课时分层检测(十七) What an adventure! Ⅰ. 阅读理解 A (2025·湖北省黄冈中学第三次模拟) Officials in San Francisco are asking the public to help choose a waste container among several models proposed for mass deployment (部署) in the California city. It is proving to be a costly project. One of the trash cans under consideration cost more than $20,000 and took four years to make. San Francisco began its search for the perfect public trash can in 2018. Officials decided it was time to replace the more than 3,000 cans that have served the city’s streets for almost 20 years. The current trash cans open too widely, they say, permitting people to reach in. The cans also break a lot, requiring repairs. Sometimes people push them over or mark them with words and pictures. Sometimes, the cans are set on fire. Last month, the city deployed 15 made-to-order trash cans and 11 off-the-shelf trash cans. Attached to each was a QR code from which people could answer questions about the individual can. The city government project also created interactive maps so people can find the different models to consider. The so-called Soft Square model trash can was priced at $20,900, making it the most expensive model on the streets. It is made of light steel. A press of a pedal opens the can for hands-free operation. It has dividers so waste can be separated from materials for recycling, like aluminum and glass. City officials say, however, that the government will not pay more than three-thousand per can once a model is chosen for mass production. Beth Rubenstein is a spokeswoman for San Francisco’s Department of Publie Works. “We live in a beautiful city, and we want(the trash can)to be functional and cost-effective, but it needs to be beautiful,” she said. But the good looks of the shiny new trash cans have not protected them from vandalism and other disrespect. Three weeks after being deployed, several are overflowing, or covered in orange and white graffiti or dirty from coffee spills. Diane Torkelson volunteers on a team that removes trash from the streets near her home. She recently visited three of the proposed trash cans. Two were already full when the group arrived to inspect them, she said. “If the trash can is full, it’s of no use, no matter how well it was designed,” she said. 1. Why did San Francisco decide to replace the existing trash cans? A. They are damaged beyond repair. B. They are too small to hold the city's waste. C. They have outlived their useful life. D. They are difficult to clean and maintain. 2. What is paragraph 3 mainly about? A. The urban can replacement project. B. The trash can QR code campaign. C. The city-wide mapping initiative. D. The pedal-operated container program. 3. What does the underlined word “vandalism” in the last paragraph mean? A. Destruction of property. B. Theft. C. Illegal invasion. D. Tagging. 4. What is Diane’s attitude towards the new trash cans? A. Positive. B. Negative. C. Neutral. D. Indifferent. B (2026·湖南邵阳联考) Antarctica, the southernmost continent on Earth and a frozen continent, remains an mysterious and original land, buried in ice and surrounded by a vast, inhospitable ocean, which often shrouded (隐藏) in mystery and intrigue. It holds a wealth of scientific wonders waiting to be explored. With the aid of cutting-edge technology, researchers have delved into its icy depths, uncovering the secrets of this remote and pristine (原始的) wilderness. At the forefront of Antarctic exploration are advanced satellite imaging systems. These orbiting wonders provide detailed maps of the continent’s surface, allowing scientists to monitor changes in ice coverage and track the movements of glaciers with unprecedented accuracy. Such data is crucial for understanding the impacts of climate change on Antarctica’s delicate ecosystem and predicting future sea-level rise. In addition to satellites, autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) play a key role in Antarctic research. These robotic submarines are equipped with an array of sensors and cameras, enabling them to navigate beneath the ice shelves and explore previously inaccessible regions. By collecting data on water temperature, salinity, and marine life, AUVs offer invaluable insights into the dynamics of Antarctic Ocean currents and the habitats of its unique marine species. Furthermore, drones have revolutionized scientific fieldwork in Antarctica. These unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are utilized for conducting aerial surveys of vast ice sheets and capturing high-resolution imagery of remote locations. By providing researchers with real-time data and imagery, drones facilitate rapid assessments of environmental changes and aid in the study of wildlife populations, from penguins to seals. Despite the remarkable advancements in technology, conducting research in Antarctica remains a huge challenge due to its extreme weather conditions and remote location. However, through cooperative efforts and innovative approaches, scientists continue to push the boundaries of exploration, uncovering the mysteries of Antarctica and advancing our understanding of the Earth’s climate system. 