Two Teens reporters talked with Li—a geologist to learn about his work.
Zhang: What do you do every day? Are you often out doing field research? Li: I do go into the field quite often and it’s the best part of my job! My coworkers and I explore deep into the mountains and rivers. We watch geological phenomena(现象) and collect rock samples (样品). However, we spend most of our time in the labs. There, we use tools like microscopes(显微镜) to study the samples and learn more about Earth.
Guo: How can geology(地质学) help with both developing the economy(经济) and protecting nature?
Li: This is now a big part of what we do. First, by checking soil(土壤) and water, we can find out pollution early. Then we take action to stop it. Recently, robotic dogs have become famous online! A robotic dog being tested for rubbish transport(运输) draws the attention of visitors at Mount Taishan. Like “porters(搬运工)”, they carried things and rubbish during tests at Mount Taishan in late October.
In 2023, over 8 million people visited Mount Taishan. They created about 24,000 tons of waste, according to Taishan Cultural Tourism Group. But the mountain is rocky(多岩石的) and the paths are narrow, so large machines can’t work there. Cleaners have to carry the rubbish down the mountain on their backs. This is terribly hard work for the cleaners. They may get hurt on the way down the mountain with such heavy loads. What’s more, it is tiring and takes a longer time to clean up the rubbish.
This is why the robotic dogs come in! Each dog is able to carry 30 to 40 kilograms. It can stay balanced and move around things in its way. During the tests, the robot could reach the top of the mountain in two hours, while the average(平均的) time for adults without carrying anything is about four hours. The robotic dog can work for four to six hours on a full charge(充电).
Still, the company that made the robotic dog says there are still a few things that need to be improved, such as increasing the height of its storage box(储物盒).

In smart cities of China, you may turn on a light just by talking to it or you can visit different places in a self-driving car. What about smart cities outside China? Let’s take a look at some of them.
London, the UK
London has many new ways to use data(数据). One of its creative examples is an app showing a clean air route(路线) map of the city. The map has three different-coloured routes—red, orange and green. If people have to go out on a day with bad air quality(质量), they can find out the route with the cleanest air.
Singapore
The “Garden City” has smart ways to make the city child-friendly. In some libraries, sensors(传感器) and projectors(投影仪) help kids listen to stories in cool ways. When a teacher tells a story about a tiger and makes a pose of the animal, a picture of a tiger will be shown on the wall. Kids will also hear a tiger roar(吼叫). This makes the stories more lively.
New York City, the US
The city government makes its data open to all local people. With the data, people can get the information they need on an official website(官方网站) or via apps. For example, they can find out where the bike lanes(自行车道) are in the city and the types of trees in their neighbourhoods.
Berlin, Germany
In Berlin, passive housing(被动式住宅) is a popular way to help save energy. A passive house usually has thick walls and windows. Also, the biggest windows usually face south. This way, more sunlight can go into the house. When it is 20 degrees below zero outside, people inside the house can still keep warm without turning on a heater or an air conditioner(空调).

Students at Sanhe Township Primary School in Chongqing enjoy playing soccer. It is an important part of their school life. Every student at the school has a soccer lesson once a week. Students of all age groups play soccer matches every month.
The school is located in the mountains and has poor teaching resources(教学资源). Most of its students are left-behind children(留守儿童), and very few of them can go to high school or university. To help students have a good future, ten years ago, Sun Xiaoming, the headteacher of the school, set up a girls’ soccer team. Primary school students are short and thin. It’s difficult for them to play basketball or volleyball. But soccer is different. It is cheap and easy to learn. Students can play it in teams on the playground, or practise it alone at home. So soccer is the perfect choice for the students.

of them get into great middle or high schools. Some of them go into soccer clubs and become professional(职业的) players.
