人教必修第三册 Unit 2 MORALS AND VIRTUES 阅读理解 [2020·全国新高考I卷, B篇阅读] Jennifer Mauer has needed more willpower than the typical college student to pursue her goal of earning a nursing degree. That willpower bore fruit when Jennifer graduated from University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire and became the first in her large family to earn a bachelor’s degree. Mauer, of Edgar, Wisconsin, grew up on a farm in a family of 10 children. Her dad worked at a job away from the farm, and her mother ran the farm with the kids. After high school, Jennifer attended a local technical college, working to pay her tuition(学费), because there was no extra money set aside for a college education. After graduation, she worked to help her sisters and brothers pay for their schooling. Jennifer now is married and has three children of her own. She decided to go back to college to advance her career and to be able to better support her family while doing something she loves: nursing. She chose the UW-Eau Claire programme at Ministry Saint Joseph’s Hospital in Marshfield because she was able to pursue her four-year degree close to home. She could drive to class and be home in the evening to help with her kids. Jennifer received great support from her family as she worked to earn her degree: her husband worked two jobs to cover the bills, and her 68-year-old mother helped take care of the children at times. Through it all, she remained in good academic standing and graduated with honours. Jennifer sacrificed(牺牲)to achieve her goal, giving up many nights with her kids and missing important events to study. “Some nights my heart was breaking to have to pick between my kids and studying for exams or papers,” she says. However, her children have learned an important lesson witnessing their mother earn her degree. Jennifer is a first-generation graduate and an inspiration to her family—and that’s pretty powerful. ( )4.What did Jennifer do after high school? A. She helped her dad with his work. B. She ran the family farm on her own. C. She supported herself through college. D. She taught her sisters and brothers at home. ( )5.Why did Jennifer choose the programme at Ministry Saint Joseph’s Hospital in Marshfield? A. To take care of her kids easily. B. Her reputation. D. Her chance of promotion. ( )7.What can we learn from Jennifer’s story? A. Time is money. B. Love breaks down barriers. C. Hard work pays off. D. Education is the key to success. 根据第二段“After high school, Jennifer attended a local technical college, working to pay her tuition(学费), because there was no extra money set aside for a college education.” 根据文章第三段“She could drive to class and be home in the evening to help with her kids.” 根据第四段“Jennifer sacrificed(牺牲) to achieve her goal, giving up many nights with her kids and missing important events to study.” 特别根据最后一段“However, her children have learned an important lesson witnessing their mother earn her degree. Jennifer is a first-generation graduate and an inspiration to her family—and that’s pretty powerful.” 七选五 [2025·全国一卷] An unsung hero Need a break between classes or just a quick pick-me-up in the morning? The College Cafe has just that, and more. 36.     Catherine Murphy, a cafe worker in a green shirt and black hat, makes sure that each customer gets exactly what they order. She goes back and forth between machines to make the drinks. 37. As the customer grabs the drink from her hand, she smiles and says, “Hello, how is your day?” Even when the line is getting longer, she doesn􀆳t let it get in the way of her genuine conversations.   Murphy gets up at a quarter to five and drives thirty minutes every day to get to work on time. 38. “I do so because I like to make coffee for the students. I know they need it in the morning,” Murphy said. Being a mother and wife has helped her become the woman she is. She believes she is here to serve.   One thing Murphy may not know is that her smile is contagious(有感染力)and can be the difference in a student having a much better day than they were having before seeing her. Joanna Wright, a senior political science major, loves coffee and goes to the cafe at least six days a week. 39. “Catherine always has a huge smile on her face, which always puts me in a cheerful mood,” Wright said.   “I enjoy working in the cafe,” Murphy said. 40. She has every intention of staying and continuing doing what she loves.   