Arsh believes in the importance of making the world a more beautiful place. The talented boy not only paints but also sells his artwork and donates the money.
It all started when his parents bought him a set of painting tools for his 8th birthday. Once he had his own materials, he began spending much of his free time putting color on his canvas(画布). As Arsh’s paintings began to grow in number, he decided to give them as gifts to friends and family. Receiving a positive response from people around him, he soon realized his pieces had the potential to get much more than smiles and praise.
His light-bulb moment came shortly after: he would sell his artwork and donate the money to charity. His first plan was to raise $1,000 for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, which he accomplished in around nine months by selling his paintings on social media and at local art shows. Since then, he’s broadened his reach to benefit other organizations, including childhood cancer nonprofit Compass to Care and the Make-A-Wish Foundation. He’s raised over $16,000 for charities so far.
Arsh’s artwork is often colorful and cheery, as one might expect from a youngster, but it showcases the impressive technique of a gifted artist. Some pieces are more abstract in nature; others feature realistic renditions (演绎) of flowers and animals. They range in size and complexity, and, accordingly, price. Small paintings might sell for $10 while larger canvases, up to five feet, have gone for $800.
Last year, Arsh won The Diana Award, an honor presented by a UK charity founded on Princess Diana’s belief that young people have the power to change their country. And the young artist has advice for other kids looking to make a difference. “Helping others doesn’t have to be, like, money or anything. It can be your time, your skills, your talent,” he says, “and overall, just be kind to other people to make their day better.”
24.What made Arsh interested in painting?
A.A birthday present from his parents. B.His parents’ deep love for painting.
C.The encouragement of others around him. D.His fascination with the beauty of nature.
25.Why did Arsh decide to sell his artwork?
A.To pay for his painting materials. B.To get more attention from others.
C.To attract children’s interest in art. D.To help those people who are in need.
26.What can we learn about Arsh from the text?
A.His fundraising plan is going well. B.He will turn his attention to his studies.
C.All his paintings sell at high prices now. D.He is going to teach other children to paint for free.
27.What does Arsh want to say in the last paragraph?
A.Every child has a unique talent. B.Everyone has the ability to help others.
C.Talent plays an important role in learning art. D.Helping others is the responsibility of young artists.

A 2,300-year- old shield(盾)made of tree bark has been discovered in Leicestershire, Europe. Such type of shield has never been dug out in Europe although shields like gold ones have been found before. No wonder that scientists regard the 2, 300-year-old shield to be valuable. "This is a great object used as a weapon (武器)in the Iron Age," said Julia Farley, an expert in British and European Iron Age collections.
The shield was discovered in 2015 by scientists from the University of Leicester Archacological Service in an “animal watering hole” close to the River Soar. Organic(有机物)objects from the period rarely survive, but the shield was deposited in waterlogged(水涝的) soil that the“animal watering hole” contains. The waterlogged soil tends to cause low temperature underground and poorly-circulated air, which makes it hard for organic things to break up.
Bark shields of the period were entirely unknown in Europe and researchers had assumed that the material might have been too weak and fragile for use in war. However, experiments to remake the weapon in the same material showed the 3mm-thick shield, though very light, would have been tough enough for battle. It was likely that similar weapons were widespread.
The shield is made from green bark that has been constructed with many types of wood. One of them is the green wood, which would tighten as it has dried giving the shield its strength and a shape of a figure of eight. The outside of the shield has been painted and given a special decoration. Farley said, “This is a lost technology. Maybe it’s a technique that was used for making bark products in many ways."
“Because so little organic material survives from the period,”Farley said,“we are left with the earthworks(土木工程)and some of the ironwork. But we don't really see the everyday world of these people: the wooden houses they lived in and their clothing. So the visual world of the Iron Age is lost to us. But something like the bark shield is just a tiny window into that."
The shield has been donated to the British Museum. Farley said she hoped it would be seen by the public next year.
28. Why is the newly-discovered shield considered to be valuable?
A. It contains some rare materials like gold.
B. It's the oldest shield found in the world so far.
C. It’s the only example of its kind ever found in Europe.
D. It's the only weapon dating from the Iron Age of Leicestershire.
29. What can we learn about the “animal watering hole” ?
A. It once lied in a battle field
B. It helped preserve the bark shield
C. It was buried with many artworks.
D. It is close to a university.
30. What assumption did scientists use to have about bark shields?
A. They tended to be impractical.
B. They were very light weapons.
C. They were made as artworks.
D. They were made of two kinds of wood
31. What was Farley’s attitude to the newly-discovered shield?
A. Concerned.
B. Doubtful
C. Positive.
D. Negative.

