Cockatoos (凤头鹦鹉) are smart. Past studies show they can solve difficult problems, use tools, and even speak like humans. Now, researchers have discovered these birds have learned to use sauce (调味汁) when having food, possibly to improve its taste.
Dr Jeroen Zewald and his team learned about this by accident. They noticed two pet cockatoos dipping (蘸) their food into blueberry yogurt during breakfast. To make sure the birds were trying to make their food delicious, the researchers did 14 tests with a group of 18 birds. Each bird has 30 minutes to choose bowls with spaghetti, cauliflowers (菜花), potatoes or carrots. The birds were also given a choice of three dips—blueberry yogurt, common yogurt and water.
The cockatoos showed no interest in the carrots and cauliflowers. However, they enjoyed the spaghetti and potatoes. Nine of them even dipped them into the blueberry yogurt before eating. They pulled, rolled and dipped the spaghetti into the yogurt, fully coating it. Since spaghetti was already soft, it made the researchers think that the birds were trying to make it easier to eat.
The scientists shared their findings on February 10, 2025. Since only half of the cockatoos did the dipping, they believe this is a newly learned habit. It is unclear whether one bird taught the others or if each discovered it on their own. The team plans to continue (继续) watching the 18 birds. They are interested to see if the rest of the group starts dipping their food as well.
16. What can cockatoos do according to the past studies?
① They can make use of tools. ② They can find and cook food.
③ They can solve difficult problems. ④ They can talk like humans sometimes.
A. ①②③ B. ①②④ C. ①③④ D. ②③④
17. How did researchers prove (证明) their findings were right?
A. By writing a report. B. By giving an example. C. By making a prediction. D. By doing an experiment (实验).
18. Which food did the cockatoos like in the tests?
A. Carrots and cauliflowerers. B. Spaghetti and potatoes. C. Blueberry yogurt only. D. Common yogurt and water.
19. If the writer continues the passage, what will be talked about next?
A. How cockatoos learned the dipping skill. B. When the rest of group will dip their food.
C. Whether the rest of group will dip their food. D. Who cockatoos learned the dipping skill from.
20. What can we infer from the passage?
A. Cockatoos are endangered. B. Cockatoos love spaghetti best.
C. Cockatoos are cleverer than humans. D. Cockatoos like tasty food better like humans.

The Spring Festival is the most important holiday for Chinese people. No matter how far away they are, family members always try their best to get together.
Zhu Liang, a Chinese soldier, works at the border (边境) area in Mohe city, Heilongjiang. In winter, the sky often goes dark before 4 pm and the temperature there can fall below -30°C or even -40°C. Zhu and other soldiers usually patrol (巡逻) once a day.
During the 2025 Spring Festival, they patrolled twice a day, walking about 10 kilometers. Because there was snow everywhere, it usually took them about 4 to 5 hours to finish a patrol. However, Zhu never told his wife about the hard work. “I don’t want her to get worried,” said Zhu.
But to Zhu’s surprise, his wife and their two children made a 3,300-kilometer trip to visit him and spend the Spring Festival. They took trains and planes, and finally reached Mohe after two days. Though it was a long way, the children didn’t complain (抱怨). “They know how important their father’s work is,” said Zhu’s wife.
Zhu took his family to the country’s northernmost outpost (前哨). Zhu, his wife, and their two children took a photo there. It was their very first family photo.

【答案】16. C 17. D 18. B 19. C 20. D

【导语】本文是一篇说明文,主要介绍研究发现凤头鹦鹉会蘸食物吃,可能为改善口味,这是新习得的行为,研究者将继续观察。
【16题详解】
原文第一段提到“Past studies show they can solve difficult problems, use tools, and even speak like humans.”(过去的研究表明,它们能解决复杂问题、使用工具,甚至像人类一样说话。),①make use of tools(利用工具)、③solve difficult problems(解决难题)、④talk like humans sometimes(有时像人类一样说话),所以选①③④。
原文第三段提到“The cockatoos showed no interest in the carrots and cauliflowers. However, they enjoyed the spaghetti and potatoes.”,凤头鹦鹉对胡萝卜和花椰菜毫无兴趣,但它们很喜欢意大利面和土豆。
【19题详解】
原文结尾提到“They are interested to see if the rest of the group starts dipping their food as well.”,“if”意为“是否”,即关注的是“其余鸟儿是否会蘸食”,而不是“如何学会”“何时学会”或“跟谁学会”。
A(濒危)、B(最爱意面)、C(比人类聪明)均无法从文中合理推断。