A.The cafe closes at 9 pm every day. B.She has two children aged eight and four. C.Sometimes she arrives early to serve the students early. D.After finishing an order, she calls out the name on the cup. E.Not only does this cafe serve up drinks, it also serves up smiles. F.Going to the cafe starts her day off good and gets her ready for class. G.She has served here for 17 years and can􀆳t imagine working anywhere else. 36.E 根据上文“Need a break between classes or just a quick pick-me-up in the morning? The College Cafe has just that, and more.”(课间需要休息或早上需要快速提神? E选项“Not only does this cafe serve up drinks, it also serves up smiles.”(这家咖啡馆不仅提供饮品,还提供微笑。) 37.D 根据上文“She goes back and forth between machines to make the drinks.”(她在机器之间来回穿梭以制作饮品。)及下文“As the customer grabs the drink from her hand, she smiles and says, ‘Hello, how is your day?’ Even when the line is getting longer, she doesn􀆳t let it get in the way of her genuine conversations.”(当顾客从她手中接过饮品时,她微笑着说:“你好,今天过得怎么样?” D选项“After finishing an order, she calls out the name on the cup.”(完成订单后,她会喊出杯子上的名字。)中的finishing an order衔接make the drinks, calls out the name引出顾客接过饮品的场景,形成“制作—叫号—交付”的完整流程。故选D项。 38.C 根据上文“Murphy gets up at a quarter to five and drives thirty minutes every day to get to work on time.”(墨菲每天四点四十五起床,开车三十分钟,以便准时上班。)及下文“I do so because I like to make coffee for the students.”(我这样做是因为我喜欢为学生煮咖啡。) C选项“Sometimes she arrives early to serve the students early.”(有时她会提前到达,提前为学生服务。)中的arrives early补充了“准时上班”之外的主动性,serve the students early呼应like to make coffee for the students,展现其敬业精神。故选C项。 39.F 根据上文“Joanna Wright, a senior political science major, loves coffee and goes to the cafe at least six days a week.”(乔安娜·赖特是政治学专业的大四学生,她喜欢咖啡,每周至少去这家咖啡馆六天。)及下文“‘Catherine always has a huge smile on her face, which always puts me in a cheerful mood,’ Wright said.”(赖特说:“凯瑟琳总是笑容满面,这总能让我心情愉快。”) F选项“Going to the cafe starts her day off good and gets her ready for class.”(去咖啡馆让她一天有个好的开始,并为上课做好准备。)中的starts her day off good解释了“每周去六天”的原因。故选F项。 40.G 根据下文“She has every intention of staying and continuing doing what she loves.”(她打算一直留在这里,继续做自己喜欢的事。) G选项“She has served here for 17 years and can􀆳t imagine working anywhere else.”(她已经在这里服务了17年,无法想象在其他地方工作。) Personal forgiveness Taking responsibility for mistakes is a positive step, but don􀆳t beat yourself up about them. To err (犯错) is human. 36. You can use the following writing exercise to help you do this.  In a journal or on a piece of paper, put the heading “Personal strengths.” 37. Are you caring? Creative? Generous? A good listener? Fun to be around? They don􀆳t have to be world-changing, just aspects of your personality that you􀆳re proud of.  At the top of a second page, put the heading “Acts of kindness.” On this one, list all the positive things you􀆳ve done for others. It might be the time when you helped a friend with their homework, when you did the ironing without being asked, or when you baked cookies after the family had had a tiring day.38.     You could ask a friend or family member to help add to your list. 39. That way, you could exchange thoughts on what makes each of you special and the aspects of your personality that shine through. In fact, don􀆳t wait until you􀆳ve made a mistake to try this—it􀆳s a great way to boost self-confidence at any time.   It􀆳s something of a cliché (陈词滥调) that most people learn not from their successes but their mistakes. The thing is, it􀆳s true. 40. We􀆳re all changing and learning all the time and mistakes are a positive way to develop and grow.  A.A little self-forgiveness also goes a long way. B.Now list all the characteristics you like about yourself. C.They might even like to have a go at doing the exercise. D.It􀆳s just as important to show yourself some forgiveness. E.It doesn􀆳t mean you have to ignore what􀆳s happened or forget it. F.Whatever it is, no matter how small it might seem, write it down. G.Whatever the mistake, remember it isn􀆳t a fixed aspect of your personality. 36.D 根据空前“Taking responsibility for mistakes is a positive step, but don􀆳t beat yourself up about them. To err(犯错) is human.”(为错误负责是积极的一步,但不要为错误而过分自责。孰能无过。)可知,作者认为人都会犯错,勇于承担责任固然重要,但是也不要因此而过于自责。结合空后“You can use the following writing exercise to help you do this.”(你可以使用下面的写作练习来帮助你做到这一点。) D “It􀆳s just as important to show yourself some forgiveness.” 37.B 根据空前内容“In a journal or on a piece of paper, put the heading ‘Personal strengths.’”及空后“Are you caring? Creative? Generous? A good listener? Fun to be around?” B “Now list all the characteristics you like about yourself.” 38.F 根据上文内容“At the top of a second page, put the heading ‘Acts of kindness.’ On this one, list all the positive things you􀆳ve done for others. It might be the time when you helped a friend with their homework, when you did the ironing without being asked, or when you baked cookies after the family had had a tiring day.”