What makes you feel better when you’re sick? A bowl of hot soup, or maybe a good night’s sleep? But have you ever tried asking a doctor to stick needles (针头) through your skin? This idea may sound a little different, but many people say it works! It is called acupuncture (针灸), and it has been around for a long time.
Acupuncture is the use of needles to put pressure on special points on the body. It is part of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and started thousands of years ago. From China, it has spread all over the world. Scientific research shows it helps with many medical problems. So if you are OK with needles, this ancient practice is worth a try!
Are you wondering how acupuncture works? In TCM, it is based on the idea of Qi. Qi is the life force or energy that flows through the body. Acupuncture is said to be good for the flow of Qi.
Have you ever had a headache? How about back pain? Acupuncture can help both of these problems. Today, experts have learned that acupuncture works with the body’s nervous system. By doing so, it can help stop pain.
Is acupuncture safe? As long as it’s done by an expert, yes! Acupuncturists have to learn Chinese medicine to get a diploma (证书). They have to take exams. They know wrongly placed needles can cause serious injury.
Acupuncture may be the best-known practice in TCM. But people can still see plenty of other ancient practices today. Many people believe Chinese herbal (草本的) medicine improves their health. Others turn to Tai Chi because they think it can improve the flow of Qi.
