Staying sharp
Hobbies can boost (提升) memory, attention and brain health.
Hobbies not only make us happy, but also keep our brains healthy. A Canadian study found that long-term hobbies can improve the brain’s structure (大脑结构).
The research studied 58 people who love bird-watching. Half were experts, while the other half were beginners. Both groups included people of different ages, from the 20s to the 70s, and were similar in education.
[During brain scans (扫描), volunteers saw a bird photo for less than four seconds. Then, they had to pick the bird from four different pictures.] This test was done 72 times, with 18 different kinds of birds.
The expert group successfully picked out 83 percent of local birds and 61 percent of non-local ones, while the beginners only got 44 percent right for both. [The scans also showed differences in brain structure: the areas responsible for attention and working memory are more compact (紧密的) in the experts, no matter the age.] These areas also “lit up” when the experts tried to pick non-local birds - something that did not happen in the beginners’ brains.
Creative hobbies, like music and dancing, are also good for the brain. A 2025 study found that the brains of dancers appeared over seven years younger than their actual age. AI models also showed that even short-term creative learning, like 30 hours, can “turn back time” for the brain. “Creativity shapes not only culture but biology (生物学),” the scientists wrote on The Conversation.
58. What is the main benefit of hobbies mentioned in the first paragraph?
A. They can make people more outgoing.
B. They can improve memory, attention and brain health.
C. They can help people make more friends.
D. They can help people lose weight.
59. How many people were studied in the Canadian bird-watching research?
A. 18 B. 36 C. 58 D. 72
60. Compared with beginners, what was the success rate of experts in identifying non-local birds?
A. 44% B. 61% C. 83% D. 100%
61. What can we learn from the brain scan results of the bird-watching research?
A. Beginners have no brain activity at all during the test.
B. Experts’ brains are completely different in size from beginners’ .
C. The brain areas related to attention and working memory are more compact in experts.
D. Age has a great influence on the brain structure of experts.
62. What is the main idea of the last paragraph?
A. Only dancing can make people’s brains younger.
B. Creative hobbies like music and dancing are good for the brain.
C. Short-term creative learning has no effect on the brain.
D. Creativity only shapes people’s culture, not biology.
C
Writing a good story is no easy task. What’s the secret? Mo Yan, the 2012 Nobel Prize winner in literature, believes his success comes from doing a lot of reading.
Mo was born into a farming family in a village in Shandong Province. He grew up listening to folk stories about gods, spirits and foxes. Those stories later became the inspiration for Mo’s writing.
Mo left school at the age of 12 and started to work in the fields. Although he was tired after his daily hard work, Mo was always hungry for books. However, there were very few in the village. He read his older brother’s textbooks and even dictionaries. He also helped others with farm work in exchange for books. “When I finished reading all the books around, I thought I was the most knowledgeable (有知识的) man in the world,” he told Xinhua.
After Mo left his hometown and joined the army in 1976, he began to read widely, including works by Lu Xun and many other famous writers.
He studied from these writers but did not copy them. Instead, he developed his own style. “I grew up in an environment filled with folk culture. It enters my novels whenever I pick up a pen. This has influenced or even decided my style,” Mo told a group of reporters in his hometown after he won the award.
As the first Chinese person to win a Nobel Prize in literature, he was highly praised by the organization for his works. They said his writing is where fantasy and reality meet, bringing together historical and social perspectives (看法).
Choose the answer:
63. What inspired Mo Yan’s writing?
A. Working in the fields. B. His family members.
C. His education at school. D. Stories he heard as a child.
64. What is Paragraph 3 mainly about?

C. What types of books Mo Yan preferred to read. D. Why Mo Yan helped others with farm work.
65. How did Mo Yan feel after reading all the books he could find?
A. He felt bored. B. He felt empty. C. He felt proud. D. He felt puzzled.
66. What do we know about Mo’s writing style?
A. It is the only one that focuses on folk culture. B. It is very similar to Lu Xun’s writing style.
C. His life experience in the army changed it a lot. D. His childhood environment had a big effect on it.
67. What did the Nobel Prize organization say about Mo Yan’s writing?
A. It is focused on folk stories. B. It mixes fantasy and reality.
C. It tries to solve social problems. D. It is largely based on historical events.
D
Look around! Labubu, a funny little monster toy, is becoming popular around the world. It has big eyes and sharp teeth. Most people buy it in “blind boxes” —you don’t know which Labubu toy you will get until you open it. This surprise makes it exciting.
Why is Labubu so popular? First, it looks special and different. Second, the fun surprise of the blind box makes people want to collect more. Third, young people share photos online, making it even more popular.
This is important for China. Labubu isn’t a panda or dragon (as the old symbols of China). It’s a new and creative design. Its worldwide success shows that China can make cool, modern pop culture that most people enjoy. It helps change how people see the things made in China.
Besides, Labubu is making the Chinese artists and designers famous around the world. As Pop Mart opens stores in other countries, it brings Chinese pop culture to people around the world.
In the future, we will probably see more Chinese characters and stories like Labubu become popular around the world. As China creates fun and cool things, they will continue to spread to new countries: This shows that China’s pop culture can win hearts everywhere in the world. And the world will know and love more creative ideas from China.
68. What does Labubu look like?
A. A cute panda with small eyes. B. A funny monster with big eyes and sharp teeth.
C. A traditional Chinese dragon. D. A round toy with no special features.
69. How do most people buy Labubu toys?
A. Through online games. B. In “blind boxes” with surprise designs.
C. Only in Chinese stores. D. By choosing designs they like in open boxes.
70. Why does the writer talk about the “panda” and “dragon”?
A. To describe Labubu’s size.
B. To show Labubu is a traditional Chinese symbol.
C. To explain why Labubu is less popular.
D. To compare old symbols with new Chinese creativity.
71. What is the structure of the passage?
A. ①/②/③④/⑤ B. ①/②③④/⑤ C. ①/②③/④⑤ D. ①/②③④⑤
