M: The summer vacation in New Delhi begins in May 1st every year. Much before it began we started planning how to spend it. I suggested that we should go to Shillong. But my sister insisted that we see Darjeeling. My father decided that we would go to both places with one month’s stay at each place.
So, it was decided that we would be going first to Shillong and then to Darjeeling. We left the New Delhi Railway Station four days after the vacation began. It was a very long and tiring journey. The train reached Guwahati in the evening.
The next day, early in the morning we drove to Shillong. We stayed there for nearly a month in the hotel. The climate was no doubt cool and pleasant, but there were very few places of interest.
We left Shillong on June 4th. On our way to Darjeeling, we traveled by train. We saw thick forests and beautiful tea gardens. We reached Darjeeling at about noon. We took a taxi and went to a hotel where reservations had been earlier arranged by my father. One day we went to the Tiger Hills by taxi at 4 a.m. to enjoy the famous sunrise. It was a wonderful sight which we had never seen before. And that was the last day of our vacation.

As we mediate conflicts (调解冲突) between students in schools, we are discovering that the conflicts affect many more people than just themselves.Their brothers and sisters might be concerned, as well as occasionally their parents, guardians (监护人), aunts, and uncles. This means that while we can do a lot of work with the students themselves, the issue we are trying to address is much deeper and needs to include more people in the conversations.
Two mediators of the Center for Conflict Resolution (CCR) had a case that concerned four students and their five guardians.During the beginning parts of the mediation, some of the adults in the room started to become heated and protective of their children.A grandmother had a confronta-tion (对抗) with one of the moms. The two parties were separated by CCR mediators, who then gave them time to cool off. Then, CCR staff invited everyone in the room to take a moment to concentrate on the task at hand.As a group, they reviewed the guidelines and actually added some that addressed why the adults were feeling so defensive.
Then, something unbelievable happened: The grandmother and the mom who were upset with each other earlier apologized to each other. They each said they had no issue with each other after hearing the other's point of view. They hugged and agreed to communicate in a more positive way.
After the students saw this, they asked to have some space. They left the room together and as the adults watched from the window, they hugged each other.Once they came back into the room, the students made a plan for how to communicate in the future using the example of their guardians.
The power of role models is far beyond what we know.By modeling how to be angry effectively, we can change how our children respond when they are angry too.