Are you a fan of birds? If so, you may have admired their beautiful colors and sweet songs. But do you know these feathered friends can actually do more than that?
A new study published in the journal Scientific Reports finds that exposure to birds, either in the home or outdoors, can boost people’s moods.
Researchers at King’s College London used a smartphone app built by the school’s Urban Mind project to collect the real-time feelings of study participants upon seeing or hearing a bird. A total of 1,292 people living in the United Kingdom, Europe, and the United States participated in the study which was conducted between April 2018 and October 2021.
The app asked participants three times a day whether they could see or hear a bird followed by a series of questions on their mental well-being. Participants were also asked questions about whether they could see trees, plants or hear any water to see if people were experiencing better mental well-being due to being in or seeing nature, and not just because of exposure to birds.
According to the study, the mental well-being of study participants with and without depression was significantly improved after seeing a bird or hearing birdsong compared to not seeing or hearing a bird.
There is a growing number of studies that link spending time outdoors (either in green leafy places or next to bodies of water) to improved mental health. But there are few studies that look at how different aspects of nature can play into humans’ mental well-being.
And while the study adds to the small pile of research on birds and mental health, the report marks the first time researchers have studied the responses to birds and mental well-being in real-time, according to Ryan Hammoud, lead author of the study.
“They kind of examine nature as a single object when nature includes many different characteristics and features like trees, plants, water, birds,” said Hammoud, “We choose to focus on bird life to try and understand which specific characteristics of nature benefit mental well-being.”
32.What is the purpose of paragraph 1?
A.To introduce a phenomenon. B.To bring in the topic.
C.To ask an interesting question. D.To provide background information.
33.How did the researchers conduct the study?
A.By analyzing previous studies. B.By observing the behavior of birds.
C.By gathering feelings of participants. D.By studying people’s effect on birds.
34.What does Hammoud think of the new study?
A.Pioneering. B.Interesting. C.Conventional. D.Practical.
35.What is the main idea of the text?
A.Bird watching has become a popular hobby.
B.Exposure to birds can improve mental well-being.
C.Nature is the best medicine for mental health issues.
D.Spending time outdoors can impact mental health positively.

17-20【原文】 W: Hi everyone, welcome to our school library. I’d like to introduce a popular new book, the Starry Notes. This kind of book can be found in many school bookstores and libraries now. Generally, the story notes has about 180 pages. A copy usually weighs around 200 to 250 grams. In March, students often borrow it to read during breaks. In May, it’s popular for group discussions in literature classes. When final exams come in July, some students use it to relax between studying. The book tells stories about high school students. When a new term starts, the main characters join the school’s stargazing club. Once they’re familiar with the club activities, they start planning a star-themed show.
It’s hard to put down this book because the stories feel real. You can almost imagine being part of their adventures. Also, the writing is clear and the pictures inside are beautiful. What makes the starry notes different from other teen books? Its cover is sky blue in spring and changes to deep purple in winter, and the pages have tiny stars that shine under light.

My Intelligent Robot for the Elderly
I’m thrilled that my intelligent robot for the elderly won first prize in the school’s Sci-Tech Innovation Competition.
I designed it to provide company and assistance to the elderly. This robot can chat with them, remind them to take medicine on time, and even call their family in emergencies like falls. It also plays music and tells stories to relieve their loneliness.
I hope my robot can bring more warmth and safety to the elderly and make their lives more comfortable.. I’ll keep improving it to help more seniors live a better life.

Arsh believes in the importance of making the world a more beautiful place. The talented boy not
only paints but also sells his artwork and donates the money.
It all started when his parents bought him a set of painting tools for his 8th birthday.Once he had his
own materials,he began spending much of his free time putting color on his canvas ()As Arsh's
paintings began to grow in number,he decided to give them as gifts to friends and family.Receiving a
positive response from people around him,he soon realized his pieces had the potential to get much more
than smiles and praise.
His light-bulb moment came shortly after:he would sell his artwork and donate the money to
charity. His first plan was to raise $1,000 for St.Jude Children's Research Hospital, which he
accomplished in around nine months by selling his paintings on social media and at local art shows.Since
then,he's broadened his reach to benefit other organizations, including childhood cancer nonprofit
Compass to Care and the Make-A-Wish Foundation. He's raised over $16,000 for charities so far.
Arsh's artwork is often colorful and cheery,as one might expect from a youngster, but it showcases
the impressive technique of a gifted artist. Some pieces are more abstract in nature;others feature
realistic renditions (of flowers and animals. They range in size and complexity, and, accordingly,
price.Small paintings might sell for $10 while larger canvases,up to five feet, have gone for $800.
Last year,Arsh won The Diana Award,an honor presented by a UK charity founded on Princess
Diana's belief that young people have the power to change their country. And the young artist has advice

