Here is an introduction to four astronomical telescopes.
Very Large Telescope (VLT)
Completed in 1998, the VLT atop Cerro Paranal in Chile’s Atacama Desert features four 8.2-metre unit telescopes and four 1.8-metre auxiliary (辅助的) ones. Its ability to work as an optical interferometer (光学干涉仪) with adaptive optics (自适应光学) enables high-precision observations. As ESO’s (欧洲南方天文台的) key instrument, it has advanced our knowledge of stellar and galactic evolution (恒星与星系的演化) and will keep exploring the cosmos (宇宙).
Five-hundred-metre Aperture Spherical Telescope (FAST)
Built in 2016 in Guizhou, China, FAST is the world’s largest single-aperture radio telescope. With a 500-metre diameter and real-time shape adjustment tech, it detects weak cosmic radio signals. Having discovered over 800 pulsars (脉冲星), it’s set to make more breakthroughs in cosmic origin and dark matter research.
Hubble Space Telescope
Launched in 1990, orbiting Earth, the Hubble offers clear views with high-resolution imaging. This space-based observatory has provided crucial data on galaxy evolution and the universe’s birth. Despite its age, it remains vital for new astronomical discoveries.
Big Bear Solar Observatory
Established in 1969 in California, USA, this 1.6-metre-aperture telescope focuses on the Sun. It has contributed significantly to solar physics, especially in studying magnetic fields (磁场) and flares (耀斑), and will continue enhancing our understanding of the Sun.

In Toronto, one man and his glasses are helping make the city a friendlier place, one bus ride at a time.
Minjae Cho, known online as Magnetic MJ, spends his days wishing strangers a great week or simply telling them they make the world a better place. Not long ago, Cho was like thousands of other Torontonians, commuting (通勤) by bus and subway, going to work, and feeling lonely. Today, he’s a full-time influencer with more than 36,000 Instagram followers and recognition from city leaders, including Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow and the head of the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC).
“It started at a time when I was in a lonely disconnected part of my life,” Cho told CTV News Toronto. “I wanted to push myself to show up more openly in everyday life with social interactions, and to rebuild my social confidence.”
Cho records his interactions using Meta glasses, which he says feel less intrusive (打扰的) than a phone camera. His videos often capture moments of hesitation that turn into smiles, laughter, hugs, and sometimes tears. Viewers frequently comment that his simple words have helped them through difficult days or moments of emotional struggle.
“What I’m doing is harmless,” Cho said. “I’m just saying, ‘Have a nice day.’ I’m not playing a trick on people. Most people see my effort and my courage and respond positively.”
TTC drivers now recognize Cho and welcome him onboard. In a statement, TTC CEO Mandeep Lali said, “Everyone could use a little more joy in their life, including on their commute, and these posts certainly convey that sentiment (情绪).”
Mayor Olivia Chow echoed that feeling, saying that if everyone did what Cho does for just one person on one bus ride each week, Toronto would feel a lot more like a neighbourhood.
Through courage, kindness, and consistency, Minjae Cho is showing that small moments of human connection can make a very big city feel a little warmer.
24. How does Minjae Cho make Toronto a friendlier place?
A. By giving gifts to commuters. B. By speaking kind words to strangers.
C. By helping TTC drivers work. D. By teaching people social confidence.
25. Why does Cho use Meta glasses to record his interactions?
A. They cost less than phones. B. They feel less disturbing.
C. They take clearer videos. D. TTC drivers like them.
26. What is Lali’s attitude towards Cho’s behaviour on public transport?
A. Approving. B. Doubtful. C. Critical. D. Unconcerned.
27. What does the text convey?
A. Small connections warm big Toronto. B. Cho needs more people’s help.
C. Big cities lack human courage. D. Kindness is hard to keep.

