Having fun with Chinese
April 20 is the United Nations Chinese Language Day (联合国中文日). Now, about 210 million people have learned and used Chinese as a foreign language. Students in 90 countries can learn Chinese at school. Is learning Chinese difficult for foreigners? We asked two Chinese learners to share their stories.
Fun with tongue twisters
I’ve always been amazed by the tongue twisters (绕口令) in Chinese. English has its own tongue twisters, for example: “Sally sells seashells by the seashore.” But Chinese takes it a step forward with its use of tones (声调).
As an English speaker, I first learned Chinese through the use of pinyin. But as I found out, even when the letters in pinyin are the same, different tones can result in different Chinese words, like horse (马) vs mother (妈). But things get harder when this is used in tongue twisters! Can you say this one? Fourteen is fourteen, forty is forty; fourteen is not forty, forty is not fourteen.
Practicing Chinese with friends
Since I came to China in 2021, I’ve been using an APP called Hello Chinese. Reading the small stories on there is really helpful. I first read them with pinyin and the Chinese characters, and then I’ll read them again with just the characters.
Going out for dinner with my Chinese friends is another good way to learn. In a social situation, I’m a bit more confident (自信的) to practice speaking Chinese.
Recently, some friends visited China for the first time. They don’t know any Chinese, and I was happy to see that my Chinese was good enough to help as I introduced them to Beijing.
51. About 90 million people have learned Chinese as a foreign language now.
52. Patrick McCarthy has lots of fun with tongue twisters.
53. The same letters in Chinese pinyin always lead to the same Chinese words.
54. When David House practices Chinese on Hello Chinese, he first reads characters directly.
55. David House is more comfortable speaking Chinese now.

As the number of bees has fallen much in recent years, many countries are looking for ways to protect these lovely insects. The UK city of Leicester has a plan of its own.
The city has begun to turn its traditional bus stops into Living Roofs or Bee Bus Stops to attract (吸引) bees and other insects. Different from a traditional bus stop, a Bee Bus Stop has a small garden on top with flowers and grass. Every bus stop will help bring in more biodiversity (生物多样性) into the city and absorb (吸收) rainwater that falls on the roof, making it a greener and happier place for both animals and people to live.
A solar panel (太阳能电池板) is fixed on every bus stop to provide lighting wherever possible, which can cut energy use. Besides, building Bee Bus Stops will also help cool down the city by absorbing some of the heat during the summer months.
“We’d love to see the living roofs in every town and city across the UK and even across Europe, which will have a good influence on our planet,” an official said.
The new bus stops are part of Leicester’s “Bee Roads” program, which started in 2017. Till now, over 5.5 kilometers of roadside in the city has been planted with flowers to help make it a safe place for insects.
56. What’s the purpose of building Bee Bus Stops at the very beginning?
A. To protect insects. B. To cut the use of energy. C. To cool down the city.
57. What can solar panels do?
A. Attract bees. B. Take in rainwater. C. Provide lighting.
58. According to the official, what can we infer about Bee Bus Stops?
A. They may be canceled.
B. They may appear in other cities.
C. They will be seen only in Leicester.
59. What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 5 refer to?
A. The city. B. The bus stop. C. The small garden.
60. In which part of a newspaper can we probably read the passage?

Sugar is a sweet thing that is used to cook food and can make drinks sweet. And it is loved by most people. But not all sugar is healthy to us.
Naturally produced sugar, for example in fruit, is considered healthy. However, refined (精制的) sugar is not healthy and is added to many processed (加工过的) foods to make them taste better. To people’s surprise, this refined sugar can be found in many delicious foods like bread. Besides that, refined sugar has no value to our health and offers empty calories (卡路里). It also has no fiber (纤维素), unlike the natural sugar in fruit, so it is easy to eat a lot. Too many calories lead to putting on more weight. Too much sugar will also harm our teeth and we even get some diseases in our later life.
So what can we do about too much sugar, especially the hidden sugar in our diet? It seems that we can get some help from the government. It should regulate (控制) the amount of sugar that companies can add to foods. Next, schools should tell students about the health problems of eating too much sugar. What’s more, it is necessary for students to eat more vegetables and fruit with less sugar.
Although sugar is delicious, it still puts our future health at risk. It is important for young people to know about the danger of eating too much sugar.
61. Why is refined sugar added to many foods?
A. To make the foods fresher.
B. To make the foods healthier.
C. To make the foods more delicious.
62. How is fruit sugar different from refined sugar?
A. It has fiber. B. It is processed. C. It’s easy to eat a lot.
63. According to the passage, which of the followings probably has refined sugar?
A. Bread & cakes. B. Carrots & onions. C. Bananas & apples.
64. What does Paragraph 3 mainly tell us?
A. Examples of healthy eating.
B. Ways to control sugar in our diet.
C. Reasons for adding sugar to many foods.
65. What is important for young people according to the passage?
A. Eating no sugar. B. Eating more sugar. C. Eating proper sugar.
E