A 2,300-year-old shield()made of tree bark has been discovered in Leicestershire,Europe.Such
type of shield has never been dug out in Europe although shields like gold ones have been found before.
No wonder that scientists regard the 2,300-year-old shield to be valuable."This is a great object used as
a weapon ()in the Iron Age,"said Julia Farley,an expert in British and European Iron Age
collections.
The shield was discovered in 2015 by scientists from the University of Leicester Archacological
Service in an“animal watering hole”close to the River Soar.Organic(有机物)objects from the period
rarely survive, but the shield was deposited in waterlogged(soil that theanimal watering hole"
contains. The waterlogged soil tends to cause low temperature underground and poorly-circulated air,
which makes it hard for organic things to break up.
Bark shields of the period were entirely unknown in Europe and researchers had assumed that the
material might have been too weak and fragile for use in war. However, experiments to remake the
weapon in the same material showed the 3mm-thick shield, though very light, would have been tough
enough for battle. It was likely that similar weapons were widespread.
The shield is made from green bark that has been constructed with many types of wood. One of
them is the green wood, which would tighten as it has dried giving the shield its strength and a shape of a
第3页
figure of eight. The outside of the shield has been painted and given a special decoration.Farley said,
"This is a lost technology.Maybe it's a technique that was used for making bark products in many ways."
"Because so little organic material survives from the period,"Farley said,"we are left with the
earthworks(土木工程)and some of the ironwork. But we don't really see the everyday world of these
people:the wooden houses they lived in and their clothing. So the visual world of the Iron Age is lost to
us.But something like the bark shield is just a tiny window into that."
The shield has been donated to the British Museum.Farley said she hoped it would be seen by the
public next year.
28.Why is the newly-discovered shield considered to be valuable?
A.It contains some rare materials like gold.
B.It's the oldest shield found in the world so far.
C.It's the only example of its kind ever found in Europe.
D.It's the only weapon dating from the Iron Age of Leicestershire.
29.What can we learn about the"animal watering hole"?
A.It once lied in a battle field
B.It helped preserve the bark shield
C.It was buried with many artworks.
D.It is close to a university.
30.What assumption did scientists use to have about bark shields?
A.They tended to be impractical.
B.They were very light weapons.
C.They were made as artworks.
D.They were made of two kinds of wood
31.What was Farley's attitude to the newly-discovered shield?
A.Concerned.
B.Doubtful
C.Positive.
D.Negative.

Are you a fan of birds? If so,you may have admired their beautiful colors and sweet songs. But do
you know these feathered friends can actually do more than that?
A new study published in the journal Scientific Reports finds that exposure to birds, either in the
home or outdoors, can boost people's moods.
共6页
Researchers at King's College London used a smartphone app built by the school's Urban Mind
project to collect the real-time feelings of study participants upon seeing or hearing a bird.A total of
1,292 people living in the United Kingdom,Europe, and the United States participated in the study which
was conducted between April 2018 and October 2021.
The app asked participants three times a day whether they could see or hear a bird followed by a
series of questions on their mental well-being.Participants were also asked questions about whether they
could see trees, plants or hear any water to see if people were experiencing better mental well-being due
to being in or seeing nature, and not just because of exposure to birds.
According to the study, the mental well-being of study participants with and without depression
was significantly improved after seeing a bird or hearing birdsong compared to not seeing or hearing a
bird.
There is a growing number of studies that link spending time outdoors (either in green leafy places
or next to bodies of water)to improved mental health. But there are few studies that look at how different
aspects of nature can play into humans'mental well-being.
And while the study adds to the small pile of research on birds and mental health, the report marks
the first time researchers have studied the responses to birds and mental well-being in real-time,
according to Ryan Hammoud, lead author of the study.
"They kind of examine nature as a single object when nature includes many different
characteristics and features like trees, plants, water, birds,"said Hammoud,"We choose to focus on bird
life to try and understand which specific characteristics of nature benefit mental well-being."
C.By gathering feelings of participants.D.By studying people's effect on birds.
34.What does Hammoud think of the new study?
A.Pioneering.B.Interesting
C.Conventional.
D.Practical.
35.What is the main idea of the text?
A.Bird watching has become a popular hobby.
B.Exposure to birds can improve mental well-being
C.Nature is the best medicine for mental health issues.
D.Spending time outdoors can impact mental health positively.