British scientists say they have solved a mystery involving Stonehenge, the world-famous stone monument in Wiltshire, England. The scientists reported this week that they have identified where many of Stonehenge’s large stones, called megaliths, came from. Thousands of years ago, people used such stones to erect markers, monuments and other structures.
The researchers said part of one megalith helped solve the mystery. The small piece of stone had been kept in the US for over 40 years. Chemical testing suggests that most of Stonehenge’s megaliths, known as sarsens, came from an area called West Woods, 25 kilometres away from the ancient monument, the researchers said. People set up the sarsens at Stonehenge 4,000 years ago. The largest sarsen is 9.1 metres tall. The heaviest weighs 30 tons.
David Nash of the University of Brighton led the study, which was published in the journal Science Advances. He said that researchers still do not know how people moved the stones to Stonehenge.
“Given the size of the stones, they must have either been dragged or moved on rollers,” Nash added, “We don’t know the exact route but at least we now have a starting point and an endpoint.” Stonehenge also has smaller stones, called bluestones. Experts believe these stones came from Pembrokeshire in Wales, 250 kilometres away. A sarsen core sample, taken during repair work in the late 1950s, gave important information about Stonehenge’s origins.
The core sample was given to a man named Robert Phillips. Phillips worked for the company that was repairing the monument. Phillips took the sample with permission when he moved to the US in 1977. Phillips returned it to Britain for research in 2018. He died in 2024. The researchers studied very small pieces of the sample to find where it came from. It was similar to sandstone found at West Woods and all but two of the Stonehenge sarsens. Nash hopes the finding will help people better understand the hard work that went into building Stonehenge.
28. What does the underlined word “erect” in Paragraph 1 mean?
A. Cut. B. Build. C. Adjust. D. Crash.
29. What can we learn about the sarsen core sample?
A. Robert Phillips took it to the US without permission.
B. It was taken when repairing Stonehenge in the 1950s.
C. It was studied only after Phillips died in 2024.
D. It was totally different from West Woods’ sandstone.
30. Why does Nash value the new finding?
A. It proves bluestones are from Wales.
B. It shows an easy way to test stone origins.
C. It helps find the exact moving route of sarsens.
D. It lets people know more about building Stonehenge.
31. What is the main idea of the text?
A. How sarsens of Stonehenge were moved.
B. What resulted in the changes of Stonehenge.
C. A core sample was kept in the US for over 40 years.
D. Scientists found megaliths’ origin of Stonehenge.

Scientists say they have identified a chemical released by locusts (蝗虫) that causes the insects to join in huge groups. On their own, locusts are mostly harmless. However, when gathering, they can become highly destructive. The new finding could lead to new methods to prevent locusts from joining to destroy huge areas of crops.
A recent study in Nature identifies a pheromone (信息素) believed to cause the insect’s swarming (聚集的) behaviour. A pheromone is a chemical produced by an animal that influences another animal of the same kind. The pheromone, 4VA, was found in the world’s most widespread locust, the migratory locust. It is released from the insect’s back legs and sensed by other locusts’ antennae (触须). The pheromone powerfully drew locusts of both sexes and all ages, and was produced when just four to five locusts came together. Migratory locusts live in Asia, Africa, Australia and New Zealand. They attack crops, and such invasions (入侵) can cause major food shortages.
Lead researcher Le Kang is with the Chinese Academy of Sciences’ Institute of Zoology. Kang said further research is needed to see if 4VA exists in other species, like the desert locust, which is currently destroying crops in Africa and the Middle East.
Chemicals commonly used to break up locust swarms raise human health and safety concerns. Identifying 4VA could lead to new control methods. Kang said a chemical could block 4VA’s effects to prevent swarming. A manmade 4VA might also attract locusts into traps to be killed. Locusts could also get genetic changes to not react to 4VA, Kang added. Such locusts could be released to build wild non-swarming populations.
Leslie Vosshall, head of Rockefeller University’s Laboratory, said one of the most exciting developments would be finding a chemical that could block the reception of 4VA. Vosshall noted there are still several unknowns about the research. These include whether 4VA is the only cause of swarm formation, and whether other locust species respond similarly to the compound.
32. What can we infer about locust swarming?
A. It starts when a single locust releases 4VA.
B. It only happens to migratory locusts in Asia.
C. It makes locusts more destructive than when alone.
D. It can be stopped by existing chemicals easily.
33. What is a possible new approach to controlling locusts?
A. Using 4VA to make locusts attack each other.
B. Cutting locusts’ back legs to stop 4VA release.
C. Blocking 4VA’s effects to stop swarming.
D. Changing genes to stop producing 4VA.
34. What does Leslie Vosshall believe?
A. Finding blockers for 4VA would be exciting.
B. The research has solved all locust swarm problems.
C. 4VA is definitely the only swarm cause.
D. No unknowns are left in the research.
35. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. Harmful Locusts Across the World B. Risks of Chemicals for Locusts
C. Ways to Kill Migratory Locusts D. 4VA: Key Chemical for Locust Swarming

Greening the Taklimakan Desert
The Taklimakan is China’s biggest desert. It covers 337,600 square kilometres and was once called the “Sea of Death”. It is very dry — only about 50 mm of rain falls each year, while much more water dries up. ___36___
China started turning the desert green in 1978. That year, the Three-North Shelterbelt Project began. Its goal was to fight sand and protect land in northern China. ___37___ They worked hard to stop the desert from spreading further.
___38___ They laid straw (稻草) in squares on the sand. This held the sand down, so it wouldn’t blow away. They also planted tough plants like tamarisks (柽柳) and poplars (杨树). These plants can live with little water. Their roots grow deep, which helps keep the sand in place.
After years of work, great progress has been made. By November 2024, a green belt was finished. It goes around the desert. It is 3,046 kilometres long. That is the longest of its kind in the world. ___39___ This green belt has significantly reduced the frequency and intensity of sandstorms. It has also improved the local climate, making the air fresher and creating a more comfortable living environment.
The success helps local people a lot. It gives them a safer, nicer place to live. ___40___ It shows that with effort and clever ideas, even dry deserts can be turned green. This teaches us that humans can work with nature to make big changes, one small step at a time.
A. Its goal?
B. What has it done?
C. Many people joined in.
D. People used smart ways to grow plants.
E. It also sets a good example for the world.
F. Shifting sand dunes (沙丘) make life hard for plants and animals alike.
G. It is hard to believe how much the deserts have changed in recent years.

