One night, my older brother Tommy and I started fighting in the kitchen. He said I was weak and silly. I felt really hurt, so I ran to my room and shut the door. I sat on my bed and cried.
About 20 minutes later, I heard Mom walking outside. She knocked on my door and asked in a low voice, “Kevin, do you want to talk with me?” I didn’t answer. I was too sad to speak. She tried again. Still, I said nothing.
Then I saw a piece of paper slip under my door. It said, “If you don’t want to talk, we can write notes to each other.” I read it but still didn’t want to reply. I just sat in the dark, feeling sad.
Half an hour later, I finally picked up a pen. I wrote down everything that was in my heart. My note said, “No one in this family loves me. I am not the youngest or the oldest, and I am not the smartest. Tommy thinks I am too weak, and Dad wishes he had another Kevin who is better at basketball. You’re never around to even notice me.” I pushed the note out under the door.
Soon, Mom wrote back: “Kevin, I do love you, and everyone in this family loves you.”
I was still crying softly. A few minutes later, I wrote another note: “Thanks!” She asked, “For what?” I replied, “For loving me.”

Whether you like it or not, artificial intelligence (AI) is here to stay. It has already been used in many different fields. And now one of them is to help find missing children.
In Hubei Province, a group of 30 students at Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST) are working on a special project. They have developed an AI system and it can restore (修复) old photos. The clearer photos allow them to better look for missing people.
Sheng Jianzhong set up the project in 2020. At the time, he was a student at HUST. One day, he came across a missing child notice. The photos on the notice were difficult to make out. “These photos may be of no practical use even if the child is around,” he said. As a result, Sheng decided to use his skills to help missing children. And to his surprise, many of his schoolmates volunteered to join him.
Over the past few years, the team has tried to develop an AI system for restoring photos. The team has restored more than 1,000 photos. With the help of the AI system, 11 missing children were successfully found. For example, in December 2021, Sun Haiyang found his son after 14 years of searching thanks to the AI system.

Teenagers today do not get enough sleep because of heavy homework, using phones late at night, and early school start times. According to a new study, lack of sleep can cause many health problems, such as poor memory, weight gain, and even heart problems in the future.
The study was done by a health research center in the United States. It found that teenagers who sleep less than seven hours a night are more likely to feel sad and anxious. They also do worse in school than those who sleep at least eight hours. The study shows that sleep helps the brain remember what it learns during the day. Without enough sleep, students may forget things easily and find it hard to pay attention in class.
“Many teenagers stay up late watching videos or playing games on their phones,” the study said. “The blue light from screens makes it harder for them to fall asleep. Over time, this can lead to serious problems like high blood pressure and a weak immune system.”
According to the study, about 70% of teenagers in the survey do not get the recommended amount of sleep. Experts say that turning off screens one hour before bed and keeping a regular sleep schedule can help a lot. Parents and schools should also work together to reduce students’ stress and homework load.
70. Teenagers who sleep less than seven hours a night are more likely to ________.
A. have heart problems immediately B. feel sad and anxious
C. do better in school D. have a strong body
71. What does the study say about the blue light from screens?
A. It helps teenagers fall asleep fast. B. It is a cause of poor memory.
C. It makes falling asleep harder. D. It can help reduce stress.
72. What is the main purpose of the passage?
A. To tell teenagers to stop using phones forever.
B. To explain the causes and bad effects of teens’ sleep problems.
C. To suggest ways for parents and teachers to help teens sleep better
D. To encourage parents to buy more phones for kids.

Once upon a time, there was a small village by the river. To protect themselves from floods (洪水), the villagers built a long and strong dike (大坝).
One day, an old farmer noticed many ant (蚂蚁) holes on the dike. He was very worried, so he told the villagers, “These ant holes might be dangerous. We should fix them.” But the villagers laughed at him. “The dike is so strong. A few ant holes can’t do any harm,” they said.
One night, a heavy rainstorm hit. The river rose quickly. Water ran through the ant holes, making the dike weaker and weaker. Suddenly, a part of the dike collapsed (坍塌)! The flood rushed into the village and destroyed houses. The villagers were shocked and sad.

From that night on, our family tried harder to care about each other. Whenever someone is unhappy, we smile and say, “Write it on a note.”
59. What made Kevin sad according to the text?
A. He knew his brother’s secret. B. He didn’t find any food in the kitchen.
C. He had a fight with his brother. D. He hurt himself while going to the garden.
