341 On the beach of San Miguel, a Mexican surf heaven in Todos Santos Bay, Ensenada, a small freshwater stream flows into the bay. While it doesn’t look like much, this connection of stream and sea is key to the bay’s famous surf break. For years, though, this delicate bond has been threatened by illegal landfills and proposed projects to expand the port facilities of Ensenada. “The construction of coastal protection infrastructure (基础设施) is especially lethal to waves,” says Salazar, a local surfer. Three breakwaters have been responsible for wave extinction in Ensenada: two of them built to secure ports and a third constructed to protect a gas company. Although the biologists and surfers could see they urgently needed a conservation plan, the big question was how to design a project attractive enough for local politicians to get on board. So from 2014 to 2015, Trent E. Hodges, conservation programme manager of Save The Waves Coalition (STW), an international nonprofit committed to the protection of surf ecosystems around the world, studied the surfing activity of several hot spots in Todos Santos Bay in Ensenada using “surfonomics”, a methodology adopted by STW to measure the economic influence of surfing. His study revealed that tourists had an average budget per day of US $111 and stayed an average of 10 days. Combined, the expenditures of tourists and local surfers ranged from $746,000 to $969,000 annually. With the surfonomics data on board, the wave protection movement entered a new stage. In 2021, Arroyo San Miguel State Park was established and it was the first state park in Baja California. For now, San Miguel’s waves keep rolling in. Surfers watch for them; children laugh and play near the stream that helps create them. This unique state park in Mexico seems to be ringing with the sounds of community and cooperation, nature and conservation, and the waves that will, hopefully, keep breaking far into the future. Together, these seem like a victory song. ( )1.What does the underlined word “lethal” in Paragraph 2 mean? A.Extremely harmful. B.Directly beneficial. C.Highly responsive. D.Relatively sensitive. ( )2.What might be a logical starting point for involving politicians in wave conservation? A.Urgent need for coastal protection. B.Environmental impact of wave loss. C.Economic benefits from surf tourism. D.Wave extinction in Todos Santos Bay. ( )3.What’s the main idea of Paragraph 4? A.The data collected by Hodges. B.The implications of Hodges’ study. C.The current situation of surf tourism. D.The process of wave protection movement. ( )4.What does the author think of the establishment of the State Park? A.It’s a short-term fix. B.It’s the result of joint efforts. C.It’s only a temporary success. D.It’s a once-and-for-all victory. 333 People often visit national parks to catch a glimpse of wildlife. But how does our presence impact the animals we hope to see? A study has found that even in remote, rarely visited national parks, the presence of just a few humans impacts the activity of wildlife that lives there. The research team based its study in Glacier Bay National Park & Preserve, a coastal area in southeast Alaska that is accessible only by boat or plane. Most visitors arrive on cruise ships, but the boats don’t dock on shore, and the park has very little human foot traffic. With only about 40,000 visitors each year, Glacier Bay is an ideal place to explore the lower limits where humans start to affect wildlife behaviour. By controlling where and when people could access certain areas of Glacier Bay and then measuring wildlife responses to the differing levels of human activity, the researchers discovered that wildlife detection plummeted once visitors appeared in an area, showing an obvious low tolerance wildlife had for the presence of people nearby. Of the animal species studied, wolves were most likely to disappear from cameras when people were around. Brown bears were the least impacted by human presence. Moose, however, were most active during the times of day and at locations where people were seen. The researchers think that moose might be using humans as a protection from predators. “I expect that similar results could be found in other national parks. I wouldn’t be surprised if more and more people seek out less popular national parks to explore, which will have important implications for park management and wildlife,” said lead author Mira Sytsma. The researchers hope this study can help park managers consider different approaches to making parks accessible both to humans and animals. For example, managers could consider concentrating paths and human use in certain areas to reduce their total footprints or put restrictions on the time of year or days in which people can visit. ( )5.Why was Glacier Bay chosen for the study? A.It is easily accessible by boat and plane. B.It has a low number of tourists. C.It is popular for its natural beauty. D.It has a wide variety of wildlife. ( )6.What does the underlined word “plummeted” probably mean? A.Decreased. B.Increased. C.Returned. D.Occurred. ( )7.Which species is most likely to enjoy the company of humans according to the research findings? A.Black bears. B.Moose. C.Wolves. D.Brown bears. ( )8.What does this study suggest that park managers should do? A.Limit human access to certain areas and times. B.Encourage wildlife to adapt to human presence. C.Allow unrestricted access to all areas of the park. D.Close the park to protect wildlife from humans. 274 When I stood on a hill at Cliveden Gardens on a sunny winter day, its dark-green lake surrounded by centuries-old trees took my breath away. 1. It’s just a local park near London that I’d never heard of during my eight years living in the UK. As I admired the serene garden, it taught me a lesson about the British culture of understatement.  “The English landscape is more beautiful because its beauty is understated,” my friend Will said to me later as we walked through an exhibition at Tate Britain. He pointed to a painting of a peaceful countryside. “This is the landscape I grew up with,” he said. Unlike grand waterfalls or wild forests, this scenery doesn’t shout about its beauty. 2.       I wonder if Chinese tourists will explore beyond London. 3. Indeed, Oxford and Cambridge and the beloved Lake District National Park are some iconic symbols of Britain. But it would be a pity if they miss out on the lesser-known parts of the English landscape.  4. I remember a straight-A classmate once telling me he “survived exams” and another friend from Oxford introducing himself as “studying in the countryside”. This modesty also has its mirror in Chinese culture. I remember my parents’ telling me to work hard but not to brag about my achievements. Chinese culture is full of proverbs such as “real gold will shine sooner or later”, to encourage long-term dedication to one’s chosen area of expertise.  Experiencing both cultures, I’ve realized that the English and Chinese both express achievements with understatement. 5. It reflects the unspoken charm in both British and Chinese traditions. And it’s an off-the-beaten-path attraction well worth exploration.  A.Cliveden isn’t a famous holiday place. B.Rather, its beauty is reserved for the locals only. C.I’ve been impressed by British humour all the time. D.They tend to prefer places with a strong reputation. E.But the more I looked, the more I saw its quiet elegance. F.Over the years, I’ve become familiar with British modesty. G.This mix makes me appreciate the unusual beauty of Cliveden. Dear Tom,                     Yours, Li Hua A.词汇积累 1.illegal adj. Although the biologists and surfers could see they urgently needed a conservation plan, the big question was how to design a project attractive enough for local politicians to get on board. So from 2014 to 2015, Trent E. Hodges, conservation programme manager of Save The Waves Coalition (STW), an international nonprofit committed to the protection of surf ecosystems around the world, studied the surfing activity of several hot spots in Todos Santos Bay in Ensenada using “surfonomics”, a methodology adopted by STW to measure the economic influence of surfing. conservation programme manager of Save The Waves Coalition 为主语Trent E. Hodges的同位语;an international nonprofit committed to the protection of surf ecosystems around the world为Save The Waves Coalition (STW)的同位语;using “surfonomics”为方式状语,后接同位语解释 “surfonomics”;同位语为a methodology adopted by STW to measure the economic influence of surfing, adopted by STW为过去分词短语作定语,修饰methodology。 根据画线词上文“The construction of coastal protection infrastructure(基础设施)…”以及下文“Three breakwaters have been responsible for wave extinction…” 故选A。 根据第三段“Although the biologists and surfers could see they urgently needed a conservation plan, the big…measure the economic influence of surfing.” 根据第四段“His study revealed that tourists…established and it was the first state park in Baja California.” 根据最后一段“This unique state park in Mexico seems to be ringing with the sounds of community and cooperation, nature and conservation, and the waves that will, hopefully, keep breaking far into the future. Together, these seem like a victory song.” 根据第二段“With only about 40,000 visitors each year, Glacier Bay is an ideal place to explore the lower limits where humans start to affect wildlife behaviour.” 根据第三段“…showing an obvious low tolerance wildlife had for the presence of people nearby.” 根据第三段“Moose, however, were most active during the times of day and at locations where people were seen. The researchers think that moose might be using humans as a protection from predators.” 根据最后一段“For example, managers could consider concentrating paths and human use in certain areas to reduce their total footprints or put restrictions on the time of year or days in which people can visit.” 1.A 根据上文“When I stood on a hill at Cliveden Gardens on a…trees took my breath away.”以及后文“It’s just a local park near…the British culture of understatement.” 2.E 根据上文“‘The English landscape is more beautiful because its beauty is understated,’ my friend Will said to me later as we walked through an exhibition at Tate Britain. He pointed to a painting of a peaceful countryside. ‘This is the landscape I grew up with,’ he said. Unlike grand waterfalls or wild forests, this scenery doesn’t shout about its beauty.” 3.D 根据上文“I wonder if Chinese tourists will explore beyond London.”(我想知道中国游客是否会去伦敦以外的地方旅游。)以及后文“Indeed, Oxford and Cambridge and the beloved Lake…English landscape.” 4.F 根据本段内容“I remember a straight-A classmate once…to one’s chosen area of expertise.” 5.G 根据上文“Experiencing both cultures, I’ve realized that…understatement.”(体验了这两种文化,我意识到英国人和中国人都低调地表达成就。)以及后文“It reflects the unspoken charm in…attraction well worth exploration.” G。 ●ⅢOne possible version: Dear Tom,  How’s it going? I’m excited to share my unforgettable trip to the Ocean Park last Sunday with you. The moment I stepped into the park (时间状语从句), I was fascinated by the vibrant marine world. The colourful sea creatures were so charming that I couldn’t take my eyes off them (结果状语从句). During the trip, I also participated in a photography contest with the theme “Wonderful Ocean Moments”. My entry featured a dolphin gracefully leaping out of the water (v.-ing作定语), its body shining in the sunlight (独立主格结构)—a perfect representation of the park’s beauty and vitality. I’m looking forward to hearing about your recent adventures and exchanging ideas about photography. Let’s catch up soon!