When we're studying a new language, many of us approach it with dread. If we make a mistake or say something wrong, we judge ourselves strictly. But as it turns out, however, we'd benefit by shifting (转移) our focus and worrying less about getting it right, according to Marianna Pascal, a communication skills trainer.
As a teacher who's spent 20 years in Malaysia helping people speak better English, Pascal notic-ed that some students didn't get a high language level but could still communicate very effectively. She remembers one specific student named Faisal.Despite not knowing much English, she says, "This guy could just sit and listen to anybody very calmly, clearly, and then he could respond and express his thoughts beautifully."
She also observed some students knew quite a bit of English but struggled to make themselves understood.Pascal noticed that a lot of these students' attitude towards English is like her daughter's attitude towards playing the piano.Pascal says her daughter hated piano and hated practicing, because she was afraid of being wrong. To her, her success in piano was measured by how few mistakes she made.
Then she shared her experience in a cafe. The person sitting next to her was playing a game while his friends watched, and he just wasn't a very good player. But at the same time, she saw something amazing.Even though this guy was terrible and his friends were watching him, there was no embarrassment or shyness. There was no feeling of being judged.Instead, he focused complete-ly on the task at hand.Pascal says, "I suddenly realized that this is it.This is the same attitude that people like Faisal have when they speak English."
Pascal believes that speaking a language isn't like those exams many of us had to take in grade school, where a tiny mistake would result in a big red "×" from the teacher. In the real world, what matters is whether we can make ourselves understood. She says, "If you want to speak English well, don't focus on yourself but focus on the other person and the goal you want to achieve."
28.What does the underlined word "dread" mean in paragraph 1?
A.Fear. B.Doubt. C.Curiosity. D.Confidence.
29.Why does Pascal mention her daughter?
A.To provide some advice. B.To offer some details.
C.To make clear a reason. D.To present a fact.
30.What did Pascal see from the man playing a game?
A.Never minding others' opinions. B.Not judging a person too soon.
C.Improving through practicing. D.Playing a game with patience.
31.What might Pascal agree with?
A.It is important for teachers to encourage students in exams.
B.It is OK to make small mistakes in speaking a language.
C.Language has to be fluently spoken in daily life.
D.Language is an art difficult to fully master.
D
While screen time is known to affect sleep, new research suggests that interactive (互动的) activities, such as texting friends or playing video games, put off and reduce the time spent asleep to a greater degree than passive (被动的) screen time like watching television, especially for teens.
The team studied the daytime screen-based activities of 475 teenagers using daily surveys. They asked the teens how many hours they had spent that day communicating with friends through social media and how many hours they spent playing video games, surfing the internet and watching television or videos. Finally, the researchers asked if they had joined in any of these activities in the hour before bed.
Next, the team measured their sleep time for one week. The researchers found that the teens spent an average of two hours per day communicating with friends via social media, about 1.3 hours playing video games, less than an hour surfing the internet and about 1.7 hours watching television or videos. For every hour throughout the day that they used screens to communicate with friends, they fell asleep about 11 minutes later averagely. For every hour to play video games, they fell asleep about 9 minutes later. Those who talked, texted or played games in the hour before bed lost the most sleep: about 30 minutes later.
Interestingly, David, lead author of the study, said the team found no obvious relations between passive screen-based activities and sleep."It could be that passive activities are less mentally exciting than interactive activities," said Anne, co-author of the study."It's a tricky situation," she said."These screen tools are really important to everyone nowadays, so it's hard to put a limit on them, but if you're really looking out for a teenager's health and well-being, you might consider limiting the more interactive activities, especially in the hour before bed."
32.Which of the following belongs to interactive screen activities?
A.Seeing movies. B.Watching videos. C.Texting friends. D.Surfing the internet.
33.Who might lose the most sleep according to the text?
A.Lucy who watched a three-hour movie before going to bed.
B.Jack who had a 30-minute video chat with his brother before bed.
C.Sam who played computer games for two hours throughout the day.
D.Amy who chatted with her friends on WeChat for one hour in the morning.
34.What does the underlined word "tricky" mean in paragraph 4?
A.frightening. B.tough. C.hopeful. D.encouraging.
35.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Screen time activities cut down our sleep hours.

The Bai people mainly live in and around Yunnan's famous Dali region. 36 The San Dao Cha or Three Courses of Tea ceremony is perhaps the finest example of their hospitality (好客).
The first course begins by putting bitter (苦的) tea leaves in a pot over a small open fire. When the leaves turn brown, then boiled water is added to the pot.As the water is added, it creates such a loud sound that this course is commonly referred to as “Lei Xiang Cha” or “Thunderous Tea”.This process produces a small amount of tea that has a pleasant smell. 37 .
After all that bitterness, you'll be glad that the second course is a sweet tea! It's made by first adding a kind of cow's milk cheese to the tea cup, along with tea leaves, brown sugar, etc. 38 .And then the tea is offered to the guest. This tea is more like a soup but sweet!
The third course is achieved by mixing Sichuan pepper, honey and slices of ginger (姜片) with a hot drink of Cangshan Xue green tea. 39 What's more, the tea is spicy (辛辣的) and has a clear aftertaste that makes it known as "Hui Wei Cha" or "Reflection Tea".
40 First you experience bitterness, then you feel happiness after defeating difficulties, and finally you reflect on your past.In terms of the stages of life, a young person goes through many challenges, a middle-aged person feels the sweetness of achievement, and an elderly person recollects their experiences.
A.It's better to drink it when it is warm.
B.Boiling water is then poured into the cup.
C.The three types of tea reflect the course of life.
D.Thus, the tea has all the tastes of the previous courses.
E.Drinking tea is important for the traditional Bai's way of life.
