(2025·江苏南通三调)To see Garnett Puett's latest sculpture at the Hammer Museum, you have to enter a dark room protected by a series of heavy curtains.Inside, glowing red light lights up a glass cage.Within the cage are three human figures with a large group of insects crawling over them. The bees move slowly over the faces of the figures. The colony of bees is so thick in places; it looks like fur (毛皮) growing on the statues—fur that moves.
“Woah.”“I've never seen.” Visitors say as they enter the silent room.
Puett has been making his “apisculptures”,using metal, beeswax(蜂蜡)and colonies of live bees, for four decades now. It's art with a purpose: Puett wants to remind viewers of the power and creativity of bees, whose survival is under threat around the world.“It's sort of subconscious advertising,” Puett said.“Bees are good.”
In the 1980s,when Puett's bee sculptures first became an art world hit, people just thought he was a guy playing with bees.Actually, his use of bees came from a deep family tradition. He grew up as a fourth-generation beekeeper, whose family had worked with bees since the 1700s.His great-grandfather raised queen bees, passing the business down to his son and grandson.Puett worked on those farms as a teenager, starting with the simplest tasks. His bee farm experience has resulted in precision in the art he makes with bee colonies.
In the four decades since, the eco-artist withdrew somewhat from the art world. He moved to Hawaii, where he and his family have spent three decades running an organic honey farm. The work is challenging and labor intensive. That work has put him on the front lines of dealing with threats to bee populations.Foreign species have killed numerous bees on his family's farm, shrinking the number of surviving beehives (蜂巢) from 4,000 to about 2,000 in the past 15 years.
“People used to call me up really mad saying words I can't repeat if the hives were bothering them,” relates Puett with a laugh.“But since we lost half the bee population within two years, people are more aware of their importance and are far more understanding and appreciative. That's been the one bright side to all this difficulty.”
1.What do visitors think of Puett's bee sculpture?
A.It is cruel. B.It is creative.

答案 D
B
(2025·河北石家庄质量检测)A third of the Arctic's tundra(北极冻原),forests and wetlands have become a source of carbon emissions(排放),a new study has found,as global heating ends thousands of years of carbon storage.
For thousands of years,Arctic land ecosystems have acted as a deep-freeze,holding potential emissions in the tundra. But ecosystems in the region are releasing more CO2 into the atmosphere with rising temperatures,a study published in Nature Climate Change concluded.
More than 30% of the region is a source of CO2,according to the analysis, rising to 40% when emissions from wildfires are included.By using data from 200 study sites between 1990 and 2020,the research demonstrates how the Arctic's tundra, forests and wetlands are being transformed by rapid warming.
The shift is occurring despite the Arctic becoming greener.“In one place where I work in Alaska, when the tundra unfreezes, the plants that absorb CO2 grow more,so you can sometimes get an uptick in carbon storage,” Sue Natalia, the lead researcher said.“But the tundra continues to unfreeze and the microbes(微生物) take over. You can visually see the changes in the landscape.”
There is a growing concern about the natural processes that regulate the Earth's climate, which are being affected by rising temperatures.Together, the planet's oceans, forests, soils and other natural carbon sinks absorb about half of all human emissions, but there are signs that these sinks are under stress.
The Arctic ecosystem has been gathering carbon for thousands of years, helping cool the atmosphere. In a warming world, the researchers say,its carbon cycle is beginning to change and needs better monitoring.Dr Anna Virkkala, the author of the study, said,“The carbon in the Arctic soil is close to half of the Earth's soil carbon pool, much more than in the atmosphere. This huge pool should ideally stay in the ground. But now, rising temperatures are speeding the breakdown of plant and animal remains, which releases stored carbon back into the air as greenhouse gases like CO2,creating a cycle that fuels even more warming.”
5.What's the main reason for the release of carbon from Arctic soils?
A.Tundra defrosting.
B.Wildfire erupting.
C.Tree over-cutting.
D.Wetland disappearing.
根据第二段中的“For thousands of years,Arctic land ecosystems have acted as a deep-freeze...But ecosystems in the region are releasing more CO2 into the atmosphere with rising temperatures”以及第四段中的“But the tundra continues to unfreeze and the microbes take over.”
答案 A
6.What does the underlined word “uptick” in paragraph 4 mean?
A.Boost. B.Loss.
C.Limit. D.Release.
根据第四段中的“when the tundra unfreezes, the plants that absorb CO2 grow more,so you can sometimes get an uptick in carbon storage”并结合常识可知,当冻原解冻时,吸收二氧化碳的植物生长得更多,所以在这种情况下碳储存量应该是有所增加。
答案 A
7.What can we infer about the Arctic's soil carbon pool according to Dr Anna Virkkala?
A.It has less carbon than the air.
B.It ought to be stored in the tundra.
C.It can break down organic matter.
D.It is less affected by global warming.
根据第六段中Anna Virkkala博士说的话“The carbon in the Arctic soil is close to half of the Earth's soil carbon pool, much more than in the atmosphere. This huge pool should ideally stay in the ground.”
8.What is the main idea of the text?
A.Arctic greening cuts carbon emissions.
B.More carbon is being released in Arctic.
C.Arctic carbon storage is growing rapidly.
D.Extreme climate makes Arctic inhabitable.
C
(2025·广东六校第二次联考)Researchers at the University of Exeter in England have crafted a device that employs artificial intelligence (AI) to detect Asian wasps (黄蜂).AI refers to the capability of computers to learn from experiences and execute tasks swiftly that would typically require a significant time investment from humans.
