China has long been known as a nation of manners (礼仪). Chinese people may be casual (随意的) when relaxing, but they always perform politely and have good manners on any formal occasion, whether it is a business meeting, a celebration party, or a banquet (宴席). The table manner is one of the most important Chinese manners.
One clear difference between Western and Eastern dining habits is about the size of meals. Meals in Western restaurants are normally divided for each person, but dishes offered in Chinese restaurants are usually shared together. As meals are shared, people may care about whether they are kept clean while eating. It’s common to find communal chopsticks (公筷) placed on the table. It is a good manner to use the communal chopsticks in a public setting.
You may also notice that tables in China, especially on formal occasions, are usually round and have a “lazy Susan” (more commonly known as “the rotating (旋转的) table on the top of your table”). The round table means reunion and shows that having dinner with families and friends together is an important event. Before you rotate “lazy Susan” to get to that delicious piece of duck, make sure that no one else is reaching for food. It’s impolite to rotate the table just as someone is trying to pick up some food.
In China, the custom of taking seats is connected with people’s position (地位). The host or the eldest family member traditionally takes the seat of honor (首位). For a round table indoors, the seat of honor is the one facing the door, symbolizing both respectability and authority (权威). The closer you are sitting next to that seat, the more important or respectable you are. What if in an outdoor dining? The seat of honor would be the one facing east, which might be different from indoor dinning in layout but has the similar meaning.
34. Which of the following pictures is NOT a formal occasion?
A. B. C. D.
35. According to the passage, what should we do when having meals in a public setting?
A. Use the communal chopsticks to get food. B. Use our own chopsticks to share food.
C. Get food for someone who can’t reach it. D. Wash our chopsticks after getting food.
36. What can we infer from the passage?
A. Meals in Western restaurants are usually divided for people.
B. It’s proper to rotate the table when others are picking up food.
C. We shouldn’t be noisy when having meals in public places.
D. East symbolizes an important position in Chinese culture.
37. How does the writer develop the article?
A. In the order of time. B. In the order of space.
C. From general to specific (具体). D. From specific to general.
C
I saw an old man lying on the floor. His hands and feet were tied up. There were two men standing beside him. One of them held a lantern, and the other held a gun.
The man on the floor kept begging, “Please! I won’t tell anyone!”
Each time he said that, the man with the lantern smiled evilly and said, “Indeed, you won’t have any chance to tell anyone!”
The man holding the gun was about to shoot, but the other man said, “Wait!” They talked in a low voice for a while, and then walked towards me.
I quickly ran away and hid behind some boxes. After that, the two men stood by the deck (甲板) railing and talked.
“Let’s just put the stolen things in our boat and leave,” the man with the lantern said. “Soon, this steamboat will be washed back into the river and sink (沉没). When that happens, old Jim Turner inside will surely die in the water.”
“But what if it doesn’t get washed back?” the other man asked.
“I think we can wait for a while and see.”
When they went back inside, I ran away. I was covered in a cold sweat (汗水).
“Jim, I’m determined (有决心的) to do something,” I said, “there’s a group of criminals over there. We need to find their boat and untie it. Then they’ll be caught here, and the sheriff (警长) can catch them. We have to be quick. You check one side, and I’ll check the other.”
“And then what, Huck?”
“What do you think? We’ll get back on the raft (木筏) and sail away from here.”
Jim gave a big sigh and said, “We can’t, Huck. The raft is gone. It came loose and sailed away by itself. We’re stuck here.”
The bad news let me feel disappointed (失望的), but soon, my eyes were full of hope.
(Adapted from Adventures of Huckleberry Finn)