(在第二页的顶部,写上“善举”的标题。 F “Whatever it is, no matter how small it might seem, write it down.” 39.C 根据空后内容“That way, you could exchange thoughts on what makes each of you special and the aspects of your personality that shine through.”(那样,你们就可以交换意见,谈谈是什么让你们每个人都与众不同,以及你们个性中闪光的方面。) C “They might even like to have a go at doing the exercise.(他们甚至可能更想试一试做这个练习。)”符合语境,C项中的they与空前的a friend or family member保持一致。故选C。 40.G 根据空后内容“We􀆳re all changing and learning all the time and mistakes are a positive way to develop and grow.”(我们一直在改变和学习,错误是一种积极的发展和成长的方式。) G “Whatever the mistake, remember it isn􀆳t a fixed aspect of your personality.” Tricks to becoming a more patient person Here􀆳s a riddle: What do traffic jams, long lines and waiting for a vacation to start all have in common? There􀆳s one answer: 36. .  In the Digital Age,we􀆳re used to having what we need immediately and right at our fingertips. However, research suggests that if we practised patience, we􀆳d be a whole lot better off. Here are several tricks. ●Practise gratitude(感激) Thankfulness has a lot of benefits: research shows it makes us happier, less stressed and even more optimistic. 37. . “Showing thankfulness can foster self-control,” said Ye Li, researcher at the University of California.  ●Make yourself wait Instant gratification(满足) may seem like the most “feel good” option at the time, but psychology research suggests waiting for things actually makes us happier in the long run. And the only way for us to get into the habit of waiting is to practise. 38. . Put off watching your favourite show until the weekend or wait 10 extra minutes before going for that cake. You􀆳ll soon find that the more patience you practise, the more you start to apply it to other, more annoying situations.  ●39.     So many of us have the belief that being comfortable is the only state we will tolerate, and when we experience something outside of our comfort zone, we get impatient about the circumstances. You should learn to say to yourself, “40. .” You􀆳ll then gradually become more patient.  A.Find your causes B.Start with small tasks C.Accept the uncomfortable D.All this adds up to a state of hurry E.It can also help us practise more patience F.This is merely uncomfortable, not intolerable G.They􀆳re all situations where we could use a little extra patience 【文章大意】 本文是一篇说明文。 G项“They􀆳re all situations where we could use a little extra patience” (它们都是我们可以多花一点额外的耐心的情况)能够承接上文。故选G。 37.E 根据空前句“Thankfulness has a lot of benefits: research shows it makes us happier, less stressed and even more optimistic.” 空后“Showing thankfulness can foster self-control…” E“It can also help us practise more patience”(它也可以帮助我们培养更多耐心)符合语境,故选E。 38.B 根据空后内容“Put off watching your favourite show until the weekend or wait 10 extra minutes before going for that cake.” 39.C 根据空后句“So many of us have the belief that being comfortable is the only state we will tolerate, and when we experience something outside of our comfort zone, we get impatient about the circumstances.” 40.F 根据空前“…when we experience something outside of our comfort zone, we get impatient about the circumstances.”及空后“You􀆳ll then gradually become more patient.” F“This is merely uncomfortable, not intolerable”(这只是令人不舒服的,而不是无法忍受的)符合语境。故选F。 [2020·全国卷I] A few tips for self-acceptance We all want it…to accept and love ourselves. But at times it seems too difficult and too far out of reach. 36. Here’s a handful of ways that will set you in the right direction.  37. Do not follow the people who make you feel not-good-enough. Why do you follow them? Are you hoping that eventually you will feel empowered because your life is better than theirs? Know that your life is your own;you are the only you in this world.  Forgive yourself for mistakes that you have made. We are often ashamed of our shortcomings, our mistakes and our failures. 38. You will make mistakes, time and time again. Rather than getting caught up in how you could have done better, why not offer yourself a compassionate (有同情心的) response? “That didn’t go as planned. But, I tried my best.”  Recognize all of your strengths. Write them down in a journal. Begin to train your brain to look at strength before weakness. List all of your accomplishments and achievements. You have a job, earned your degree, and you got out of bed today. 39.       Now that you’ve listed your strengths, list your imperfections. Turn the page in your journal. Put into words why you feel unworthy, why you don’t feel good enough. Now, read these words back to yourself. 