Dear Tom,
I have learned that you are facing some problems, so I am writing to help you. Here are some of my suggestions.
First of all, having a good study plan can really help you make better use of your time. If so, you can make sure you have time to relax and sleep enough. It’s important to stay healthy. As for making friends, why not try joining some clubs or groups? It’s a good way to meet people who share your interests. Also, remember, a smile can go a long way. It sounds like your parents are very busy, but I’m sure they care about you a lot. It’s better to talk with them about how you’re feeling so that they can understand you better.
I really hope the advice can be helpful to you. I hope everything will be better soon.
Yours,
Li Hua

One night, my older brother Tommy and I started fighting in the kitchen. He said I was weak and silly. I felt really hurt, so I ran to my room and shut the door. I sat on my bed and cried.
About 20 minutes later, I heard Mom walking outside. She knocked on my door and asked in a low voice, “Kevin, do you want to talk with me?” I didn’t answer. I was too sad to speak. She tried again. Still, I said nothing.
Then I saw a piece of paper slip under my door. It said, “If you don’t want to talk, we can write notes to each other.” I read it but still didn’t want to reply. I just sat in the dark, feeling sad.
Half an hour later, I finally picked up a pen. I wrote down everything that was in my heart. My note said, “No one in this family loves me. I am not the youngest or the oldest, and I am not the smartest. Tommy thinks I am too weak, and Dad wishes he had another Kevin who is better at basketball. You’re never around to even notice me.” I pushed the note out under the door.
Soon, Mom wrote back: “Kevin, I do love you, and everyone in this family loves you.”
I was still crying softly. A few minutes later, I wrote another note: “Thanks!” She asked, “For what?” I replied, “For loving me.”

Can animals predict(预测) earthquakes? This question has interested scientists for a long time. Many stories from around the world say animals act strangely before earthquakes happen.
One famous example happened in China in 1975. In the city of Haicheng, people noticed many animals behaving unusually. Snakes came out of their holes in the middle of winter. Normally, snakes hibernate(冬眠) during cold weather, so this was very strange. Chickens refused to go into their coops(鸡笼). Dogs barked for no reason. Cows and horses seemed nervous and tried to escape(逃跑) from their fences.
The government noticed these unusual signs and ordered people to move outside immediately. Just hours later, a huge earthquake struck the city! Many buildings fell down, but most people were safe because of government’s action. This event made people believe that animals really can sense when a disaster is coming.
Scientists have several ideas about how animals might do this. Some think animals can feel small ground shaking that humans can’t feel. Other scientists think animals are able to feel underground air or gas changes before earthquakes. Animals also have much better hearing than humans, so they might hear sounds that we cannot hear.
However, not all scientists agree that animals can predict earthquakes. In their opinion, lots of different reasons can lead to animals’ strange behaviors. Sometimes what seems like a warning sign is just normal animal behavior. More research is needed to understand this mystery.