①Have you ever seen photos of students holding their middle school English textbooks at famous landmarks around the world? Recently, a warm and creative trend (趋势) called the “Chinese Textbook Relay (接力)” has become popular online. It started with young Chinese people sharing photos of their textbooks at the exact places shown on the covers, and it has quickly spread across the globe.
②The trend first began in London. A Chinese overseas student took her English textbook, which had Big Ben on the cover, to the real landmark. She invited other Chinese visitors to take photos there, write their true feelings in the book, and pass it on. Soon, similar activities appeared at the Pyramids, the Sydney Opera House, and the Roman Colosseum. This simple idea quickly won the hearts of young people.
③Why has this trend become so popular? For Chinese teenagers, textbooks are often their first “window to the world”. Many grew up reading about these faraway places in books, but never thought they would see them in person. Standing at these landmarks with the textbook turns childhood dreams into reality. It is more than just a fun activity; it is a special coming-of-age journey.
④This relay also shows the quiet pride of today’s Chinese youth. They see the world with calmness and equality, and share their gentle warmth with people around them. For overseas students, the textbooks are not just study tools. They act as emotional ties, helping them feel less homesick and even connecting them with strangers in foreign countries. Besides, the activity reminds people of the true meaning of learning: connecting book knowledge with real-life experience.
⑤As more people join the relay, the books travel further and collect more stories. Each photo, each note, and each shared moment carries the sincerity of Chinese young people. This trend is not just about taking photos. It is a way to bring textbook knowledge to life, build cultural confidence, and spread warm, youthful energy across the world.
42. What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 1 refer to (指代)?
A. The “Chinese Textbook Relay” trend online.
B. A famous landmark shown on the textbook cover.
C. A middle school English textbook used by students.
D. A photo taken by Chinese overseas students in London.
43. According to the passage, what is the true meaning of the “textbook relay”?
A. It turns textbooks dreams into real-life experiences.
B. It helps students get better grades in English exams.
C. It encourages more people to travel abroad alone.
D. It helps overseas students make new friends easily.
44. What does Paragraph 4 mainly tell us?
A. The trend shows young people’s cultural confidence.
B. Chinese teenagers know the world through textbooks.
C. The activity has spread to many world-famous landmarks.
D. Learning English well is the true meaning of this activity.
45. What is the structure (结构) of this passage? (①=Paragraph 1…)
A. B. C. D.

Kurtz is the manager of Rust Belt Riders in Cleveland, Ohio. His company started a project of composting (制作堆肥) with waste food. Its goal is to fight against climate change by recycling food waste.
“If we want to meet the climate goals that have been set by our leaders and scientists, we’re going to have to deal with food waste, which is a huge part of the problem of climate change,” Kurtz said.
Wasted food usually ends up in landfills. As it breaks down, it creates a gas called methane (甲烷). Methane traps heat in the atmosphere, which makes climate worse.
Every day, Kurtz connects with grocery stores, restaurants, and other food-service businesses. He educates them about the harmful effects of food waste. Then he asks if they’re willing to change the way they deal with their extra food. So far, Rust Belt Riders has called on 300 companies and 2,800 families to do something different with their food waste. With seven trucks and 30 workers, the company picks up their clients’ extra food, composts it and turns it into soil.
Composted soil is much more than just dirt. It consists of (由……组成) five ingredients that help plants grow. That’s why Kurtz and his workmates sell the composted soil to people and businesses that need it, which has become a second service at Rust Belt Riders.
In addition to partnering with businesses and families, Rust Belt Riders has teamed up with local schools. At Dentzler Elementary, Rust Belt Riders helps the kitchen staff compost its leftover food. The students place their food waste into bins during lunch periods. The bins are then collected by Rust Belt Riders. “This program has created a space for all students to become environmental caretakers in their own cafeteria,” Emily Cass, a farm-to-school coordinator (协调员) at Dentzler says, “when they might not have other opportunity to help with climate change.”

“But what if it doesn’t get washed back?” the other man asked.
“I think we can wait for a while and see.”

To start with, practice good manners in public places. Follow traffic rules and never run a red light. Protect trees, flowers and public facilities. These small actions show respect for our city and its people.
Besides, learn about charities like UNICEF. Understanding others’ needs helps us value the importance of helping. Even a small act of kindness can make a real difference.
What’s more, help those in need around us. Help the elderly cross the road or join community volunteer activities. A simple act of kindness brings warmth and hope.
This summer, I will stick to good manners all the time, like following traffic rules outdoors. I also plan to volunteer in the community and help neighbours carry heavy things.
