As a child, Fischer loved going to the beach and riding bikes along the coastline with his father, Karl Fischer. So when he lost his dad to cancer, he turned to the healing power of the ocean.
At the start of this year, Fischer wrote his father's name on his surfboard and took it out to sea in Newport, Rhode Island. His father's name shone in the sun on what felt like a shared adventure. Inspired, Fischer made a video and posted it on social media on the same day. "If you love the ocean, or you know someone who loves the ocean, or maybe you lost someone who just loved being outdoors... you can commend on this video with their name and a bit of their story, and I'll put their name on my board here, just like I've done with my father's name," he said in the video. "And I'll take them out in the ocean for you."
Names poured in from thousands of strangers who felt sad because of the loss of their loved ones. And with that the One Last Wave Project was born, the aim of which was to exchange stories with a community of people going through similar pain. They were learning to heal together. About two months later, Fischer had received over 5.000 names and written most of them on two surfboards. The first two surfboards ran out of space — he was working on getting more. He wrote the names in neat letters on the surfboard and added a clear acrylic (丙烯酸的) coat over them so that they didn't wash off.
Though a lot of people have been struggling with grief in the pandemic, Fischer was amazed by the responses that had poured in. "If I am able to help one or more persons, that is enough for me," he said. "But I am blown away — by not just the number of people sharing, but the depth of stories and love that they are sharing." And he plans to take his project around the world and connect with even more people — through shared grief and the power of the ocean.
24. How did Fischer share his ideas with others?
A. By giving a live broadcast online. B. By posting a video on the Internet. C. By writing his father's name on his surfboard. D. By riding bikes along the coastline.
25. Why did Fischer start the One Last Wave Project?
A. To help people out of sadness. B. To memorize his father.
C. To gain more public attention. D. To fight against the pandemic.
26. What does Fischer intend to do next?
A. Share more stories of his experience at sea.
B. Extend the project worldwide.
C. Connect to more social media.
D. Sail around the world with more people.
27. What can we learn from Fischer's story?
A. Actions speak louder than words.
B. A good beginning means a good ending.
C. He who laughs last laughs loud.
D. Sharing can help heal the pain.

As a young girl growing up in France, Sarah Toumi dreamed of becoming a leader who could make the world a better place. Her passion to help others was awakened when, from the age of nine, she accompanied her Tunisian father to his birthplace in the east of the country during holidays. There she organized homework clubs and activities for children.
Toumi witnessed first-hand the destructive effect of desertification. "Within 10 years rich farmers became worse off, and in 10 years from now they will be poor. I wanted to stop the Sahara Desert in its tracks." A decrease in average rainfall and an increase in the seriousness of droughts have led to an estimated 75 per cent of Tunisia's agricultural lands being threatened by desertification.
Toumi recognized that farming practices needed to change. She is confident that small land areas can bring large returns if farmers are able to adapt by planting sustainable crops, using new technologies for water treatment and focusing on natural products and fertilizers rather than chemicals.
In 2012, Toumi consolidated her dream to fight the desert. She moved to Tunisia, and set up a program named Acacias for All to put her sustainable farming philosophy into action. "I want to show young people in rural areas that they can create opportunities where they are. Nobody is better able to understand the impact of desertification and climate change than somebody who is living with no access to water."
By September 2016, more than 130,000 acacia trees had been planted on 20 pilot farms, with farmers recording a 60 per cent survival rate. Toumi estimates that some 3 million acacia trees are needed to protect Tunisia's farmland. She expects to plant 1 million trees by 2018. In the next couple of years, Toumi hopes to extend the program to Algeria and Morocco.
28. How did Toumi's holiday trips to Tunisia influence her?
A. They helped her understand her father better.
B. They made her determined to leave the country.
C. They fired her enthusiasm for helping the locals.
D. They made her dream of becoming a teacher.
29. What is the biggest threat to the farmland in Tunisia?
A. Low rainfall. B. Soil pollution. C. Desertification. D. Chemicals.
30. Why did Toumi build Acacias for All?
A. To create more jobs for the young people.
B. To persuade the farmers not to use fertilizers.
C. To help more children gain a basic education.
D. To facilitate the protection of the farmland.
31. Which of the following can best describe Toumi?
A. Determined and modest. B. Responsible and honest.
C. Eco - conscious and ambitious. D. Warm - hearted and generous.
D
A satellite the size of a microwave oven successfully broke free from its orbit around Earth on Monday and is headed toward the moon.
It's been an unusual journey already for the CAPSTONE satellite. It was launched six days ago from New Zealand by the company Rocket Lab in one of their rockets. With a small body, it will take another four months for the satellite to reach the moon, as it travels along using the smallest amount of energy. NASA put the total amount of money spent on the mission at only $32.7 million. "For just some tens of millions of dollars, there is now a rocket and a spacecraft that can take you to the moon, to asteroids, to Venus, to Mars," Rocket Lab founder Peter Beck said.
Beck said it was hard to put his excitement into words. "It's probably going to take a while to sink in. It's been a project that has taken us two and a half years and is just extremely difficult to execute," he said. "So to see it all come together tonight and see that spacecraft on its way to the moon, it's just absolutely impressive."
If the rest of the mission is successful, the CAPSTONE satellite will send back vital information for months as the first to take a new orbit around the moon: a stretched - out egg shape with one end of the orbit passing close to the moon and the other far from it. Because of the shape, the satellite can travel a relatively short distance to enter the orbit, only 1,000 miles away from the North Pole at its nearest pass to Earth every six and a half days. By taking advantage of the precise point between Earth and the moon where the gravity from both is a balanced out, the satellite can use less energy to maintain the orbit.
Eventually, NASA plans to build a small space station orbiting the moon that will provide extensive capabilities to support the Artemis program, a program which is a renaming of several earlier activities NASA was already undertaking to send humans to the moon. For the mission, NASA teamed up with two commercial companies.
32. Why is the satellite designed to be small?
A. To reduce the expenses.
B. To take man to other planets.
C. To break free from Earth's orbit.
D. To fit Rocket Lab's small rocket.
33. How did Beck feel about the process of doing the project?
A. It was very challenging. B. It was extremely satisfying.
C. It was a bit disappointing. D. It was quite unexpected.
34. What is the advantage of the new orbit?
A. It is round in shape.
B. It saves the satellite fuel.
C. It has balanced gravity.
D. It is close to the moon at both ends.
35. What might be the goal of the Artemis program?
A. Building a space station. B. Renaming several earlier activities.
C. Sending man to the moon. D. Working with commercial companies.

