confused. She looked at her mother, not understanding why this was happening. Ann walked over and smiled. She explained that she had picked this puppy three weeks ago. She just wanted to give Cathy a big surprise on this special day. Cathy’s eyes grew wide. Then a bright smile spread across her face, and happy tears filled her eyes.
Hearing her mom’s explanation, Cathy carefully took Gigi from the manager’s arms. The puppy licked her face at once. Cathy held her close and felt the warm, soft fur against her chest. Tears of joy ran down her cheeks. She looked up at her mother and tried to speak, although no words came out. Ann understood. She hugged both Cathy and the little dog. They stood there together in the bright sunshine. Cathy knew this was the best present of her life. She would love Gigi and care for her forever.

Ultimate Yellowstone & Grand Teton Safari
Overview
Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks are among the most famous natural areas in the United States. A seven-day safari tour gives visitors a chance to enjoy the beauty of the two parks. Under the guidance of naturalist leaders who know the area well, travelers are taken to wildlife locations that many ordinary tourists fail to discover.
The tour follows the path of President Theodore Roosevelt, who visited Yellowstone in 1903 and greatly admired its natural beauty. After seeing the park’s amazing landforms and rich wildlife, he believed such places should be protected for future generations. Today, Yellowstone and Grand Teton remain two of America’s most valuable national parks.
What to do
During the trip, visitors can see a wide variety of wild animals. These include elk, bison, moose, bighorn sheep, foxes, coyotes, bald eagles, black bears, grizzly bears and wolves. One highlight of the safari is a relaxing float trip on the Snake River near the Grand Teton. Moving quietly along the river, visitors may see moose, elk and otters nearby, while eagles fly high above the mountains. The beautiful scenery of Jackson Hole and the tall peaks (山峰) of the Teton make the experience even more memorable.
Transportation
The tour also provides comfortable travel conditions. Visitors ride in specially designed vehicles (车辆) equipped with soft seats, USB chargers and pop-top roofs, allowing a 360° view of the surrounding landscape and wildlife.

D
