The school English newspaper is preparing a page called My Role Model. Students are invited to write about a person who has influenced them in study, work or life. The person can be a scientist, a teacher, a skilled worker, a family member or a classmate. The article should explain who the person is, what he or she has done, and why the writer looks up to this person.
Each article should be about 120 words. Students are encouraged to use expressions from Unit 8, such as role model, respectable, make contributions, devote oneself to and never give up. The writing should be true, clear and positive. Do not simply list prizes. Try to describe one real experience or detail that shows the person's spirit. For example, if you write about a nurse, you may describe how she comforted a worried patient; if you write about a mechanic, you may describe how he checked a small part carefully.
The newspaper group will choose ten articles for the school website. The writers of the best three articles will be invited to share their stories at the Monday meeting. If you want to join, please send your article to englishpaper@school.cn before Friday afternoon. Remember to write your name, class and phone number at the end of the email.

Many students know Yuan Longping as the “Father of Hybrid Rice”. He was not born a hero, but he became a role model because he cared about a very real problem: hunger. When he was young, he saw that many people did not have enough food. This experience made him decide to study agriculture and look for a better kind of rice. His dream was simple but great: he wanted more people to have full bowls.
Yuan spent years working in the fields. The work was hot, tiring and sometimes disappointing. However, he did not give up. He believed that science should serve people's daily needs. After long research, his team developed hybrid rice with higher yields. This achievement helped China produce more rice and also offered useful experience to other countries. The crop was later grown in many places, giving people another way to fight hunger.
What makes Yuan respectable is not only his scientific success. He lived simply and kept working even after becoming famous. He once said that he had two dreams: to enjoy the cool under rice plants as tall as trees, and to see hybrid rice grown around the world. These dreams showed his love for people and his sense of responsibility. He also encouraged young researchers to be brave, patient and practical.
For vocational school students, Yuan's story gives a clear message. A useful skill becomes more valuable when it is connected with social needs. Whether a student studies farming, nursing, machinery or service, careful learning and steady practice can help solve real problems. A student may begin with a small skill in class, but if he keeps improving it and uses it to help others, he can also make contributions to society. That is why many young people still look up to Yuan Longping today.

When the teacher asked students to practise speaking with patients, he was afraid of making mistakes. He even thought about changing his major because he felt that nursing needed both skill and confidence.
One afternoon, the school invited Nurse Li to give a talk. She had worked in a community health center for fifteen years. She told the students that nursing was not only about medicine. “A nurse should notice small changes, listen patiently and make people feel safe,” she said. Then she shared a story about helping an old man remember to take medicine by making a simple daily chart. The chart was not expensive, but it solved a real problem for the family.
Wang Hui was deeply moved. Nurse Li did not use difficult words, but every example came from real work. After the talk, he asked her how to become more confident. She smiled and said, “Confidence comes from practice. Start with one small task and do it carefully every day. When you can do a small thing well, you will be ready for a bigger one.”
From then on, Wang Hui changed his way of learning. He made cards for each operation, practised with classmates after school and recorded his mistakes. A role model is not always a person on a stage. Sometimes, a role model is someone who quietly finishes ordinary work with a great heart. In a vocational school, students can find role models in many places: a teacher who prepares lessons carefully, a mechanic who checks every small part, or a classmate who practises a skill again and again after class. These people may not appear in newspapers, but their actions can still encourage others.
Good role models usually have three common qualities. First, they have a clear goal. They know what they are working for and do not change direction easily. Second, they keep learning. Even when they have made achievements, they remain open to new knowledge and better methods. Third, they care about others. Their success is not only for themselves; it also brings help, safety or hope to people around them.
Learning from a role model does not mean copying everything. Students should understand the spirit behind the story and connect it with their own study. For example, a student who admires a scientist can learn careful thinking. A student who respects a firefighter can learn courage and teamwork. A student who looks up to a skilled worker can learn responsibility for quality. Different role models may give students different kinds of strength.
Most importantly, students should turn admiration into action. Reading a story is only the first step. Making a study plan, practising a skill, helping classmates and reflecting on mistakes are more practical. When young people take small actions every day, they may also become reliable people who can make contributions in the future.
31. According to the passage, where can vocational school students find role models?
A. Only on TV. B. Only in foreign countries.
C. Only in history books. D. In many places around them.
32. Which is NOT mentioned as a common quality of good role models?
A. Having a clear goal. B. Buying expensive things.
C. Keeping learning. D. Caring about others.
33. What can a student learn from a firefighter?
A. Courage and teamwork. B. How to sell prizes.
C. How to avoid responsibility. D. Careless thinking.
34. What does the underlined word “admiration” mean?
A. 疑惑 B. 敬佩
C. 浪费 D. 借口
35. What is the best title for the passage?
A. Why Students Should Stop Practising B. Famous People on the Stage
C. From Looking Up to Taking Action D. How to Win Every Prize
【答案】31. D 32. B 33. A 34. B 35. C
【导语】本文说明榜样不只存在于舞台上,并引导学生把敬佩转化为日常学习和实践行动。

A. He liked expensive clothes. B. He stopped working after becoming famous.

A. Useful skills should help solve real problems. B. Only scientists can be role models.

At the beginning of this term, Wang Hui did not think he could be a good nursing student. He was shy and often forgot the order of basic operations in training class.
Two months later, he could explain blood pressure measurement clearly to a visitor during the school open day. Nurse Li became his role model, not because she was famous, but because she showed him the meaning of skill, patience and care.

C. He lacked confidence in nursing study. D. He wanted to be a basketball player.

C. He forgot his training. D. He made cards and practised after school.
30. Why did Nurse Li become Wang Hui's role model?
A. Because she was very famous online. B. Because she gave him money.
C. Because she showed the meaning of skill, patience and care. D. Because she asked him to leave school.
D
