Not too long ago, 41-year-old Tim Fisher flew in a small airplane close to the largest glacier (冰川) in Europe.
A glacier is a huge area of snow and ice that moves slowly down a mountain. In that environment, Fisher did two activities he loved, flying and taking photos. He tried to take photos of glaciers before some of them melted (融化).
Scientists say many glaciers are melting or getting smaller. The melting has gotten faster since the 1980s. For Fisher, this meant there was not enough time left. The melting pushed him to take photos of the glaciers before it was too late to do that.
As a child, Fisher lived next door to a small airport in New York. His grandfather was a pilot and took Fisher on plane rides when he was young. The old man told him, “Whatever you set your mind to, you can do it.” In the late 1990s, a friend told Fisher that the world’s glaciers were melting. Then he decided that one day he would fly to take photos of glaciers-in Europe.
Fisher flew a small plane which could carry two people. The plane felt like an old car. The weather was bad and very cold. The winds were too strong to fly. Taking photos was a big challenge. Fisher ran out of his money, so he had to look for people who would support his work. Fisher succeeded finally.
His action made people care more about glaciers. He believes his photos can be of great value to future people.

Before I was in Grade Three, I didn’t like to help others. I would get nervous and shy when someone asked me for help. Things changed when I was in Grade Four.
It was a cloudy morning. I was walking to school when I met a tall man. Carrying a long thin walking-stick(拐杖)and wearing sunglasses, he stood at the crossing. I found this a little strange as it was early in the morning and yet he was wearing sunglasses. But I crossed the road without thinking too much about it. Bikers, drivers, and walkers, we were all in a rush.
When I reached the other side and walked along the road, suddenly I heard cars and buses sounding their horns(喇叭). I turned around and saw that the man was in the middle of the road. It seemed that he was too scared to move. Just then, I realized that the man wasn’t able to see. Without thinking twice, I quickly ran back and helped him safely cross the road. The man turned his head to me and smiled, saying, “Thank you very much for your kind help.”
It made me feel good to hear those words. In fact, I felt so good that I asked him where he was going and if he needed more help. He told me that he was going to the market not far from my school. I walked the thankful man to the market and then left for my school.
From then on, I often tried to help people in need. And now, I volunteer to help out at the old people’s home in my neighbourhood every Sunday. Helping others really matters in my life. Being helpful makes me happy and I no longer find it nonsense.