Straight or arched, thick or thin—eyebrows (眉毛) come in many shapes and sizes. But what are eyebrows even for? They don’t keep us warm like our hair, or help us breathe like our noses. So why do we have them? ____66____
Early humans had large brow ridges (眉骨). ____67____ Later, as the human face became smaller and flatter, our eyebrows helped us to express different feelings, as well as better understand others’ feelings. For example, a quick flash of the eyebrows... This is a sign that someone is willing to communicate with others, while pulling our eyebrows up in the middle is an expression of sympathy (同情). ____68____ just draw a simple face on a piece of paper and draw a line above the eyes. You can draw lines in different shapes and directions. You will find that it is very easy to show anger, fear or surprise on a face.
But this is not the only purpose of our eyebrows. ____69____ Their arched shape can help to move rain or sweat around to the sides of our faces, keeping our eyes dry. Together with our eyelashes (眼睫毛), eyebrows can also help to keep dust and other things out of our eyes.
____70____ In that case, some scientists believe that we would have developed some other facial feature to perform the same role. That could make us look quite different.
A. They can also protect our eyes.
B. What if we didn’t have eyebrows?
C. This helped them show their power.
D. If you still find this hard to understand,
E. Let’s take rolling one’s eyes as an example.
F. So far, no scientific research has found out the reason.
G. Scientists believe eyebrows helped us communicate better when we were still developing.
In spring, some people wear light T-shirts while others are in heavy down coats (羽绒服). It seems that people feel different temperatures on the same day. Why does this happen?
In fact, people don’t feel air temperatures directly. It is through the sensors (传感器) on our skin that we can feel cold, cool, warm, and hot temperatures. They help us decide whether to wear more or fewer clothes.
When our bodies are the same size, how much body fat we have may be different and it will influence how we feel temperatures. The more body fat one has, the warmer he or she feels. This is because the fat under the skin helps keep heat. For example, old people often feel colder than young people as the fat layers (层) under the skin get thinner with age.
Surprisingly, another reason is height. We need blood to move around our bodies to keep us warm. Since most people’s hearts are about the same size, it takes more time and energy for the blood to move around in taller people. So taller people might feel colder.
Metabolism (新陈代谢) also influences how we feel temperatures. It shows how fast our bodies use energy. People with a higher metabolism always feel hotter than others. This is because they produce more heat and may take more time to cool down. For example, people with more muscles (肌肉) often feel warmer.
71. How do we feel air temperatures?
_________________________________________________________________
72. What helps people keep heat?
_________________________________________________________________

G 67. C 68. D 69. A 70. B

G“Scientists believe eyebrows helped us communicate better when we were still developing.”(科学家认为,在我们仍在进化时,眉毛帮助我们更好地交流。)
C“This helped them show their power.”(这帮助他们显示力量。)
D“If you still find this hard to understand,”(如果你仍然觉得这很难理解,)引导读者通过动手实验来直观感受眉毛表达情绪的作用,与后文的实验说明形成自然的条件关系,承上启下。
A“They can also protect our eyes.”(它们还能保护眼睛。)
B“What if we didn’t have eyebrows?”(如果我们没有眉毛会怎样?)

例文
Notice
Dear visitors,
We’re happy to have you here! To keep our park beautiful and safe, please follow these important rules.
First, stay on marked paths. Do not enter areas with warning signs. This protects wildlife and keeps you safe. Second, keep the park clean. Put all rubbish into the bins. Do not leave any waste behind. Third, treat plants and animals with care. Do not pick flowers or feed wild animals. Human food may harm animals. Fourth, keep noise down. Loud sounds disturb animals and other visitors.