40. Turn to a page in your journal to your list of strengths and achievements. See how awesome you are?  A.Feeling upset again? B.Where do you start? C.Nothing is too small to celebrate. D.Remember, you are only human. E.Set an intention for self-acceptance. F.Stop comparing yourself with others. G.When does the comparison game start? 故选A。 On Oct. 11, hundreds of runners competed in a cross-country race in Minnesota. She would have struggled with extreme 50 to make it to that aid checkpoint without Bailey􀆳s help.   As for Bailey, she is more 51 about why her act is considered a big 52 . “She was just crying. The first time we 41 there, we heard the chug-chug-chug of a motorbike 42 its way down the hill towards us. It was a 43 called Mario, coming to 44 us a box containing some tomatoes and a bottle of wine. It was a very nice 45 for him to make. But when we looked at the tomatoes, we were 46 because they were so misshapen: not at all like the nice, round, 47 things you get in a supermarket. And the wine was cloudy, in a funny old bottle with no label(标签) on it. These can􀆳t be any 48 , we thought. But we were 49 his kindness, so we 50 them.  What we discovered is that it􀆳s 51 to judge what you eat only by its 52 . Those tomatoes had a 53 that reminded me of the ones my uncle used to grow when I was a child. Nowadays supermarket tomatoes 54 perfect but taste of water. She had prepared lots of snacks, while my job was to have the backyard in order. There was plenty of space for the kids to run and play. There was just one thing I hadn􀆳t counted on: my brother chose to bring his dog Toby, a 50-pound ball of fire. Though friendly, he could easily knock over my niece􀆳s small boys and my six-month-old granddaughter. So, when my brother showed up, I asked him to watch Toby and keep him outside. My plan was working out just fine. Toby was using up his energy by running back and forth in the backyard and giving the kids plenty of room. Unexpectedly, after supper, the weather changed. It started to rain and everyone went indoors. It was an awkward moment. I didn􀆳t want Toby to be running around in the house, and my brother wasn􀆳t happy with driving home with a wet dog. Eventually, my brother decided to leave rather than force the issue. A few days passed, and I hadn􀆳t heard anything from my brother. I texted him and expressed wishes for him to come out again. His reply came as a surprise—a shock, actually: “Not a chance.” Clearly, he was unhappy over the way we had parted. After all, I had left him little choice. Well, he􀆳ll get over it, I reasoned. Two months passed. My wife suggested I get in touch with my brother, but I resisted, thinking he should call first. However, my conscience (良心) kept bothering me. I tried to put myself in my brother􀆳s shoes. He was facing health issues and his wife of thirty-five years had passed away a few months earlier. Toby was his constant companion, the one who kept him going. 注意: 续写词数应为150个左右。 Paragraph 1: I realized it was me who was at fault.     Paragraph 2: With the biscuits my wife had made, I arrived at my brother􀆳s door. One possible version: I realized it was me who was at fault. I had been so focused on keeping the party under control that I failed to consider how important Toby was to my brother during this difficult time. My pride had kept me from reaching out, and now months had passed without a proper conversation. One evening, I picked up the phone and left him a voice message, apologizing for my behaviour and asking if we could meet. To my relief, he called back the next day, and we agreed to get together soon. With the biscuits my wife had made, I arrived at my brother􀆳s door. He opened it with a surprised smile, and for a moment, neither of us spoke. Then we hugged—something we hadn􀆳t done since before his wife passed away. We sat on the porch with Toby resting beside us, and I handed him the box of biscuits. “Thank you,” he said quietly. We talked for hours, laughing, remembering old times, and slowly rebuilding what had been lost. As I watched Toby gently rest his head on my brother􀆳s leg, I knew we were finally on the path to healing. [2025·浙江1月考] Kevin was pretty bored. His mother was at work, and his father had been away on business. Therefore, he was left in the care of Mrs Hill, an old lady who lived next door. His parents had raised the 12-year-old to be a good boy. He never got into trouble, though sometimes he wanted to do risky things. Mrs Hill was asleep. Kevin sighed (叹息) and hoped something exciting would happen. Suddenly, a movement outside caught his eye. Mrs Hill􀆳s front