On January 16, an unexpected and dangerous incident happened in Virginia Beach, Virginia. It took place behind Bubba’s Restaurant on Shore Drive, where a woman accidentally drove her SUV into the ocean water. Little did she know that a group of kind strangers would soon come to her rescue and save her life from the rapidly sinking vehicle.
At that time, Jeremy Way, who had worked as a Navy aviation (航空) rescue swimmer for 17 years, was eating at Bubba’s Restaurant. He noticed the car hitting the water and immediately realized the danger. Without any hesitation, Jeremy jumped into the cold ocean to help the trapped driver. A restaurant employee saw what was happening and took a video of the heroic rescue process.
When Jeremy reached the sinking car, he shouted to the woman, telling her to unlock the door quickly. However, the woman was too frightened to calm down. “No, I’m not unlocking it. I don’t want to be here,” she cried. Jeremy tried his best to comfort her, saying, “We’ve all been there, just unlock it.” Unfortunately, the woman was so nervous that she couldn’t unlock the door no matter how hard she tried with her fingers.
Soon, other kind strangers joined Jeremy in the rescue. As the car was sinking faster and faster, two of them worked together with Jeremy to lift the woman out of the water just before the car disappeared completely under the waves.
After pulling the woman to safety on the shore, Jeremy held her tightly in his arms and kept comforting her while they waited for emergency medical services (EMS) to arrive. The woman was shaking violently with cold and fear, her lips turning blue, and she kept coughing out seawater. Jeremy wrapped his coat around her to keep her warm, patted her back gently, and kept saying, “It’s okay now; you’re safe. Help is coming soon.” The other strangers also gathered around, asking her if she felt better and trying their best to calm her down.

【答案】28. B 29. B 30. D 31. D

【答案】32. C 33. C 34. A 35. D
【解析】
【导语】文章介绍科学家发现蝗虫释放的化学物质4VA使其集群,并介绍该物质、新型治蝗手段及研究尚存疑问。

【答案】(范文 1)
One possible version:
A Good Laugh Is Sunshine in a House
A good laugh is like sunshine in a house, brightening the mood and making everyone feel warm inside. It has the power to turn a dull afternoon into a cheerful memory.
One summer evening, my friends and I tried cooking together for the first time. Everything went wrong — the pasta was too salty, the salad dressing was too sour, and the cookies were burnt. Instead of getting upset, we started laughing at our mistakes. The more we laughed, the better the food seemed to taste. That night, we didn’t just share a meal; we shared a moment of pure joy, proving that laughter truly is the sunshine that lights up our lives.
(范文2)
One possible version:
A Good Laugh Is Sunshine in a House
A good laugh is just like sunshine in a house — it warms our hearts, eases worries and brings people closer. It’s not a meaningless sound but a kind of power that helps us get through difficult moments.
Last week, my group did a science experiment about plants. We failed twice because we mixed up the materials, and everyone felt frustrated. Suddenly, my partner laughed at himself for writing the wrong notes, showing us his messy paper. We all laughed, and the bad mood was gone. We calmed down, checked the notes carefully, and finally succeeded.
Laughter gives us courage and strength. It truly makes our daily life brighter and warmer.

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version:
Soon, the ambulance sirens (警报器) were heard. The EMS team rushed over, checked the woman’s condition carefully, and provided her with first-aid treatment to stabilize her. Jeremy stepped back, still holding his coat, and explained the whole rescue process to the paramedics. The woman, now a little calmer, nodded weakly, grateful for the strangers’ help. They watched as the ambulance drove away, knowing the woman would be safe soon. Later, Jeremy went home to change his wet clothes, but his heart was still filled with the sense of relief that came from saving a life.
A week later, the woman fully recovered and met Jeremy in Bubba’s Restaurant. She held his hand tightly with tears in her eyes and said, “Thank you so much for saving my life. That day I was so scared and helpless, and I even thought I would die. If it weren’t for you and those kind strangers, I wouldn’t be here today.” Jeremy smiled and patted her hand gently, saying, “Don’t mention it. It’s what any good person would do. I’m just glad you’re safe now.” The woman was determined to cherish her hard-won second life and pass on this kindness to others.
