If you search for places of beauty, wetlands probably won’t be high on your list. Wetlands are areas of land that are often completely wet with water. Although they might not look very pretty, the roles that they play in nature might go beyond many people’s imagination.
Wetlands appear naturally in almost every part of the world. There are many different types of wetlands on Earth. Along with rainforests, they are among the most diverse (多样的) places on Earth. Besides natural wetlands, humans are also creating man-made ones for a number of purposes about water management.
One of the main advantages of wetlands is that they can prevent floods. They do so by storing water for a certain time and then slowly releasing (释放) it over time. Wetlands operate similarly to a sponge (海绵). When it rains heavily and water levels rise, they take in the extra water which may cause floods. This prevents water from entering rivers and streams. Then, when water levels become low later, they will release it. In many cases, wetlands offer a much more natural way than dams (坝). However, it’s important to note that wetlands, like dams, don’t stop all dangers from flooding. Once there is a very heavy rainfall, wetlands may fill up and any extra water will start to run off.
Wetlands also play a part in cleaning water. Farming actions and city waste are main causes of water pollution. Wetlands include plants and organisms that can reduce this pollution by clearing out unwanted things. Wetlands have other advantages for the environment as well. They can help to feed nearby fish populations by releasing something that can be used as food for them into rivers. Also, many animals like frogs use wetlands as baby-raising grounds because they provide the place for catching food and the water required. Some birds also come to the wetlands for food and shelter. Although wetlands may not look pretty, it’s clear that they are able to do the important work which is necessary to make sure that the circle of life remains unbroken.
21.Why does the writer mention “sponge” in Paragraph 3?
A.To explain the flood-preventing work of wetlands.
B.To describe the sponge’s feature of storing water.
C.To show the wetlands can take in water quickly like a sponge.
D.To compare the similar points between wetlands and a sponge.
22.What can we learn about wetlands from the passage?
A.People create man-made wetlands to deal with water.
B.People praise wetlands for natural beauty.
C.Wetlands can solve the pollution problems.
D.Wetlands can completely prevent the dangers caused by floods.
23.Which of the following can be the best title of the passage?

C.Wetlands—Friend of Earth
D.Wetlands—Cleaner of Environment

While we were growing up, our parents often said things like, “Look at that boy, he swims so well! He is such a talent(人才).” Such words made us believe that if we were not born a talent, we would never do things well. So we were afraid to try new things, and were afraid of making mistakes or failing. But in fact, failures(失败) and mistakes are as important as success.
Sarah is lucky. She has a great father. As a child, her father asked her the same question every weekend. “What did you fail at this week, Sarah?” He did not care too much about her grades. He cared more about what she had tried but failed at. When she told him about her failures and mistakes, he would give her a high five(举手击掌).
Do you realize what her father was doing? He was trying to make her believe that failures and mistakes are just fine. And they were a huge part of our growth and success. Most importantly, her father was telling her that she would still be loved and trusted even if she failed. Encouraged by the weekend communications, Sarah has grown into a successful businesswoman. In her journey, she has tried many new jobs and had many difficulties, but she never lost heart. Because she knew her failures and mistakes would be embraced(接受) on the weekend.
So go ahead and ask yourself and your children, “What did we fail at this week?”
24.What did Sarah’s father care more about when she was a child?
A.Sarah’s grades.
B.Sarah’s hobbies.
C.What Sarah had tried but failed at.
D.Whether Sarah was clever or not.
25.If Sarah failed, her father would ________.
A.dislike her B.still love and trust her
C.stay away from her D.argue with her
26.From the passage we can infer(推断) that Sarah’s father is a(n) ________ man.
A.wise B.polite C.interesting D.strict
27.What is the main idea of the passage?
A.How to be a good father.
B.How Sarah grew into a successful businesswoman.
C.Failures and mistakes help us get good grades.
D.Failures and mistakes are a huge part of our growth and success.

As a child, I was afraid of the dark, as so many children are. Not the dark itself, but what I was certain it had: bad spirits, bad people, and anything bad. 32 I kept myself inside the light on winter afternoon, thinking of light as magic protection. I went to bed with the hall light on and the door slightly open.
Later on, I borrowed Jill Tomlinson’s book The Owl (猫头鹰) Who Was Afraid of the Dark from the library and fell in love with the baby owl, Plop, who learns through others that dark can be exciting, kind, fun, necessary, beautiful and super. 33 In this book, all the animals that are shown on the signs of a village’s stores climb down at midnight. One of the signs is an owl, and this book has a beautiful watercolor owl on the cover.
34 I began to see the possibilities of the dark, but I still preferred to meet it with a safety cordon (防护线) of light.
All this changed for me when I moved to the countryside in east London, at 26. There I lived together with real dark for the first time in my life. I learned the wonder of a starry sky. On cool evenings when the stars seemed close enough to touch, I would dress myself in a warm coat and lie in a quiet yard and stretch (伸展) out into the sky, to the calling of owls from the woods. 35
A.I tried different ways to keep dark away.
B.But I was sure about the wonderfulness of the dark.
C.However, I spent more time outdoors and more time at night.
D.At the same time, I read and reread Phyllis Arkle’s Magic at Midnight.
E.I have learned, since then, to totally love the dark and everything that lives in it.
F.These stories described night as a magical space where good things could happen.

Many students ask for advice about how to improve their English. Here are three basic questions.
The first question is about understanding English films and songs. Li Hao from Hubei wrote, “I like watching English films and listening to English songs, but I don’t understand very much. What can I do?”
Watching films and listening to songs are great ways to learn English! Watch and listen several times, and guess the meaning of the new words. Each time you will learn something new. I also advise you to talk about the films or songs with your friends in English.
The second question is about speaking. Wang Fan from Jilin wrote, “our school has a teacher from the US. I am shy and I am afraid to speak to her. What should I do?”
You can say, “Hello, how are you?” “Do you like China?” These are good ways to start a conversation. And before you begin, you should smile at her! Remember this: Do not be shy. Just try.
The third question is about vocabulary. Zhang Lei from Anhui wrote, “I write down new words, but I forget them quickly. How can I remember them?”
Do not worry. I suggest you write four or five words a day on pieces of paper and place them in your room. Read the words when you see them, and try to use them.

【答案】21.A 22.A 23.C
根据第三段“When it rains heavily and water levels rise, they take in the extra water which may cause floods. This prevents water from entering rivers and streams.” 故选A。
根据第二段“Besides natural wetlands, humans are also creating man-made ones for a number of purposes about water management.” 故选A。
通读全文并根据“Although they might not look very pretty, the roles that they play in nature might go beyond many people’s imagination.”