Asian wasps are considered an invasive species, indicating that they are not native to the UK and can disrupt our ecosystem—the environment and its living organisms. These wasps feed on local insects and pose a significant threat to honeybees with a single wasp capable of killing up to 50 honeybees in a day.
The innovative system, named VespAI,uses a sponge cloth soaked with a liquid that attracts wasps.Once the wasps are drawn in,an automatic camera takes pictures of them. The AI then analyzes the photos to determine whether the insect is an Asian wasp or a European wasp, which is a native species.
If an Asian wasp is spotted,a notification is sent right away to the researcher's phone or computer.VespAI acts as an early-warning system, allowing for the detection of any Asian wasps that may have entered a new area of the UK.Its high precision helps authorities respond quickly to follow the wasps, find their nests, and get rid of them before they can reproduce.
There is growing concern among experts that Asian wasps may have made a lasting home in the UK rather than being merely transient or accidental arrivals.Currently, the UK's way of dealing with Asian wasps depends on people seeing them, recognizing them, and reporting them. However, many of these reports turn out to be other kinds of insects.
Dr.Thomas O'Shea-Wheller,who worked on VespAI,said this new system won't mistake other insects for Asian wasps or miss them when they come around.VespAI has been tested on the island of Jersey and will be tried in other places this year.
9.What does paragraph 3 mainly focus on?
A.VespAI's design and operation.
B.The effectiveness of wasp traps.
C.VespAI's influence on the ecosystem.
D.Traditional wasp detecting methods.
答案 A
10.What does the underlined word “transient” mean in paragraph 5?
A.Widespread. B.Temporary.
C.Frequent. D.Dangerous.
11.Which statement would Dr.Thomas probably agree with?
A.VespAI will help manage wasp invasions.
B.VespAI requires constant human inspection.
C.The current reporting system is highly effective.
D.The current methods fail to identify Asian wasps.
故选A。
答案 A
12.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.AI Disrupts the Survival of Insects
B.The Threat of Asian Wasps to Bees
C.AI Technology Boosts Wasp Detection
D.The Impact of AI on Insect Identification
通读全文,尤其是根据第一段第一句话“Researchers...have crafted a device that employs artificial intelligence (AI) to detect Asian wasps.”
Ⅱ.七选五
(2025·广东广州模考)Wildfires can bring seemingly unavoidable destruction. So once the fire is put out, people begin to assess how to rebuild their homes.__13__ Researchers believe climate change is making fires burn hotter and longer than ever before, causing more severe damage to the land.In the wake of wildfires,we have to act as caretakers for the earth. We need to nurture damaged ecosystems back to health.__14__
Trees can be restorative.Trees can be protective. For example, the dangers associated with a wildfire don't always end when the flames go out.__15__That's because the extra dry ground can liquify more easily if exposed to rainfall. But when trees are in the ground, their roots can help stabilize the soil. This reduces the risk of landslides.
__16__Over time, this process helps slow the worsening effects of climate change.Researchers say climate change is one of the root causes behind the increased frequency and severity of wildfires and other natural disasters.By using trees to control the carbon released into the air,we can also limit the amount of climate-related disasters.
There's a lot of science behind the benefits a tree can bring.__17__In communities struck by wildfires, people's sense of security is as damaged as the land.To move forward, people need a reminder that we can start again. When we plant a tree,we're making a meaningful investment in the future.Every time new roots are planted,it's an affirmation of the desire to strengthen community pride.Standing trees signal that we have not lost hope.
A.But there's an emotional factor here,too.
B.Unfortunately,that process can take years.
C.Many animals would die in the wildfire, too.
D.And these benefits have been already proved.
E.The risk of a landslide increases after a wildfire.
F.Planting trees is one of the best ways we have available.
G.Trees can also store carbon, helping limit emissions into the atmosphere.
13.解析 上文“Wildfires can bring seemingly unavoidable destruction....assess how to rebuild their homes.”(野火能带来看似无法避免的破坏。 B项中的“that process”指代上文中的“rebuild their homes”。
答案 B
15.解析 上文“the dangers associated with a wildfire don't always end when the flames go out”(野火带来的危险并不总是随着火焰熄灭而结束)警示灾后风险;下文“That's because the extra dry ground can liquify more easily if exposed to rainfall”(这是由于过干的土地遇到降雨更易液化)解释山体滑坡的原因,故可推知空处与下文构成因果关系,E项“野火过后,山体滑坡的风险会增加”承上提出具体风险,符合语境。
根据下文“Over time,this process helps slow the worsening effects of climate change”(随着时间的推移,这一过程有助于减缓气候变化的恶化带来的影响)可知,此处应阐释树木对气候变化的积极作用。
17.解析 上文“There's a lot of science behind the benefits a tree can bring”(树木带来的益处背后蕴含着丰富的科学道理)讲述树木有诸多科学层面的益处;下文“Standing trees signal that we have not lost hope”(矗立的树木表明我们没有失去希望)表明树木对人的精神层面的价值;故A项“然而,这其中还包含一份情感因素”引出下文,提出另外的情感因素,But标志此处与上句形成话题上的转折关系,too标志此处与上文构成意义上的并列关系,空后句“In communities struck by wildfires, people's sense of security is as damaged as the land”(在灾后社区,人们的安全感与土地一样受到重创)则承接A项,补充说明情感因素的具体体现。
