B Ever since I was a little child, I have always liked learning words and expressions in other languages. When I was nine, I started studying English at school, and I loved it. I learned a lot about English words and grammar at school, and when I turned sixteen, I attended a program in Canada. I lived with a Canadian family for a whole year, and it was one of the best times of my life. Since it is also an official language in Canada, I started studying French during my stay. I studied hard, and it paid off. French is a beautiful language. After I returned to Brazil, I started studying Spanish. I think it is important for Brazilians to learn this language because, here in South America, most countries’ official language is Spanish. I loved learning this language, and thanks to that, I now have friends from Uruguay, Peru, and Argentina. Keeping in touch with these friends is a great way to practice the language. I am also learning Chinese and German. These languages are a bit more difficult for me, but being able to say even a few expressions of these languages is rewarding. Some people ask me why I spend so much time learning foreign languages. I always say there are many benefits. For instance, learning a foreign language improves your memory, introduces you to all kinds of information, helps you to communicate with people from different places and cultures and to make wonderful friends, provides you with insight into another way of thinking, makes you a more interesting person, and improves your chances of finding a good job. So, if you haven’t started studying a foreign language yet, my advice is: don’t put off until tomorrow what you can do today! 36. When did the writer start studying French? A. When he was eight. B. When he was nine. C. At the age of sixteen. 37. The underlined word “that” in Paragraph 2 refers to “________”. A. learning Spanish B. going to a program in Canada C. visiting South American countries 38. What does the underlined word “benefits” in Paragraph 4 mean in Chinese? A. 好处 B. 要求 C. 条件 39. How many foreign languages has the writer learned? A. Four. B. Five. C. Six. 40. The writer wrote the passage to ________. A. provide advice on learning languages B. tell his life stories in several countries C. encourage people to learn foreign languages C In Hangzhou’s quiet Xixi Wetland Park, there is a special village called Wujiawan. It’s home to 60 old houses from the Ming and Qing Dynasties. These houses are not just beautiful—they are full of history. And one man, Wang Baojin, has worked for 27 years to bring them back to life. Wang was born in a small village in 1962. He later moved to Hangzhou to work. One day in 1998, he saw a beautiful old house being torn down (拆除). It had fine wood carvings (雕刻图案), but someone was cutting it into pieces. Wang felt a deep sadness in his heart. So he bought the broken pieces and brought them home. That was the start of his journey. Wang had never studied architecture (建筑学), but that didn’t stop him. He read every book he could find, visited craftsmen (工匠), and learned step by step. He then created a small living space in a stone quarry (采石场) and began the hard work of putting the house back together. To save more houses, Wang even traveled to faraway villages. Over the years, he sold his house, left his high-paying job, and spent all he had saving more old houses. Luckily, in 2007, the city government noticed his work and allowed him to rebuild the houses in a wetland park. Now, 60 old houses stand proudly in Wujiawan, and another 60 are waiting to be rebuilt. Wang also invites young artists to live and work in the village to make it full of life. For Wang, this is the work of his life, and he will keep going, as long as he can. 41.
