Katie wanted to go, too. “But we’re riding our bikes,” said Tom, the oldest brother. “You’re too slow with your training wheels,” added Mike. Their dad asked the boys to take Katie. “But you have to ride fast,” David said. The four children got on their bikes. The boys rode very fast. Katie tried her best, but she soon fell behind. She called them, but they didn’t hear. Katie didn’t give up. She rode hard and finally got to the pool. Her brothers felt sorry for leaving her. They played together in the shallow end and wanted to make sure she had fun. But soon the boys noticed that their friends were all in line at the diving board. One by one, the brothers joined the big kids taking turns jumping off the springboard into the deep end of the pool. Everyone was laughing and having fun. Katie was not having fun. She wanted to dive, too! She wanted to show her brothers she was big enough to play with them. She stood in line, but she soon felt nervous. She had never jumped into the deep end before. When it was her turn, she started to cry. Then she felt an arm around her shoulders. “It’s okay, Katie,” said Tom. “I was scared to jump when I was your age, too. C Thanks to people’s rising interest in plant-based eating, the little-known portfolio diet has gradually come to public attention these days. “It got its name because it’s kind of like a business portfolio — you can pick and choose the parts you like,” explains Glenn, a registered dietitian and an assistant professor of nutrition at New York University. Developed in the early 2000s by David Jenkins, a professor of nutritional sciences and his workmates, the portfolio diet mainly includes nuts and seeds, plant proteins, fruits and vegetables, and heart-healthy oils. It is basically a list of foods that studies have shown to lower cholesterol (胆固醇).The purpose of developing such a diet is to see if these foods work better to reduce cholesterol when eaten together. Studies have clearly shown the effects of keeping a portfolio diet. Eating more vegetables, beans and plant-based foods in general can greatly reduce heart disease risk, according to a 30-year study of over 200,000 adults. In 2003, research found that people with high cholesterol lowered their LDL (bad cholesterol) by 35% after four weeks on the diet — almost as effective as medicine. A 2025 study reported that people who followed the diet well were 16% less likely to die from heart disease. A 2018 study also showed it reduced cholesterol, blood pressure, and the 10-year risk of heart disease. While the diet specifies daily targets (目标) for how much of each to have, like 50 grams of plant proteins and 45 grams of nuts and seeds, no foods are taboo on it. “It doesn’t really mean to stop eating some foods — it just says include certain foods every day, which helps to take the place of other foods,” says Keith Ayoob, a dietitian in New York City and a professor at a college of medicine. Indeed, the focus is more on what to add to your meals than what to avoid eating. Many experts suggested starting with small changes and building from there. “Think about what you’re eating now and what you can change,” advises Glenn. For example, you could use heart-healthy oils instead of butter in your cooking. “The part that may be the most challenging for people is the suggested 50 grams of plant protein, including soy protein, daily,” says Ayoob. “That’s a lot, even for people who like soy. One way to get to explore the soy-protein world if you aren’t a tofu person is to try soy nuts — they’re crunchy like nuts but without the beany taste of many soy foods.” 40. What can we learn about portfolio diet according to the passage? A. It is mainly developed for people to lose weight. B. One of its main benefits lies in lowering the risk of LDL. C. It suggests people try to choose as many kinds of foods as possible. 41. What does the word “taboo” in paragraph 4 probably mean? A. something that is not allowed B. something that helps to treat illness C. something that makes people gain weight 42. What does the writer probably agree? A. The portfolio diet can help to solve most of the health problems. B. People should carefully choose what to eat and what to keep away from. C. It is unnecessary to change one’s present diet to meet the portfolio at one go. 43. Which of the following can be the best title for the passage? A. Eat better, change faster B. The more plants, the healthier C. Little known, but well worthy 六、阅读短文,根据短文内容回答问题。(共8分,每小题2分) Do you like to drink orange juice for breakfast? If you do, you are like many other kids. People may meditate (冥想) for 30 minutes every morning or keep a 12-week daily thankfulness journaling exercise. But let’s be honest. Most people feel too busy to add more challenging activities to their day. What if happiness could come from simple, brief actions such as texting a sincere “thank you” to a classmate or looking at the sky’s vastness with wonder? Researchers set out to explore this question. Their work grew out of the 2021 film Mission: Joy. They created a free online resource called the Big Joy Project. People who signed up received a daily email with a link to a five to ten-minute micro act. The opening micro act invited participants (参与者) to listen to a 42-second audio clip of different people laughing. Other acts included making a thankfulness list, doing something kind, and watching an inspiring video. Most people reported that they found the micro acts easy and rewarding to do. Since its launch, more than 100,000 individuals across over 200 countries have joined and done more than 400,000 micro acts, making it the largest-ever community science project on joy. By analyzing responses from 17,598 people, researchers found that participants reported higher emotional well-being, more positive emotions, lower stress, and even modest improvements in sleep quality. The more micro acts people completed, the more their happiness improved. Importantly, people who reported higher levels of social disadvantage, such as financial strain (焦虑) or lower education, often showed greater boosts to well-being. The project also increased people’s prosociality — that is, their natural urge to help others. They felt more willing to offer support after completing the project. The biggest increases were observed among men, whose prosociality scores were lower before the start, and among people with lower socioeconomic status (社会经济地位). Why do such small actions work? Researchers think they activate the same psychological ingredients as longer programs: they boost positive emotions, inspire feelings of connection, and help people feel more matched with meaning and purpose. Micro acts also give people a stronger sense of agency — the feeling that they can control their own happiness rather than waiting for good things to happen. In a busy world, small daily acts of joy can be powerful. They do not require much time or money, but they can improve happiness and kindness. Sometimes, the smallest steps make the biggest difference. 56. What were participants asked to do on the first day of the Big Joy Project? A. To meditate for 30 minutes in the morning. B. To write down things they were thankful for. C. To listen to a 42-second audio of people laughing. 57. The word “prosociality” in paragraph 4 probably means _______. A. the inner wish to offer help and care to others B. the habit of doing small acts for one’s own happiness C. the feeling of joy when receiving help from others 58. What can we learn from the passage? A. Men showed greater increases in emotional well-being than women. B. The research for the Big Joy Project was inspired by a film related to joy. C. Participants with financial strain showed smaller improvements in sleep quality. 59. What is the main purpose of the text? A. To introduce a scientific project that shows small actions can boost happiness. B. To compare the Big Joy Project with traditional happiness programs in detail. C. To explain why traditional happiness programs are not suitable for busy people. (二)根据短文内容回答问题。(共4分) 60. Would you like to join the Big Joy Project? Why or why not? (Please give two reasons.) ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