5. What technology is primarily used for monitoring changes in ice coverage in Antarctica? A. Drones. B. Submersible robots. C. Satellite imaging systems. D. Autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs). 6. What can be inferred from the fourth paragraph? A. Exploring and research on Antarctica is an easy task. B. Scientific fieldwork in Antarctica is hard to continue. C. Drones play a significant part in scientific fieldwork in Antarctica. D. Drones capture high-resolution imagery of remote locations. 7. What’s the author’s attitude towards the research in Antarctica? A. Objective. B. Subjective. C. Suspicious. D. Indifference. 8. What would be the most suitable title for the text? A. The Challenges of Antarctic Exploration B. Traditional Methods of Antarctic Research C. The Environmental Impact of Satellite Imaging D. The Technological Wonders of Exploring Antarctica Ⅱ. 七选五 (2026·浙江省杭州第二中学新高考模拟) Many people’s mood goes slightly down as the days are getting shorter. Even if you don’t suffer from SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder) —also called winter depression — you might feel different than just a few weeks ago. Does that sound familiar? ___9___ As Mirthy’s Laughter Yoga Leader, I strongly believe in the health benefits of laughter, which are indeed impressive. The most obvious gain is that it puts people in a good mood. We assess mood levels before and after the Laughter Yoga session. Many participants’ mood goes up by at least two points—and that’s without drugs or pills, just by “a little bit” of laughter. Dr Madan Kataria, who is a medical doctor and created Laughter Yoga, did quite a bit of research and found that laughter is a mild antidepressant (抗抑郁药) as it releases endorphins and serotonin. ___10___— again hormones and natural opiates (天然鸦片) play a big role in it — and without side effects. ___11___ It reduces the levels of stress hormones in our bodies. If you keep in mind that almost 90% of all illnesses are associated with stress and tension we hold in our body, laughter is an easy remedy, isn’t it? So there is some truth in the old saying: “Laughter is the best medicine” — well, at least it’s a start! Some people go to the gym first thing in the morning. If that’s not your thing, just keep in mind that laughter is an aerobic exercise (有氧运动) — probably with much more fun! ___12___ I could go on, but I’ll stop here. For more health benefits, check out the PubMed research database where you’ll find over 2, 600 references to laughter. ___13___ A. Just bring yourself an open mind. B. Laughter is also a great stress relief. C. If so, I have a possible solution for you! D. This is to support our oxygen intake even more. E. What’s more, laughter can be a natural pain killer. F Or maybe you can simply join us for the next Mirthy class. G. Research found that ten minutes of laughter equals thirty minutes on the rowing machine. Ⅲ. Heatherwick Studio recently built a greenhouse at the edge of the National Trust’s Woolbeding Gardens. This beautiful structure, named Glasshouse, is at the centre of a new garden that shows how the Silk Road influences English gardens even in modern times. The latest ____14____ (engineer) techniques are applied to create this protective ____15____(function) structure that is also beautiful. The design features ten steel “sepals” (萼片) made of glass and aluminium (铝). These sepals open on warm days ____16____(give) the inside plants sunshine and fresh air. In cold weather, the structure stays ____17____ (close) to protect the plants. Further, the Silk Route Garden around the greenhouse ____18____ (walk) visitors through a journey influenced by the ancient Silk Road, by which silk as well as many plant species came to Britain for ____19____ first time. These plants included modern Western ____20____ (favourite) such as rosemary, lavender and fennel. The garden also contains a winding path that guides visitors through the twelve regions of the Silk Road. The path offers over 300 plant species for visitors to see, too. The Glasshouse stands ____21____ a great achievement in contemporary design, to house the plants of the southwestern part of China at the end of a path retracing (追溯) the steps along the Silk Route ____22____ brought the plants from their native habitat in Asia to come to define much of the ____23____ (rich) of gardening in England. 课时分层检测(十七) What an adventure! Ⅰ. C 2. A 3. A 4. 根据文章第二段“The current trash cans open too widely, they say, permitting people to reach in. The cans also break a lot, requiring repairs. Sometimes people push them over or mark them with words and pictures. Sometimes, the cans are set on fire. (他们说,目前的垃圾桶开得太大,让人们可以伸手进去。垃圾桶也经常破损,需要修理。有时人们会把它们推倒,或者用文字和图片做标记。有时,这些垃圾桶会被点燃。)”可知旧的垃圾桶已经超过了使用期限,故选C项。 【2题详解】 主旨大意题。根据文章第三段“Last month, the city deployed 15 made-to-order trash cans and 11 off-the-shelf trash cans. Attached to each was a QR code from which people could answer questions about the individual can. The city government project also created interactive maps so people can find the different models to consider. (上个月,该市部署了15个定制垃圾桶和11个现成垃圾桶。每个垃圾桶上都附有一个二维码,人们可以通过这个二维码回答有关垃圾桶的问题。市政府的项目还制作了交互式地图,这样人们就可以找到不同的模型来考虑。)”可知第三段主要围绕着市政府的垃圾桶置换项目来展开,所以A项The urban can replacement project.
