One Possible Version :
That Made a Difference to Me
Small warm moments are like little lights guiding me to grow. One volunteer experience changed me a lot.
Last winter vacation, I joined a volunteer group to visit elderly people living alone. At first, I felt nervous and didn’t know what to say to them. An old grandma smiled at me softly. She told me interesting stories about her youth while I helped clean her room. Before I left, she held my hand tightly and thanked me again and again. I saw bright joy in her eyes.
This experience truly made a difference to me. I used to only care about my own life and seldom thought about others’ feelings. Now I realize simple care can bring great warmth to lonely people. I decide to keep doing volunteer work and pass on kindness to more people around me.
That Made a Difference to Me
Last year, I had a really hard time learning English. I couldn’t remember new words and often felt very upset. One day, my English teacher, Mr. Li, learned about my problem. He came up to me and said, “Don’t worry. It takes time to learn English well. Why don’t you try making flashcards to help you remember the words ?” I followed his advice and started making flashcards. To my surprise, it really worked! I remembered more words this way. My English level improved little by little.
What a meaningful experience I had! I learned a lot from the experience. I realized that my teacher’s advice made a great difference to me. I also wanted to show my thanks to my English teacher.

Did you know? International Volunteer Day began in 1986, and now more and more people get to know about it. We celebrate it on December 5th every year.
Do you want to be a volunteer? What can you do to help people? The other day, the students of Class 3, Grade 8 in Sunshine School learned about the topic of volunteering. Their teacher shared the stories of two volunteers with them.
Gao Ruyi, a 60-year-old man, works in Sanmenxia, Henan. There he has protected swans for many years. People call him “Swan Dad”. On New Year’s Day in 1988, Gao found someone opening fire on swans. Four swans lay on the ground. He saved two of them, but the other two got badly hurt and died at night. After that day, Gao decided to become a guardian (守卫者) of swans.
In October 2009, Gao organized a team to save more swans. Later, more and more people joined them. Because of their hard work, the number of swans in Sanmenxia has increased (增加).
Wang Jinping is 59 years old, She is the only doctor on Jidiao Island. She volunteers to care for the old people there.
Wang’s patients trust her very much. An old man stops by her office every day just to see whether Wang is there, even if he isn’t sick. He won’t be worried if Wang is there. Another old woman only follows Wang’s advice, so her son often asks Wang to persuade (说服) his mother to eat healthy food.
“You need to run to the front whenever people need you,” Wang’s dad always said. “I can do that. I promise I’ll give 24-hour service!” Wang said. Wang has kept her promise over the past 37 years.