window faced Mr and Mrs Green􀆳s house across the street. The couple had both gone to work, so it was strange that someone was over there. Kevin stared at the man at their front door. Suddenly, the man jumped through an open window into the house. With his heart in his mouth, Kevin grabbed Mrs Hill􀆳s home phone and called the police. Thinking that the man might get away with whatever he wanted before the police arrived, Kevin decided to do something. He rushed out of Mrs Hill􀆳s house and crossed the street quickly. Grabbing a branch from a cut-down tree, he jumped in through the window. “Stop right there! You must leave right now!” he called out, holding the branch with both hands. The man froze for a second, but when he saw the skinny boy he breathed a sigh of relief. “Hey, kid, put that down. It was my home. My parents used to live here and my father􀆳s watch was here,” he explained, trying to lift a floorboard. At that moment, the sounds of a police car echoed (回响) in the air. The man stood up in a panic, then ran through the house towards the window and jumped out. Kevin followed out and told the arriving police officers what had happened. They pursued and arrested the man. Kevin went back to Mrs Hill􀆳s house. Somehow he wasn􀆳t sure he had done the right thing. “What if he has told the truth?” he thought to himself. The man􀆳s words sounded pretty convincing. 注意: 1.续写词数应为150个左右; 2.请按如下格式在相应位置作答。 Paragraph 1: When Mr and Mrs Green got home, Kevin went to talk to them.     Paragraph 2: Kevin and Mr Green took the watch they had found to the police station. Possible version 1: When Mr and Mrs Green got home, Kevin went to talk to them. He described the whole process to Mr and Mrs Green in a vivid and lifelike manner. With Kevin􀆳s description over, the Greens􀆳 jaws dropped and they thanked him a thousand and one times. Kevin declined their thanks proudly, but at the same time he expressed his doubts as well—he wasn􀆳t sure whether the man was telling the truth. When the Greens pieced together the details Kevin had mentioned, they looked around, confirming that nothing had been stolen from the house. So they decided to check if there was really a watch. They really found a watch just lying under the floor. After repeatedly checking, Mr and Mrs Green confirmed the watch was not theirs, which was enough to show that the man was not a thief. Kevin and Mr Green took the watch they had found to the police station. All the details were exactly the same as what the man had stated. The police returned the watch to the man, released him, and warned him that he must get back his own property through proper means. Seeing the man released, Kevin finally breathed a sigh of relief. At the same time, he walked up to the man awkwardly to apologize to him. Surprisingly, the man didn􀆳t blame him, but praised him for his bravery and kindness. Mr Green also patted Kevin on the shoulder, giving him a thumbs-up. Hearing their praise, Kevin was over the moon, feeling that it was his bravery and consideration that led him to do the right thing. Possible version 2: When Mr and Mrs Green got home, Kevin went to talk to them. On arriving, he poured out the whole story without stopping—how a stranger had broken into their house. Hearing Kevin􀆳s words, Mr and Mrs Green looked at each other with a mixture of shock and disbelief. But they had the same uncertainty—“What if he has told the truth?” After a moment of silence, they decided to dig out the truth. Kevin led them to the exact floorboard the man had tried to lift while Mr Green, grabbing a stick in his hand, carefully lifted the floorboard. To everyone􀆳s surprise, they discovered a watch lying quietly beneath it. Frozen for a second, Kevin let out a sigh of regret and said anxiously, “Hurry! Let􀆳s go to the police station right now.” Kevin and Mr Green took the watch they had found to the police station. The police officers looked up as they entered. Mr Green immediately handed the watch to a policeman. Kevin blushed with embarrassment, admitting that he had mistaken the man for a thief. When the police officer returned the watch to the man, he, in tears of gratitude, quickly explained that the watch was actually a cherished keepsake for his father who urged him to get it back as soon as possible. Fully convinced this time, Kevin said guiltily, “Sorry for the trouble I􀆳ve made.” The man shook his head gently, “No. You did the right thing.” Then he turned to Mr Green, “Sorry I made the trouble too.” With the truth unveiled, the two men and the 12-year-old boy all felt relieved and beamed in delight. [2024·新课标Ⅰ卷] I