I am writing to sincerely respond to your recent complaint email regarding the cleanliness of your room during your stay at ABC Hotel. First and foremost, please accept my deepest apologies for the inconvenience and disappointment this may have caused you — we understand that a clean, comfortable room is the foundation of a pleasant stay, and we deeply regret failing to meet your expectations on this occasion.
As a member of the hotel management team, I want to assure you that your feedback is not only taken seriously but has been treated as a top priority. Life is full of surprises and you never know how things will turn out.
John Gurdon is a good example of this. As a boy, he was told that he was hopeless in science and ranked last in his class. However, aged 79, the very same Gurdon shared the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2012 with Japanese stem cell researcher Shinya Yamanaka.
Like so many scientists, Gurdon shows us where the power of curiosity and perseverance can lead.
At the age of 15 in 1948, Gurdon ranked last out of the 250 boys at his high school in biology and every other science subject. The science teacher at Gurdon’s high school even said that his dream of becoming a scientist was quite ridiculous.
In spite of his teacher’s criticism, Gurdon followed his curiosity and kept working hard. He went to the lab earlier and left later than anyone else. He experienced thousands of failures, but he never gave up.
“My own belief is that we will, in the end, understand everything about how cells actually work,” said Gurdon.
In 1962, Gurdon took a cell from an adult frog and moved its genetic information into an egg cell. The egg cell then grew into a clone of the adult frog. This technique later helped to create the sheep Dolly in 1996, the first cloned mammal in the world.
In 2006, Gurdon’s work was developed by Yamanaka to show that a sample of a person’s skin can be used to create stem cells. Using this technique, doctors can repair a patient’s heart after a heart attack.
“Luck favors the prepared mind,” Gurdon said. “90 percent of the time things don’t work, but when they do, you have to seize the chance. ”
21. Who won the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2012?

e. The egg cell grew into a clone of the adult frog.
A. b-a-c-d-e B. b-d-e-a-c C. b-d-a-c-e D. b-e-d-a-c
24. According to the passage, which statement is TRUE?
A. As a boy, Gurdon was told he was hopeful.

The day after Thanksgiving is the start of the holiday shopping season. Thanksgiving is always on Thursday in the U. S., so the day after is Friday. This day has come to be known as Black Friday. It has been the busiest shopping day of the year since 2005.
Most stores offer great deals on Black Friday. They open their doors in the small hours of the morning. They try to attract shoppers with big discounts. Some items like TVs are much cheaper than usual. Stores may even lose money on these items. They hope that shoppers will buy gifts for other people while they are in the store.
Black Friday is a great time to get good deals. The problem is that there are not enough low-priced items to go around. Each store may only have a few. These items are in high demand. People stand in long lines to get such great deals. They may line up hours before a store opens, hoping to buy a TV or a laptop at a low price, but not everyone who wants one will get one. Some people leave disappointed.
The situation can be tense. Some Black Friday events can even be dangerous. Large, eager crowds may lead to a stampede (踩踏事件). Fights may break out over competing for goods or cutting in line. People may quarrel with others over parking spots. But most Black Friday events are safe and fun. Still, if you plan on going, expect large crowds and a bit of pushing and shoving.
So where does the name “Black Friday” come from? It was first used in Philadelphia in the 1950s. The police called this day “Black Friday” because of the heavy traffic it drew. In the 1960s, it spread across the country. Now people all over the country take part in this event. It is even spreading to other parts of the world.
26. Why do stores set prices so low on some items that they lose money?
A. Because they want people to enjoy the holidays.
B. Because they are generous at the beginning of the holiday season.
C. Because they hope people will buy others gifts while they are in the store.
D. Because they are trying to get rid of old items.
27. Which best concludes the main idea of the third paragraph?
A. People stand in long lines on Black Friday.
B. Black Friday is a really disappointing time of the year.
C. Black Friday is the best time of the year to get good deals.

28. All of the following events are mentioned as negative aspects of Black Friday EXCEPT ________.
A. the possibility of a stampede
B. the possibility of fights over cutting in line

The silent library is a special reading space in many modern schools. Different from traditional libraries, it has strict rules to make sure everyone can read and study in a quiet environment. It has become a favorite place for students who need to focus on their work.
First, the silent library bans all loud noises. Students must turn their mobile phones to silent mode before entering. They are not allowed to talk or discuss homework with classmates. Even walking should be done quietly to avoid disturbing others. If someone breaks the rules, a librarian will give a gentle reminder.
Second, the silent library provides special facilities for learners. There are comfortable desks with lamps, and each seat has a small partition to create a private space. Some libraries also offer noise-canceling headphones for students who want to listen to soft music while reading. All books are well-organized by subject, so it’s easy for students to find what they need.

It is one of the most important traditional festivals in China. In fact, it is the first Chinese festival on the World Intangible Cultural Heritage List. The date is the fifth day of the fifth lunar month every year. People celebrate it to remember the great poet Qu Yuan. During the festival, people usually eat zongzi and watch dragon boat races.

b. Gurdon took a cell from an adult frog.
c. Yamanaka used a person’s skin to create stem cells.

e. The egg cell grew into a clone of the adult frog.

D. Black Friday deals are limited and not everyone will get one.
28. All of the following events are mentioned as negative aspects of Black Friday EXCEPT ________.
A. the possibility of a stampede
B. the possibility of fights over cutting in line
C. the delayed public transportation

Third, the silent library helps improve students’ study efficiency. A recent school survey shows that students who study in the silent library finish their homework 30% faster than those who study in classrooms. It also helps students develop good habits of concentration, which are useful for their future study and work.
