My name is Grace. I am a Grade Seven student. I live in a small town with my parents and my little brother Leo. Leo is seven years old, and he goes to primary school. My mother works in a town library, and my father is a farmer. He grows vegetables and fruit on our farm behind the house.

Do you know sloths (树懒)? Sloths are small slow-moving animals that live in the rainforests of South America. They spend almost all their lives on tall trees, and they hardly ever come down to the ground. Sloths look very cute with thick brown fur, round black eyes and short legs. There are two main kinds of sloths: two-toed sloths and three-toed sloths.
Sloths are famous for being the slowest mammals on Earth. They only move about 0.24 kilometers per hour on trees. When they are on the ground, they move even more slowly, only about 0.16 kilometers per hour. Why do they move so slowly? Their main food is tree leaves, and leaves have very little energy. Slow movement helps sloths save energy every day. Sloths sleep for 15 to 20 hours every day. They usually hang upside down on tree branches when they sleep and eat.
Many people think sloths are lazy, but slow movement is also a good way to stay safe. Their brown fur looks like tree bark. When they stay still on trees, wild cats and big birds can hardly find them. Small green algae grow on sloths’ fur, which makes them look more like green leaves in the rainforest. This special color is their best protection against dangerous animals.
Sloths only climb down to the ground once a week to go to the toilet. It is the most dangerous time for them. Big predators wait on the ground to catch slow sloths. Some sloths get hurt or lose their lives during this short trip down the tree. Sloths swim much better than they walk. They can swim three times faster than moving on trees. When rainforest rivers rise in rainy seasons, sloths swim between trees to find new food leaves.
Now rainforest areas become smaller because of human activities. Many sloths lose their homes and food. Lots of environmental groups work hard to protect rainforests and save sloths. We should stop cutting too many rainforest trees and learn more about these special slow animals. Every small action can help sloths live safely in their natural home.
