Zheng Xie, also known as Zheng Banqiao, was one of the most famous painters in ancient China. He was good at painting bamboo. He once said, “All the people in this world grow flowers, but I will plant bamboo only.”
Zheng created many bamboo paintings. One of them is called “Bamboo and Stone”. In the painting, thin but strong bamboo grows on a cliff (悬崖), standing against strong winds. The dark and light ink and the crossing lines make the bamboo look real. A poem (诗) next to it praises the strong and brave spirit of bamboo.

On April 24, 2026, China celebrated its Space Day with the theme “Seventy Years of Reaching for the Sky, Exploring (探索) the Universe Together.” The event was held across three cities in Hainan Province — Haikou, Wenchang, and Sanya — each showing different aspects of China’s growing space program.
In Wenchang, about 400 students visited the Hainan Commercial Space Launch Site (海南商业航天发射场). They walked near rocket launch towers and command centers, listening to experts explain how rockets work. The students even touched rocket models and tried simulated (模拟的) launch operations. “I never thought I could stand so close to a real launch tower,” said one excited student. “It makes me want to become an astronaut.”
The events included seven main activities: flag-raising ceremonies, space open days, science lectures, exhibitions, intellectual property discussions, painting activities, and light shows. These activities showed not only China’s achievements in space but also Hainan’s role as a rising center for space technology.
China’s space program has made remarkable progress over the past seventy years. From launching its first satellite in 1970 to building the Tiangong Space Station, China has turned many dreams into reality. The Space Day celebrations remind young people that the future of space exploration lies in their hands.

Good manners (礼仪) are important in our life. They tell us how to behave properly in different situations, and how to show respect to others. In China, good manners have a long history, and they are an important part of Chinese traditional culture.
In ancient China, people paid great attention to manners. The famous thinker Confucius said that “Without manners, a person can’t stand in society”. He taught his students to be polite, respectful and honest. For thousands of years, Chinese people have been following the rules of good manners, and passing them down from generation to generation.
Nowadays, good manners are still very important in our daily life. In public places, we should wait in line, keep quiet, and not throw rubbish everywhere. On the bus, we should give our seats to the elderly, the disabled and women with babies. When we talk with others, we should listen carefully, and not cut in on them.
Good manners are not only important in our daily life, but also in cross-cultural communication. With the development of globalization (全球化), more and more people have the chance to communicate with foreign people. In this situation, knowing the manners of different cultures is very important. For example, in China, people often shake hands when they meet for the first time, but in some Western countries, people hug or kiss each other on the face. If we don’t know these cultural differences, we may make others unhappy, or even cause misunderstandings.
Some people think that good manners are not important in modern life. But I don’t think so. Good manners can help us make more friends, get along well with others, and make the world a better place. They show our kindness and respect to others. No matter how the society develops, good manners will never be out of date.
12. What did Confucius say about good manners according to Paragraph 2?
A. Good manners are more important for ancient people.
B. We should pass good manners down to the next generation.
C. Without manners, a person can’t live in the society well.
13. According to the passage, how do people in some Western countries greet each other when they first meet?
A. B. C.
14. Which of the following is the best title for the passage?
A. The History of Chinese Manners
B. Good Manners: Never Out of Date
C. Cross-cultural Communication Manners
15. What will the writer most probably talk about next?
A. Some ways for teenagers to develop good manners in daily life.
B. Differences between traditional and modern manners in China.
C. The history of manners in other ancient countries like Egypt and Greece.

I always admired my grandmother Jenny’s gardening skills. But it wasn’t until a sunny afternoon in her backyard that I became interested in gardening myself. We were there to grow tomatoes. 16 Then she shared stories of her own grandmother doing the same. It’s a family tradition!
Over time, the small seedling (幼苗) had grown into a large tomato plant with many juicy red tomatoes. Harvesting (收获) those tomatoes with my grandma was a joy I won’t forget. We spent hours in her kitchen making delicious homemade spaghetti sauce. 17
My time in the garden with my grandma showed me that gardening is more than just a hobby. It’s a way to connect with our roots. The garden became something we both loved, bringing us closer together and creating a strong bond.
18 I watered the plants too much and forgot to take care of the soil. It was a learning experience. I saw these moments as opportunities to learn. I read books, went to workshops, and asked experienced gardeners in my community for advice.
Yet, Mother Nature can be unpredictable (难以预测的), from unbearable heat to unexpected frosts (霜冻). I lost some of my favorite plants due to bad weather. But I didn’t get upset. 19 I used drought-tolerant (抗旱的) plants and protective coverings like shade cloths and frost blankets to help my strong plants grow.
Gardening is a lifelong journey of learning. 20 It’s like finding a hidden library, where each plant and plot offers something new to discover. The more time I spend in the garden, the more I realize that the soil is not just a place for plants to grow — it’s also ideal ground for my personal growth.
A. I started planting with the weather in mind.
B. She handed me a small young tomato plant.
C. My grandma often cooks tomato sauce for our family.
D. Just the smell alone brought back so many memories.
E. However, my first attempts (尝试) at gardening didn’t go very well.

China has many world-famous cultural treasures, such as pandas, food and calligraphy. However, embroidery (刺绣) is another traditional art with a long history. It is recognized as part of China’s National Intangible Cultural Heritage.
To let more global people know this ancient craft, a special Suzhou embroidery exhibition was held in London from March 5. Titled “Suzhou Embroidery: The Awakening of a 1,000-Year Tradition”, it was held at the Royal Geographical Society. It showed 58 works created by embroidery masters Yao Huifen, Yao Huiqin and contemporary (当代的) artist Wu Jian’an over ten years. The works ____________________. The first part showed traditional skills, the second part showed seven pieces based on an ancient Chinese painting, and the third part showed two modern abstract (抽象的) works.

She said they kept traditional skills while making great innovations (创新). They broke old rules and made embroidery a new form of modern art. For artist Wu Jian’an, embroidery brings him a new creative experience. Different from fast art forms like painting and sculpture (雕刻), embroidery is slow and peaceful, just like meditation (冥想). He hopes the exhibition can help more foreign people understand Chinese traditional culture through these hand-made beautiful works.
Yu Junyao, a young art lover who helped organize the exhibition, studied art history in the US. She said that after returning to China, she started to truly appreciate (欣赏) Suzhou embroidery. “It’s important for the younger generation to protect these traditional handicrafts,” she said. “We should share them not just as China’s treasure, but also an important cultural legacy (遗产) for all humans.”
