I worked as a volunteer at the Children’s Hospital in Cape Town, South Africa. My job was to help make the kids feel happy when they stayed in the hospital. Sounds interesting, right? But some people cannot understand why I did it.
Let me tell you why I volunteered. The main reason was to help create a better future for people, no matter who or where they are. In this big world, so many people need help. Look at the children in the hospital where I worked. They felt afraid and lonely facing all the difficulties because their parents also had other kids to care for. So, why not try to help as many people as possible? That was my idea.
Volunteering in Africa and helping people there let me see other parts of the world. And volunteering in the hospital showed me another side of the world I did not know about before. I met people from all over the world, each with their own ideas, experiences and dreams. We got to share so much with each other and we always had a good time.

More and more people choose paid study rooms with cute tables and chairs, green plants, pretty walls and quiet computer keyboards (键盘). To build a friendly learning environment, some rooms have cold white light to help people focus on their work. Some places have sunrooms (日光室) and learners can enjoy beautiful nature from large windows. The workers will tell people to keep quiet in the study areas.
“We hope to offer a perfect learning place to people who want to study,” said Wang Yi, founder (创始人) of a 24-hour paid study room. “The number of people coming was much larger than we first thought, so we are now looking for new places.”
Feng Jia comes to the paid study room to prepare for exams. “There are not enough seats in public libraries,” he said. “At home, it is even harder to focus because of phones, snacks and pets.”
While many people welcome the paid study rooms, others are afraid that these rooms will replace libraries. Xu Qiang, director of the Shanghai Library’s reader service centre, believes that public libraries and paid study rooms are satisfying different needs of people. “People come to public libraries for the large number of books, while they go to the study rooms for the learning environment,” said Xu.

①What is the reason for pain? Pain hurts us, but could it be good for us? Is pain in fact helpful?
②Pain is the body’s way to tell us that something is wrong so that we stop what we are doing to protect the body. For example, if you break your leg, pain stops you from walking on it. If you didn’t feel any pain, you would continue walking around and you could hurt your leg more. But why does it continue to hurt even after you stop walking on your hurt leg? It is because your body needs you to rest so as to have the energy to mend (愈合) the broken leg.
③But how does pain work? We have special cells (细胞) in our eyes, and inside our bodies too. When something goes wrong, these cells send messages to the brain (脑). The brain then makes us feel pain, so we will stop doing things causing the pain. Put your hand on a hot pan, and your hand’s cells tell your brain. You are able to quickly move your hand away from the heat. At the same time, your brain gets the message that something is wrong and you need to care for your hand. It all happens in less than a second.
④But did you know that the brain itself cannot feel pain? In fact, when doctors cut into the brain, they do not let the person sleep. Because the person does not feel any pain in the brain, it is thought to be much safer if the person is awake (醒着的) while the doctor works.
48. Why is pain helpful sometimes according to the text?
A. It teaches us about the way our bodies move and grow.
B. It reminds us to keep awake when doctors cut into the brain.
C. It makes us stop the wrong things that we’re doing to protect us.
D. It tells doctors about problems with the body so that they can fix them.
49. What might happen to people who couldn’t feel pain after they fell?
A. Their lives would be easier. B. They would stand up quickly.
C. They would get hurt more. D. They would not be afraid of falling.
50. Which of the following shows the structure of the passage?
A. B. C. D.
51. In Paragraph③, what does the underlined word “It” refer to?
A. The moment you put your hand on a hot pan.
B. The process of your hand moving away and your brain getting the message.
C. The pain you feel when your hand touches the hot pan.
D. The special cells sending messages to the brain.
52. What is the text mainly about?
A. How pain hurts our brains. B. How doctors work on the brain.
C. How the brain moves our bodies. D. How pain works to protect our bodies.