met Gunter on a cold, wet and unforgettable evening in September. I had planned to fly to Vienna and take a bus to Prague for a conference. Due to a big storm, my flight had been delayed by an hour and a half. I touched down in Vienna just 30 minutes before the departure of the last bus to Prague. The moment I got off the plane, I ran like crazy through the airport building and jumped into the first taxi on the rank without a second thought. That was when I met Gunter. I told him where I was going, but he said he hadn􀆳t heard of the bus station. I thought my pronunciation was the problem, so I explained again more slowly, but he still looked confused. When I was about to give up, Gunter fished out his little phone and rang up a friend. After a heated discussion that lasted for what seemed like a century, Gunter put his phone down and started the car. Finally, with just two minutes to spare we rolled into the bus station. Thankfully, there was a long queue (队列) still waiting to board the bus. Gunter parked the taxi behind the bus, turned around, and looked at me with a big smile on his face.“We made it,” he said. Just then I realised that I had zero cash in my wallet. I flashed him an apologetic smile as I pulled out my Portuguese bankcard. He tried it several times, but the card machine just did not play along. A feeling of helplessness washed over me as I saw the bus queue thinning out. At this moment, Gunter pointed towards the waiting hall of the bus station. There, at the entrance, was a cash machine. I jumped out of the car, made a mad run for the machine, and popped my card in, only to read the message: “Out of order. Sorry.” 注意:续写词数应为150个左右。 Paragraph 1: I ran back to Gunter and told him the bad news.      Paragraph 2: Four days later, when I was back in Vienna, I called Gunter as promised. Possible version 1: I ran back to Gunter and told him the bad news. He looked at me in disbelief, asking me what to do. Flashing him another apologetic smile, I begged him for a delayed payment. “If I miss this last bus to Prague, I􀆳ll be late for the conference which is so important that I can􀆳t afford to miss it!” I explained. “May I have your phone number? I will call you and return the money I owe you. I promise I will keep my word or you keep my watch!” I added, handing him my watch as well as my business card. Gunter accepted my business card but rejected my watch. He wrote down his phone number and gave it to me. “Just keep your promise, sir.” A feeling of gratitude washed over me as I heard his words. Giving him a firm handshake, I jumped out of the car, made a mad run for the bus, and jumped onto it just before its departure. Four days later, when I was back in Vienna, I called Gunter as promised. He picked me up at the bus station where he had dropped me off four days before. Beaming a warm smile at him, I gave him a big hug the moment I saw him. We chatted happily on the way to the airport. I told him that thanks to his generosity and timely help, everything had gone smoothly. When he stopped his taxi outside the airport, I paid him for the “double car rides”, back and forth from the airport to the bus station, together with a generous tip that he turned down. I also gave him an attractive souvenir I had bought at Prague, which he accepted with delight. We became good friends and kept in touch with each other regularly. I felt blessed to have such a warm-hearted friend like Gunter. Possible version 2: I ran back to Gunter and told him the bad news. I explained to him the urgency of catching the bus, emphasizing that otherwise I would be forced to sit overnight and buy a new ticket the next morning. Ultimately, I suggested, “I will return to Vienna in 4 days. If it􀆳s OK with you, I can pay you then, with an additional 10 euros as a gesture of my gratitude.” After an uncomfortable pause, he simply nodded, saying,“I agree to this arrangement and trust you.” I thanked him with the biggest smile and we exchanged contact information before I got on the bus. Four days later, when I was back in Vienna, I called Gunter as promised. We arranged to meet at the airport, and upon our arrival, we hugged each other like long-lost friends. When I gave him the extra 10 euros I had promised, he didn􀆳t accept. “Buy me a beer next time you are in Vienna,” he said with a warm smile. Then we parted ways with a firm handshake and a promise to keep in touch. Gunter􀆳s kindness had turned a potentially disastrous evening into a memorable story I would cherish for years to come. 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
