Do we still need zoos?
Students of Grade Six took a survey (调查) and here are some of their ideas.
I think the zoo is an important place for us to learn about different animals, especially for kids. It makes learning so much fun. What’s more, animals can live a better life at the zoo.
— By Wang Jun
I think zoos do more harm (伤害) than good. First, keeping animals in such a small place is cruel (残忍的). They can’t run or play, so they may feel bad or even hurt themselves. Second, zoos are not helpful to animals. Many animals never learn how to live in the wild.
—By Lei Yu
It isn’t a simple “YES” or “NO” question. Improve the zoos! Make better places for the animals and help them learn to live in the wild. Teach people how to save animals, not just watch animal shows for fun. Zoos can be good if we make them better.
— By Chen Xi

The world is sad to say goodbye to Dr. Jane Goodall (1934–2025), a British scientist who studied chimpanzees (黑猩猩) all her life.
As a little girl, Jane dreamed to work with animals. This hobby later became her life’s work for over 60 years. When she was 26, she went to work in Tanzania, Africa. There she could watch chimpanzees closely. At that time, people thought only humans (人类) could use tools (工具). But in 1960, Jane was the first one to find that chimpanzees could also use tools. She wrote her finding in 1964. changing that old idea. She also found that chimpanzees were a lot like us - living in groups and feeling happy, sad and even angry. In 1977, she set up the Jane Goodall Institute (研究所) to save chimpanzees and their living places. In 1991, she started “Roots & Shoots” to help young people save animals.