At age 10, I stood in front of my new class, my new classmates looking at me with mild interest as my teacher introduced me. I joined in the middle of the school year. There were 41 students in the class, so I was the 42nd.
All my classmates sat in pairs except this one girl, Mary. I went and sat down next to her and gave her a small, uncertain smile. She smiled in return. The class started and we didn't talk until lunch time. At lunch time, I took out my lunch box, packed by mother. It had fried rice with home - made cakes and a small box of fruits. Clearly my mum had spent time packing this yummy lunch. Mary took out a small box with bread and butter inside. In India, it's pretty rare for kids to just get bread and butter for lunch. The only time I had bread and butter for lunch was when my mum was unwell. So I thought that was a possible reason. I offered her a small part of my lunch and forgot about it.
The next day, she again had bread and butter. Well, I thought, her mother might have fallen ill, so she was taking time to recover. I again offered her part of my lunch. This went on for a week. Then one day, I asked the question that I shouldn't have asked, "Is your mum still not well?"
In fact, I wasn't prepared for her answer. I came to know that her mother worked in a supermarket and was in poor health. What's worse, she constantly stayed at home with no income. I didn't know what to say at that time. However, I decided to help I went home and told mum that my lunch wasn't enough and I still felt hungry after eating it. Mum started packing a bigger lunch. And in school, I'd tell Mary that my mum had packed me a lunch too big, so could she please help me finish it? Then I asked her what her favorite dish was. "Naan(印度烤饼)," she whispered.

Paragraph 1:
When I told mum that I wanted very much to have naan, she felt puzzled. But when I explained Mary’s situation to her, she immediately understood. The next day, when I opened my lunch box, I was delighted to find not only my usual dishes but also a piece of warm naan. When I handed the naan to Mary, her eyes lit up. She took small bites, saying it was the most delicious naan she had ever tasted. After that, mum would always prepare Mary’s favorite food in my lunch box. We shared lunch every day, and our friendship grew deeper as we shared stories about our lives and families.
Paragraph 2:
I moved out of that school soon after and didn’t stay in touch with Mary. Years later, when I was working in a restaurant, a woman walked up to me with a big smile. It was Mary! She told me she was the owner of the restaurant, and she offered me a piece of naan as soon as we sat down. She said those shared lunches had been the brightest part of her hard childhood, and my kindness had inspired her to help people in need when she grew up. That day, we spent hours talking, and I felt a warm glow in my heart. A small act of kindness when we were young had connected us in such a beautiful way, and it showed that kindness can really be passed on.
